Chapter 41: Stealth Type Purpleback Ant
Chapter 41: Stealth Type Purpleback Ant
While Gabriel and the others prepared for a brutal clash with the Purpleback Drone Ant, a fierce fight was going on at Scarlet’s end.
Unlike Gabriel’s path, which only had three giant sentinels, their path was blocked by roughly 40-plus giant Purpleback Ants.
Rumble! Rumble!
The ground trembled as the ant swarm charged at the group of five humans with the intention of overwhelming them with their numbers.
Scarlet’s blade, which was glowing with silver light, struck the ants down, slicing through their bodies with ease.
Purple blood erupted out, but she dodged it gracefully.
"Die!" Liam roared as he leaped up and struck the head of the two-meter-tall ant.
BANG!
The giant Purpleback Ant reeled back. It staggered as if about to collapse, then regained its stance and attacked with even more ferocity.
Liam’s eyes went bloodshot when he saw that his hammer strike had barely made an impact.
"Damn! Only fucking crack—why are these things so strong?!" he cursed as he slammed his hammer into one of the creature’s slim legs.
Crack!
With over 50 points in strength, the warrior effortlessly shattered the ant’s leg, and it lost its balance, crashing to the ground.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
With an extremely savage expression on his face, he slammed the head of the Purpleback monster until it exploded, spilling purple blood on his face along with brain matter.
Slightly behind—
"Blink!"
"Blink!"
"Blink!"
Alice used hit-and-run tactics.
She wasn’t exactly someone who excelled in strength. Because of her build as an assassin, most of her stats were concentrated on agility and perception.
STAB! STAB! STAB! STAB! STAB!
STAB! STAB! STAB! STAB! STAB!
Shrrrerk!
The ant roared in pain as purple blood slowly pooled all around it. Its round eyes flickered from side to side, unable to follow the human shadow.
Then suddenly, it stopped attacking or making any effort to block—simply remaining motionless.
A small smile appeared on Alice’s face as she slowed down slightly, now targeting only the vitals.
"Blink!"
She vanished again and appeared behind the ant, ready to strike.
However, Alice’s eyes shrank. "It read my movement!"
Yes—the ant had calculated her pattern. A bulb of purple liquid shot out from its mandibles, hitting her squarely in the face.
[Ding! You have been poisoned!]
"Shit!" Alice’s expression darkened as she saw the notification. Anger surged in her heart as she began to attack the monster violently, pouring all her hatred into the assault.
"Fucking bastard! How dare you poison me!"
STAB! STAB!
"Die, filthy insect!"
After a couple of attacks, the ant died, and Alice stumbled back slowly, watching as her HP depleted steadily.
"Lilly, I’ve been poisoned!" she shouted, slowly moving to the rear where the only mage was protecting Lilly—the team’s only healer.
A flash of panic passed through Lilly. She quickly stretched out her arms and cast a healing spell.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
"I—I can’t stop the poison!" she said in a trembling voice, her face pale.
"Fuck! Am I going to die?!" Tears pooled at the corners of Alice’s eyes.
"Scarlet!" Lilly shouted at the top of her voice. "Alice has been poisoned! We need to hurry and find a cure!"
For the first time since the beginning of this expedition, a trace of genuine worry flashed through Scarlet’s eyes.
She tightened her grip on her sword.
"I was holding back all this while because I didn’t know when we’d face the guardian of the main room. They’re usually much more difficult to deal with." Her eyes flashed as she channeled mana into her sword until it pulsed violently.
Then she struck!
A large line of silver light appeared in the air, cutting down all the ants in her path.
Some of the braver ants had tried to take the brunt of her attack and paid dearly with their lives.
When her first strike dissolved, Scarlet struck again!
Her expression was calm and collected, but in her mind, there was only one word:
’Faster. I need to be faster!’
Back at the chamber, the flying Purpleback Drone Ants attacked the group of five humans.
Naturally, Cassie stayed behind, casting [Minor Morale Boost], protected by Sophie and the mage.
Old Man Khrome and Gabriel led the charge.
"Dark Flame Orb!"
BOOM!
The pulsing orb of dark flame erupted on the faces of the flying monsters, destroying several of them instantly. The ones who escaped the blast radius were swiftly cut in half by Gabriel’s Crimson Judgment.
"Flame Wall!"
A swirling whirlwind of flame exploded forward with a loud bang, similar to a cannon blast. All the ants caught in the whirlwind were burned to ashes.
’Such powerful flames...’ Gabriel’s eyes glinted as he witnessed the destructive force of Khrome’s attack.
But he didn’t have time to admire it, as a fatal oversight occurred behind him.
"Shit!" the mage who had been protecting Cassie cursed when he saw an ant break through their formation.
"Grizzlenaught!"
A spectral red creature rose from the ground and grabbed the ant mid-air. Grizzlenaught’s electric-blue eyes flashed as it ripped the head of the large ant from its body, then hurled it at another—a worker ant crawling out from the bottomless pit—sending it back to where it came from.
"Is—is that thing on our side?" the mage stuttered.
"Yes!" Having seen Grizzlenaught before, Sophie and Cassie’s eyes lit up.
Below the bottomless pit, two Purpleback Drone Ants with peculiar appearances slowly rose from the darkness, illuminated by a purple glow.
Unlike the majority of the flying ants, these two had golden stripes along their bodies.
The pair seemed to communicate in ant language. They bobbed their heads as if coming to an agreement, then something astonishing happened.
The golden stripes on their bodies glowed—and they disappeared from the swarm of drones, unnoticed.
BOOM!
Another flying ant exploded into purple mist as Gabriel cleaved upward with Crimson Judgment.
"That’s twenty-two!" Khrome shouted, blasting another wave of flame into the air. "More coming!"
Cassie remained in the center of the group, protected by the mage and Sophie, both standing guard.
"I—I’ll keep the buff active!" she cried out, eyes glowing faintly as [Minor Morale Boost] remained activated.
Suddenly—
SKREEEEEE—!
A strange, piercing shriek echoed—but it wasn’t from the swarm.
Gabriel’s eyes twitched. "What was that sound?"
He turned, but saw nothing. Sophie didn’t notice anything either. Khrome kept firing. Everything seemed to be going well.
Until—
SWOOSH!
From the ceiling above, two golden-striped ants appeared directly over Cassie.
"—Cassie!" Sophie shouted, sensing their presence.
Everyone turned—too late.
Cassie’s mouth opened in shock as something slammed into her from above.
"Ahh—!"
CRACK!!
Her small figure was lifted off the ground violently by two elite drones. Her body was yanked high into the air before anyone could react.
"How did they—?!" Gabriel roared.
"NO!" Sophie shouted, reaching up with her vines—but missed.
Cassie’s arms flailed as she plunged into the bottomless pit below, disappearing from everyone’s line of sight.
