Gospel of Blood -
Chapter 634 : ----------------
“Oceanus, long time no see.”
Looking at the massive beast whose eyes had regained clarity, Charlotte spoke with a mixture of nostalgia and complexity.
Oceanus gazed at her with a sense of melancholy. The eyes of this God of the Ocean seemed distant, as though they were looking at her but also at something beyond her.
Shock, complexity, confusion, realization, joy, and melancholy—all sorts of emotions surfaced one after another in those enormous pupils.
With a soft sigh, in a hoarse and frail voice, Oceanus murmured.
“It has been a long time… Your appearance… has changed quite a bit. It seems you’ve finally walked this path…”
Oceanus’ demeanor and tone were far more weathered than in Charlotte’s memories.
Two thousand years was an incredibly long time. For Charlotte, who had traversed through history, it was merely a span of a few months, but for this ancient God, it was an unfathomably distant age.
Even though the immortality of the Gods granted eternal life, the erosion of time still left its marks on the soul.
Charlotte could sense the profound exhaustion and a faint unfamiliarity in Oceanus’ words. For mortals, a ten-year separation could alienate old friends, let alone two thousand years.Even considering Charlotte’s potential future time travels, the “True Ancestor” had already vanished for a millennium. A thousand years was enough to obliterate many things.
Yet, deep within Oceanus’ eyes, Charlotte still saw that familiar rugged gentleness and trust.
Clearly, this God of the Ocean had not forgotten her—neither in memory nor in feeling.
Though the long years could erode much, the friendship between Gods endured.
It was like a fine wine that grew more fragrant with time.
Charlotte had many questions she wanted to ask.
What exactly happened all these years?
How did things come to this?
What was Artemis planning to seal in the Western Continent?
But in the end, the only words that left her lips were…
“How are you feeling now?”
“Not bad. Thanks to your origin power, at least I won’t die right away. Being able to chat with an old friend like this is already quite a blessing.”
Oceanus laughed gruffly.
He seemed remarkably familiar with the power Charlotte now wielded, showing no aversion to the white halo of origin power on her fingertips—unlike the reaction of fear she remembered him having whenever the topics of creation and origin were mentioned.
Yet Charlotte could still detect the suppressed tremor in his voice.
It was not fear but pain—perhaps the forceful endurance of some profound suffering.
Beneath his enormous form, contrary to the surface appearance of purification, two origin powers continued to clash, like a brutal battlefield.
On one side was the corrupting origin power of the abyss that had tainted Oceanus.
On the other was Charlotte’s own origin power, purified by merging the blood divine power and the holy power through the Gospel of Blood.
“The corruption within you hasn’t been eradicated yet. Relax your mind—I’ll increase the input of divine power,” Charlotte said.
As she finished speaking, she channeled more origin power, intensifying the flow.
But the next moment, a tentacle from Oceanus blocked her.
“Oceanus?” Charlotte frowned slightly, a sense of unease rising within her.
Oceanus smiled faintly and said,
“Lilith… no, I should say… Charlotte.”
“The origin power is too precious. Ahead lies an even more brutal battlefield waiting for you. The Creator’s will is about to awaken. Every bit of power you save will increase your chances of victory. It’s better not to waste such a force on an old, fallen God like me.”
Hearing her identity laid bare, Charlotte was momentarily stunned, but she quickly shook her head.
“Oceanus, you are a true God and my friend—possibly the only true God left aside from me. Even if I must contend with the resurrected Creator’s will, you are an indispensable ally!”
Without waiting for Oceanus to respond, she intensified her output of origin power.
The pure white origin power spread further, rapidly purging the corruption within Oceanus.
However, just as Charlotte was about to breathe a sigh of relief, she sensed the corruption within Oceanus surging anew.
Her movements froze.
Despite having used an artifact to sever Oceanus’ connection to external influences, the corruption persisted. Probing deeper, she was shocked to discover that the source of the origin corruption was none other than Oceanus himself!
His divine soul, his divine core, and his divine form were all decaying from the inside out—like water under a scorching desert sun, prolonging the inevitable.
“It seems… you’ve realized. This is not just ordinary corruption.”
Seeing Charlotte’s frozen expression, Oceanus sighed.
He shook his head and said,
“An ally? No. I—or rather, we—will only ever be a burden to you…”
With a faint, melancholic smile, Oceanus spoke in a weak tone, tinged with unwillingness and self-mockery.
“Our power comes from Them. Whenever They wants to reclaim it, They can do so at any moment… Let alone the fact that I was marked by Them long ago during the catastrophe that destroyed the Western Continent.”
“Myth? It’s nothing but a joke.”
“We regard our believers as sheep under our care, but in Their eyes, we—and this world—are nothing more than Their flock.”
“Even a mere wisp of Their breath can destroy a continent. A single glance from Their half-awakened gaze can reduce the mighty Sun God to a puppet.”
“Lilith, this entire world is merely Their garden. Our fate was sealed from the very beginning. The fact that I’ve managed to last this long is, in some sense, already a miracle.”
As Oceanus spoke, His breathing grew heavier. He looked at Charlotte, and within His clouded eyes, a final flicker of determination burned.
“But you are different!”
“Only you! Only you, Lilith! Only you, Charlotte! Only you, the anomaly, can shatter everything! You can overturn it all!”
“Even the one who created everything cannot control an external anomaly. Even They cannot corrupt a God from beyond this world!”
“Preserve this precious origin power! Then… carry with you the will of the Gods of Myria to defeat Them, to triumph over Them!”
“Only then can this endless cycle be broken! Only then can Myria endure!”
Oceanus gritted His teeth, His murky eyes blazing with unrelenting fury, as if He wanted to tear apart the heavens and earth.
But as He roared, His body began to tremble violently. Tendrils of black mist rapidly spread across Him, accelerating the corruption He had barely suppressed.
Sensing the increasingly chaotic aura emanating from Oceanus, Charlotte’s expression shifted slightly.
Yet Oceanus suddenly regained His calm.
He slowly closed His eyes, then opened them again. Despite His feral appearance, His expression was resolutely human.
“Lilith, They… are beginning to notice this place.”
“Kill me. Use my trident to kill me! Before I become another Helios, kill me quickly!”
“Kill me, and devour the divine power and laws within my divinity!”
“The oceans of Myria were not created by Them. The power of the seas is the weakest link in Their dominion… Devour my strength, and you will gain more perfect laws, giving you a better chance to prevail!”
“This… is the last gift I can give you!”
Charlotte’s hands trembled, and her vision grew blurred.
“Oceanus… you…”
Above, the thunder grew fiercer, the dense clouds roiling as if some horrifying force was brewing.
“Quick! Before They fully notices my awakening! Before Their power completely corrupts my authority over the oceans! Quickly!”
Oceanus bellowed.
Looking at Oceanus’ fervent expression and feeling the deep and awakening aura emanating from Him, Charlotte gritted her teeth. Finally, she summoned the golden Sea King’s Trident.
Scenes of her toasts and conversations with Oceanus during her years of traversing history flashed through her mind. Her sorrowful expression hardened into resolve, and then into determination.
Her eyes turned crimson, radiant divine power gathering around her once more. The brilliance infused the Sea King’s Trident as she thrust it toward Oceanus’ heart.
Oceanus smiled.
The dazzling light pierced through the heart of the colossal beast. At that moment… the entire ocean seemed to fall silent.
Oceanus stared dazedly at the girl before Him.
In the haze, He seemed to see that beautiful figure once more.
He felt as though He had returned to that radiant evening, to that golden beach.
The cool sea breeze gently brushed against Him, and the soft sand sparkled with faint golden light under the afterglow.
A delicate elf girl, accompanied by her elder brother, skipped along the beach. Her every step left shallow imprints that were gently smoothed away by the tide, as though time itself slowed and softened in that moment.
The girl stopped at the shore, picking up a wounded, stranded octopus.
Looking into the timid, dark eyes of the little octopus, the girl’s moonlit eyes were filled with compassion.
“Brother Helios, it seems to be injured. Let’s take it back to the village and heal it!”
Her pale, warm palms cradled the octopus. Her voice, as melodious as birdsong, was a heavenly tune.
“Don’t be afraid, little one. Once we heal your wounds, we’ll set you free!”
Oceanus felt as though He was once again enveloped in that warm embrace.
The world faded into the distance, leaving only a rugged, distant sigh echoing in Charlotte’s ears.
“If… someday, you still remember me… or if one day, you happen to think of me…”
“Please bury a seashell… on that golden beach of the Western Continent.”
The massive form disintegrated into fragments of golden light, scattering into the sea with the breeze.
Raindrops began to fall, pattering gently at first before turning into a torrential downpour.
…
It was raining.
