Chapter 32: Trouble Brewing (Part 2)

Lucas sighed. "What do you want?"

Leo huffed. "The math teacher’s calling for us. Said it was urgent."

Lucas frowned. "Why?"

Leo shrugged. "Hell if I know. But he’s got that ’I’m-about-to-lecture-you-for-an-hour’ face, so you better hurry."

Lucas rolled his eyes before fully unzipping the tent and stepping out. The morning sun was already peeking through the trees, casting a warm glow over the camp.

Some students were stirring, but most were still inside their tents, reluctant to start the day.

He turned back slightly, lowering his voice. "I’ll be back."

Mia gave him a small nod, still tucked into the corner.

Satisfied, Lucas walked away with Leo, leaving the tent behind.

Mia waited.

She counted the seconds, listening closely for any sounds outside.

Only when she was sure the coast was clear did she let out a deep breath and slowly sit up.

Her body was stiff from staying still for too long, but she ignored the discomfort. The only thing on her mind was getting out of here without anyone noticing.

Lucas had covered for her well enough, but if anyone saw her leaving his tent, there would be rumors.

She didn’t need that kind of attention — not when things were already tense after what she had witnessed two nights before.

Quietly, she gathered her things, smoothing out her clothes as best as she could.

’Okay... just walk out naturally. No one will notice.’

Taking another deep breath, she unzipped the tent, stepping outside with slow, careful movements.

The camp was waking up. Some students were stretching, others were already at the makeshift kitchen area where breakfast was being prepared.

Thankfully, no one was paying attention to her.

She casually made her way toward the girls’ tents, forcing herself to walk at a normal pace. The urge to run and hide was strong, but that would only attract suspicion.

Just a few more steps —

"Mia!"

She nearly jumped.

Turning sharply, she saw one of her friends, Lila, waving at her from near the water. "Where were you? You didn’t come back last night!"

Mia’s heart skipped a beat.

Lila didn’t sound accusing, just concerned. Even so, she scrambled for an excuse. "Oh, um... I had trouble sleeping, so I walked around for a bit."

Lila tilted her head. "In the middle of the night?"

Mia forced a sheepish laugh. "Yeah, I know, bad idea. I ended up sleeping in one of the empty tents closer to the boys’ side so I wouldn’t wake anyone up."

Lila still looked skeptical, but she let it go. "Well, hurry up! Breakfast is almost ready."

Mia nodded quickly. "I’ll be there soon."

Lila turned back toward the others, and Mia let out a quiet sigh of relief. That was close.

Without wasting another second, she slipped into her tent, collapsing onto her sleeping bag.

That had been way too stressful for this early in the morning.

"So, what do you think it’s about?" Lucas asked as he and Leo walked toward the teacher’s tent.

Leo stretched his arms above his head, yawning. "No clue, man. Maybe they finally realized this camping trip sucks and wanna send us home early."

Lucas snorted. "Yeah, not happening."

As they neared the teacher’s section, they saw a small group of students already gathered outside. Some were whispering among themselves, others just looked annoyed at being woken up so early.

The math teacher stood in the center, his usual stern expression in place. He was a large man with a broad frame and thick glasses that made his already intense gaze even sharper.

When he spotted Lucas and Leo, he nodded. "Good, you’re here. Now we can begin."

Lucas exchanged a glance with Leo before stepping forward.

The math teacher’s gaze narrowed as Lucas and Leo joined the group of half-awake students standing outside the tents.

His arms were crossed, his glasses catching the early morning sunlight as he studied each of them with his usual unreadable expression.

Behind him, the PE teacher stood with his arms over his chest, looking equally displeased.

Lucas could tell right away — this wasn’t going to be a normal morning lecture.

The other boys must have sensed it too, because the usual groggy muttering died down. Everyone straightened slightly, waiting for whatever was coming next.

After a long silence, the math teacher finally spoke.

"Two nights ago," he began, his voice carrying across the clearing, "someone or something, an animal perhaps or it could be a human thought it would be a good idea to destroy the rafts."

A heavy silence fell over the group.

Lucas felt his stomach tighten. He glanced at Leo, who raised an eyebrow in confusion. The others looked equally surprised, exchanging murmurs of shock.

"We know about this," someone whispered.

The math teacher continued, his tone sharp. "As you all know, these rafts were crucial to our fishing trips. Without them, our food supply will dwindle. The reservoir won’t last forever, and we cannot afford to sit around waiting for rescue."

A few boys shifted uncomfortably.

"So," the PE teacher finally spoke, stepping forward, "since those rafts are gone, you boys are going to build new ones."

Lucas frowned. He had a bad feeling about where this was going.

The PE teacher smirked. "And to do that, we need wood. Which means — "

"We’re going into the forest," the math teacher finished grimly.

A few boys stiffened. Others gulped audibly.

"Wait," one of them — Oliver, a short kid with glasses — spoke up. "You mean... we’re actually going to cut down a tree?"

"That’s right," the PE teacher confirmed. "Each and every one of you will be helping. You’re not just students now — you’re survivors. And it’s time to start acting like it."

Lucas clenched his jaw.

A trip into the forest? That wasn’t just exhausting — it was dangerous.

The trees grew thick, and the undergrowth made it hard to see what lurked beyond.

And there were stories — Stories that circulated around the students. Stories of scary monsters roaming the forest, that they would kill anyone that went too deep.

Of course, those were just rumors... right?

Lucas’ hands balled into fists. Either way, they had no choice.

Leo leaned toward him, whispering, "Dude, this is insane. We’ve never even held an axe before. What if someone chops their own foot off?"
