Chapter 14: Dogs of the State
"Let’s go" Marie pulled at Trent
One of the agents walked to them as the others took Yolaf’s body away
"Here" he tossed a car key and points to one, "We’re sorry for the misunderstanding"
Misunderstanding? Trent wanted to shout at him but Marie pinched him to hold back.
"Yeah—" she replied, "It was a misunderstanding"
They entered the car and sped off not turning back to look.
"Fuck..." Trent muttered.
What the hell just happened?
"We’ve been exposed to the NIA— if they didn’t already know"
Marie glanced at him. How did the agents find them so fast? Something seemed off.
Why did Newton call it off and just what piece of Information did Yolaf kill himself to protect?
"We need new phones— everything restored"
Trent leaned back on the seat. Everything was getting too complicated
Marie parked the car just outside the city.
"We have to leave the car here— I think we’re being tracked" she whispered.
They came down and looked around. Some cars parked in a quiet corner with no CCTV in view. Perfect.
They walked to one of them and Trent stood watch as Marie broke into the car.
"Let’s go"
They headed straight to base.
_________
"Hey!!!" Trent shouted calling out to Anton who was in a conversation.
Marie quickened her steps behind him as he rushed to Anton.
Anton turned to them. "You’ll burst my eardrums. And that’s rude"
"Yeah?" Trent grabbed his collar, "Rude? What the hell was that, huh?"
"Calm down" Marie tried to break his grasp on Anton who just stared at Trent.
"That wasn’t my call— I couldn’t do anything. I’m sorry, kid" Anton explained
Trent loosened his grip, exhaling hard.
"Why the hell does the NIA want Yolaf so much?"
"That’s confidential" a voice cut through across the room— Newton
"Confidential?" Marie and Trent turned to him
"Our identity was supposed to be a secret and now we’ve been fucking exposed" She snapped at him.
"I don’t even know much" Anton said, arranging his shirt.
Trent glanced at Anton— jaws tightening and anger filling his eyes as he looked at Newton.
He’d never seen Anton angry like this. Ever.
"Forget it— what’s done is done" Newton turned away from them heading for the briefing room
Trent looked at him... It’s clear Newton was hiding something.
He was going to handover the note Yolaf gave, but he changed his mind.
Newton dipped his hand into his pocket and stretched their phones.
"The truck driver was stopped inside the City"
Yeah. That’s why he dropped the phones inside the truck— to make them think they were heading back.
Anton shut the door of the briefing room as he walked in behind them.
"I apologize about the problems you faced" Newton said, taking his seat.
"About your Car— we’ve prepared something for you" he threw the key to Trent.
"That’s it?" Trent turned to Anton
"That’s what an agent of the state gets?"
"More like a dog of the state" Marie muttered. "We only get the protection"
She leaned against the chair raising it upward as it leaned on the table behind.
A dog, huh? Trent looked at Anton. He remembered what Anton had told him the day he got called back—
Don’t trust that old Man, Twerp.
He could see the anger in Anton’s eyes. What was really going on?
"A call came in from higher up— they decided to hand Yolaf over to the NIA" Newton continued.
"Why? I thought we wanted to get the information before they did" Trent asked, arms leaning on the table
"There was no information we couldn’t do without" Newton cleared his throat.
"The NIA agreed to share whatever new information they got from Yolaf"
Trent’s gaze met Marie’s. They knew they wanted to ask more questions, but they held back.
"You should be preparing for the basketball tournament— I think Kraven is pushing to host it there"
Newton stood up and walked away.
Anton walked to Trent and pulled something from his pocket signaling him to be quiet— a note.
What is it with People handing him notes?
Marie stretched to look at the note as Anton walked off.
’Have your thing’s checked’
"The car should be outside" Anton smiled to them as he closed the door.
Trent exhaled, turning to Marie
"Let’s go. I’ve got to meet Mikhail now that I’m in town"
"For the house? Should I come along?"
"Yeah, you can. The husband and wife have to be there, no?" Trent chuckled as he squeezed the note into his pocket
Marie laughed, following behind him as they left the room.
"Damn" Marie gasped looking at the car as they walked out of the base
"Just like my baby..." She stretched for the key and walked to the driver’s side.
"You can have it"
"Really?" She gasped.
"Yeah" Trent replied with a smirk as he opened the door and slid into the passenger’s seat.
"Thank you, Husband" Marie curtsied playfully.
___________
"Mikhail" Trent spoke into the phone as it connected.
"Yo, Trent"
There was noise in the background on Mikhail’s end
"Are you busy? I was going to ask about the house" Trent asked
"We’re just running some tests on the cars. My Friend is here too"
"Perfect. I’ll be there soon" Trent cut the call, glancing at Marie
She seemed happy driving the car. She glanced at him
"Athen’s Autos, right?"
"How—"
"I was looking to get a new baby from them since yours seemed great" she chuckled.
Her fingers tapped on the wheel as she hummed to the song playing.
"Ah... I need to make one more call"
Trent scrolled through his phone and called Theo.
"Hello, Captain... I thought I’d been forgotten"
"Sorry, Man. I’ve been kind of busy" Trent explained.
"Well, I understand. You’ve gotta treat the wife well" Theo laughed. "What’s up?"
"Can you meet me at Mikhail’s? It’s important"
Theo sighed and said something to someone.
"I hope I’m not disturbing you" Trent added.
"No... I’m at my Sister’s. I’ll be there in 20 minutes"
___________
Marie parked the car at the front of the place as they got there. Angela walked towards them seeing the Car.
"May I help you?"
"It’s me. How’s everything been going?" Trent answered her as he opened the door.
She immediately looked at the backseat of the car
"He’s not here yet" Trent chuckled
Her face turned red with a smile as she realized.
Immediately, Trent threw his phone to Marie and crossed his finger on his lip for her to be quiet.
He pulled Angela to a corner, far from the car, startling her.
"Sorry..." He apologized as he freed her.
"What’s happening?" She asked, alert.
"I want you to keep what I’m about to say a secret. Got it?" He gazed into her eyes serious
She looked at him, confused but curious about what was going on and nodded.
"The car and phones — I think they’re bugged. Can you tweak, not kill, it?"
She thought for a while, "I’ll see what I can do"
Trent grabbed her hands with a smile, "Thank you very much"
"Sorry..." He added, seeing her reaction.
They walked back to Marie and Trent signalled her to quietly give Angela the phones and the key.
As they were about to step in, Theo rode into the premises with his bike.
"What’s up, Cap"
He exchanged greetings with Marie and Angela and they walked in.
Mikhail walked towards them with a lady by his side as they entered.
"It’s good to see you again, Trent" he stretched his arms wide as he walked towards them
He bowed stretching an arm to Marie, "Madam... We’ve not properly met yet"
"I’m Mikhail Reynolds"
"Marie Ackerman" the words came out smoothly from her mouth. Trent chuckled.
"It’s nice to meet you. I see you’ve already met my Cousin—Angela"
"Hey. I’m here too, Bastard" Theo snapped at him playfully.
"Welcome, Lord Assoff" Mikhail bowed mockingly.
"Ah. This is my friend, the realtor— Kimberly Owens" he introduced the lady, bringing her forward.
They exchanged greetings and headed towards Mikhail’s office to discuss. Trent looked at the cars been worked on as he passed them.
Angela slipped into the back with the phones as they headed into the office.
Kimberly brought a file out and showed them pictures of the place and it’s surrounding.
"The owner didn’t want to sell the land with the trees but I gave them your offer and they bit"
"How much?" Trent asked taking a picture from Theo who was amazed by them
"They won’t go lesser than 1.7. I tried my best"
"1.7 mil?" Theo gasped staring at Trent, eyes widened
"What do you think?" Trent turned to Marie.
"It’s beautiful. Well worth the price" she said, looking at one of the pictures.
"Send me your details later... I trust that there won’t be any problems"
Kimberly nodded and turned to Mikhail who wore a wide smile like a proud dad.
"I like the Maserati and Porche outside. How much?"
Marie turned to him. Two cars?
She’d seen the Porche and took an interest in it but she already got one.
"I’ll give you for a million" Mikhail responded standing up "they’re better than what you got previously"
"I’ll do the transfer later— send the accounts for the house and the cars"
Theo watched with excitement, still looking at the house pictures.
"I need you to check a place for me— a storage unit" Trent pulled Theo closer as they walked out of the office.
"Which place?" Theo whispered
"2nd Street. There’s a storage there. Unit 46—Bring me what you find"
Theo stared at him for a while.
"Alright" he walked towards his bike seeing the seriousness on Trent’s face.
Unit 46. 2nd Street, Udor’s place, Charis City.
That was what Yolaf wrote on the note.
How did he get to the city and what was he hiding?
