Chapter 34 - 34 34 Li Jia's Worries
34: Chapter 34 Li Jia’s Worries 34: Chapter 34 Li Jia’s Worries Beneath the somewhat decrepit eaves, Fu Xuebing stared with his not-so-large eyes, his demeanor fierce as he slapped his hand and said, “Fanzi, we’ve been neighbors for so many years, I would never swindle anyone, let alone you, am I right?
Just put your mind at ease, it’s only a small sum of money.
You keep muttering about it, which hurts our friendship, brother.”
Yang Fan forced a smile, knowing that when jokes are taken seriously, the fun disappears completely.
But usually, out of ten people who say things like that, nine are likely to double-cross you.
“Are you really going to sell?” Yang Fan asked.
Fu Xuebing nodded, “Sell, sell, sell.
I’m not going to hoard this inventory anymore.
I’ve got my eye on a big job these few days, need some cash to grease the wheels.
If I pull this off, brother, I’ll treat you to good food and drinks!”
“Okay then, I’ll be waiting,” Yang Fan said with a smile, but he really didn’t know what kind of big project Fu Xuebing could manage with just a few hundred yuan.
Li Jia speculated that Fu Xuebing might be involved with gambling or women, and now Yang Fan felt this was almost certainly the case.
“Don’t worry, brother.
I’ve got everything under control, the plan is rock solid!” Fu Xuebing declared loudly, his hand waving with a cigarette between the fingers as if he were commanding an army.
Despite being seated, his spray almost reached Yang Fan’s face.
At that moment, Li Jia, having just washed her face, walked out of the room.
Her expression had mostly returned to normal, but upon closer inspection, one could still discern a hint of guilt and nervousness in her eyes.
Fu Xuebing gave her only a brief glance before loudly demanding, “Hurry up and get these medicinal materials sorted out for Fanzi, weigh them out.
I’m in a rush here.”
Li Jia glared at him fiercely but didn’t say anything, heading straight into the eastern room.
Their family was small but the house was large, with two rooms in the east side used to store grain and miscellaneous items.
Li Jia was already busy working inside, but he was still nonchalantly sitting and smoking, showing no intention of helping.
Watching this, Yang Fan couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you going to lend a hand?”
“What’s there to help with such a small task?
Fanzi, I feel obliged to remind you, when you get married, you must remember, never let a woman have idle time or spoil her.
Otherwise, she’ll end up riding roughshod over you,” Fu Xuebing said with the air of a seasoned veteran, winking and pulling faces.
Yang Fan suddenly felt frustrated.
He wondered how on earth this guy had managed to find such a virtuous woman like Li Jia.
Did he step in a pile of dog poop that fell from the sky when courting?
“You also have the nerve to let sister-in-law work alone?
I wouldn’t dare take your life advice; I’m a bachelor now, but if I learned from you, I’d definitely end up divorced,” Yang Fan said exasperatedly, “You just happened to end up with a compliant woman like sister-in-law.
Try it with Lao Er’s wife if you dare, she’d knock the shit out of you.”
Fu Xuebing chuckled lewdly, “There’s nothing I can do about it.
I’m just lucky.
Zhao Laoer may look rich, but his lot isn’t as good as mine.
His wife bosses him around so much, he can’t stay home for three days without running off, poor sod!”
Yang shook his head and walked into the eastern room to help Li Jia with the work.
Fu Xuebing was content to watch from the sidelines, but Yang couldn’t stand it.
Seeing Yang come inside, Li Jia glanced at him with reddened eyes, then quickly lowered her head and went back to sorting the medicinal materials.
Yang felt a strange discomfort in his heart from her look.
Even though he didn’t know the specific circumstances, nor why Li Jia would rather live like this than consider divorce,
From what he saw, it seemed that pity was the only appropriate description.
Yang helped Li Jia to sort out the relatively sparse amount of astragalus root and codonopsis in the room.
It was only after they finished that Fu Xuebing finally got up and weighed everything.
All in all, they barely managed to scrape together two hundred pounds.
Just as Yang Fan settled the bill, Fu Xuebing tossed out a “Busy here, help yourself,” and turned around, bustling off as quickly as he had come.
“Sister-in-law, with things like this, haven’t you thought of stepping in?” Yang Fan asked with a somewhat bewildered expression.
Li Jia shook her head, “I don’t want to talk about it anymore.
As long as he’s not borrowing money from outsiders and making them come to me for repayment, I don’t want to say a word about anything else.
Even if I spoke up, I couldn’t win the argument.
Nothing would change, and I’d still have to face their family of three’s abuse and threats.
It’s not worth it.”
“But you this…” Yang Fan almost blurted out the words “get a divorce” before catching himself in time.
Li Jia let out a faintly sad chuckle, and said with heartfelt sincerity, “Fanzi, at my age, I can’t find a decent match anymore.
Although life is frustrating now, I can manage if I don’t overthink it.
At least the kids are well taken care of, and in the future, I can do something on my own without relying on him.”
For a moment, Yang Fan truly didn’t know what to say.
How to put it…
it certainly wasn’t a good idea.
“Let’s go inside,” Li Jia said softly, tugging at Yang Fan’s sleeve.
The implication was clear.
The man who aspired to do great things was gone, and they could continue what they hadn’t finished just before.
Yang Fan nodded and then said, “Sister-in-law, if you’re feeling uncomfortable, maybe we could do this another day?”
A wealth of sorrow was hidden in Li Jia’s eyes, which had turned visibly red.
He didn’t want to take advantage of her vulnerability, to stir these gentle waters with a stranger’s stick at such a time.
Even though the very thought excited him, Yang Fan knew that if she wasn’t in the mood, there would be little interest in doing that, and it would just feel like completing a task.
Li Jia shook her head with a soft laugh, “I’m fine, we’ve already agreed on this, so come on.”
Seeing this, Yang Fan could only nod in agreement.
The two went back into the room, where Li Jia had Yang Fan sit on the bed, then squeezed her supple body between his legs with a blush as she gently unbuttoned her neckline.
Her dress had a vintage style, not only with sleeves but also three buttons at the collar.
Just as those two perky, adorable, and anxious mounds were about to burst forth, a thunderous shout from Fu Xuebing came from outside, “Fanzi, are you heading to the town later?”
The two in the room disentangled themselves in an instant.
Yang Fan gave Li Jia a look, casually picked up his almost-empty tea cup from the table, and, pretending to take a drink, stepped out the door with a nonchalant air and leaned on the doorway, asking, “You’re going to town?”
“Ah, just hitching a ride with you,” Fu Xuebing said while walking over.
“Well…
let’s go then.
But wait a bit, I’ll take those herbs of yours home later,” Yang Fan said.
After being interrupted by Fu Xuebing several times, he didn’t feel too confident about continuing with Li Jia.
These couple of times had been close calls; they hadn’t fully undressed.
If they had, they surely wouldn’t have been able to get dressed in time.
“It’s just a short walk, let Li Jia bring them over later, let’s get going,” Fu Xuebing urged, “I’m not going to steal what you sold.”
