Chapter 85: Monopoly is Good

Chapter 85 – Monopoly is Good

Rava finished her Danish bite, licked a smear of raspberry from his thumb with a languid swipe of tongue.

Lux’s breath hitched.

She swallowed, then fixed him with a half-lidded stare. "So, what’s on today’s grand agenda? More bed Olympics? Or is Hell scheduling you for a mid-morning hostile takeover?"

"I vetoed work," he said, slipping an arm under her shoulders and easing her upright so she could sip coffee without drenching the sheet. The mug’s rich aroma bloomed between them. "We’re off the clock, madam. The only takeover I’m interested in is your attention span."

Rava snorted into her drink. "You already monopolized that. Last night. Repeatedly."

"Mmm. Monopoly is good. But maybe we diversify." He brushed stray hair behind her ear, fingertips lingering to trace the sensitive ridge of cartilage until she shivered. "A walk by the harbor. A drive when my motorcycle finally arrives. Maybe an illicit ice-cream tasting in broad daylight."

"I approve." She took another swallow of coffee, sighing happily. "Though you might need to carry me. My legs are... negotiating terms."

Lux barked a laugh. "I accept those terms." He slid off the bed, nabbed a fluffy hotel robe, and draped it over her shoulders like crowning royalty. "Interim treaty: breakfast in bed, then a shower summit. After that, world domination in leisurely increments."

"Leisurely," she echoed, tasting the word like new cuisine. "I could get used to that."

He retrieved a small silver jar of imported honey, popped its lid, and offered her the tiny spoon. She took a dollop, licked it slow, sugar glistening on her lips.

Lux tracked the motion, tongue pressing to his own teeth.

The room smelled of coffee steam, buttery dough, faint lavender, and the warm saline musk of her skin. Traffic outside rose and fell like waves. A gull screeched somewhere high, answered by another. Time felt syrup-thick, sweet, and strangely precious.

Rava handed him the spoon back. "Your turn."

He dipped, tasted. The honey was floral, citrus-bright—nothing compared to the electric spark singing down his spine as her tentacle curled around his calf in lazy possession.

"Verdict?" she asked.

"Honey’s nice," he said, gaze locked on hers, "but I’ve developed an exclusive palate."

She arched a brow. "Exclusive, huh?"

"Very exclusive." He leaned in again, breathing the line against her lips. "Only accepts offerings from tentacled sea goddesses on vacation."

"Lucky for you," she whispered, "I know one. But not on vacation."

He kissed her then—slow but deep, letting the honey melt between them. The System pinged again—something about hormonal metrics—but Lux ignored it, too busy memorizing the soft catch of her breath, the warmth blooming through his ribs, the sudden certainty that maybe this was what joy actually tasted like.

And for the first time in countless fiscal quarters, Lux Vaelthorn didn’t calculate the cost.

Rava’s fingers slid into his hair, tugging lightly at the roots. Not demanding—just grounding. As if to confirm...

’Yes, this is real. Yes, you’re allowed to want this.’

Lux responded without thinking, deepening the kiss, letting the slow drag of his mouth trace along her bottom lip like a signature on a treaty that only they understood.

Her breath hitched as his hand slid beneath the robe he’d just draped over her—fingers brushing the soft slope of her thigh. Her skin was still warm, flushed from sleep and sunshine and possibly the memory of whatever Round Ten had done to her motor functions. She leaned into him with that dangerous mix of surrender and challenge that made him ache.

Lux pulled back just enough to speak, voice low, silken, and rich with barely contained temptation. "You said your legs were negotiating terms," he murmured, thumb tracing idle circles along her hipbone. "How’s the treaty holding up?"

"They’re... shaky," Rava whispered, her words catching like they were half-lost in a moan. "They might need reinforcement."

Lux grinned, slow and sharp, like a wolf in silk. "Well, lucky for you..." He nipped her jawline lightly, then kissed the spot to soothe the sting. "I’m very good at structural support."

Lux didn’t even blink at the notifications. He was focused now, like a hunter with one target—and Rava was already melting beneath his touch, the robe slipping lower as his mouth found the hollow of her collarbone.

"You know," he murmured between kisses, "I need something that bring me joy today."

Her laugh was breathy, caught between a sigh and a gasp as his hands roamed lower. "And you think joy is—mmh—me?"

He leaned in, lips brushing her ear. "No, I know joy is you."

"Oh gods," she muttered, her arms sliding around his back. Her tentacles twitched, a few curling like they were reacting to a static charge, reaching for him. "I haven’t even finished breakfast."

"Then let me serve something else," he whispered, dragging the sheet aside. Her skin glowed in the soft light, kissed with red where he’d marked her the night before. His fingertips traced those marks now, like memory etched in skin.

She tilted her head back as he shifted, gently laying her flat again. The silver breakfast domes clinked quietly behind them, forgotten.

"Lux..." she murmured, half-warning, half-plea.

"Shh." He trailed his lips down, slow. Worshipful. "Let me feed you properly."

Her legs shifted on instinct, parting beneath him as his body slid between hers with practiced, reverent ease. The robe slid open completely. She arched into him, and he groaned, letting his head drop to her shoulder for a moment, breathing her in like the only thing that made sense.

Outside, the city carried on in chaos and capitalism.

Inside, time bent.

Sheets twisted. Pillows hit the floor. The croissants died heroes.

They moved together again—not with urgency, but with that intoxicating, slow rhythm of knowing each other’s edges too well now to rush. Her hands gripped his back. His teeth grazed her neck. She gasped his name when he—

The rest wasn’t so much heard as felt.

Again.

And again.
