Chapter 38: Monster Eggs [Bonus Chapter]

"...That’s not funny," Alice muttered, a frown on her face.

"Of course, I could be wrong," Gabriel added.

As they headed deeper, they saw treasure that seemed relatively new, as if it had just recently been dropped by monsters.

No one made an attempt to pick it up, afraid it could be a trap.

After a while, however, Sophie suddenly came to a stop. So far, they had not encountered any traps.

Crouching low under the stunned gazes of the others, she picked up one of the treasures on the ground.

The adventurers held their breath, expecting some mechanism to activate—but nothing happened.

"I thought as much. There’s no trap in this tunnel," Scarlet announced.

Everyone’s eyes lit up instantly like fireworks.

"Really?!"

"And we left all those behind!"

Liam, who was behind the group, was the second person to pick up a double-bladed sword.

"There’s really no trap!" he exclaimed, laughing loudly. "Hahahaha, I’m going back!"

One after the other, they retraced their steps and collected any treasure they could find.

Unfortunately, there was no skill scroll lying casually on the ground for them to pick up.

"As expected. Even in a place like this, where treasure is supposed to be everywhere, those little books are still rare to find," Cassie said.

The majority of the treasures they found were weapons, armor pieces, or gemstones. Although they didn’t look like much, they could still be sold for a decent price.

"Besides, we’re only at the outer area," Old Man Khrome laughed heartily. "The good stuff is usually deeper."

Unlike most of the group, Khrome wasn’t wealthy. Despite being a level 50 adventurer, he was barely scraping by.

This haul alone would help ease his burden quite a bit.

Gabriel had also collected a few weapons, which he planned to check out later.

Some time later, they exited the tunnels and arrived before a single stone door.

But this door didn’t require them to solve a puzzle—it only required them to be within five meters for it to open.

And once they were within range, the door shifted, stone grinding loudly as part of the wall twisted open to reveal another room.

It was a long, arched chamber with purple crystal vines growing from the ceiling.

As soon as they stepped inside, they saw several mechanical constructs standing on the other side, their eyes glowing red.

"GOLEMS AGAIN?!" shouted one of the mages.

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. There was something very different about these golems.

The 1.80-meter-tall constructs were slimmer than the ones outside. Their frames were athletic. Unlike before, these didn’t lumber or roar. They just moved—fast and in perfect silence.

"Incoming!"

One of the constructs vanished from sight and reappeared behind Alice.

"[Blink]!"

She barely teleported away in time as the thing’s clawed hand cleaved through the air where she had just been standing.

Scarlet’s voice rang out as she slashed down a golem that tried to sneak up on her. "Be careful, everyone! These golems are much faster—designed to eliminate opponents as swiftly as possible!"

"Are you telling me they’re ninjas?!" Alice yelped as she rolled to avoid another strike.

Scarlet drew her sword without saying a word and slashed upward, catching one of the super-fast golems midair and cutting it cleanly in half.

"Fast!" Old Man Khrome frowned from the rear as one of his fireballs fizzled uselessly against a sentinel’s glowing barrier.

Sophie gritted her teeth and summoned more vines, but the sentinels dodged with perfect agility.

Lilly and Cassie were protected by the two mages, who fired magical attacks at any construct that managed to slip past the others.

"They’re learning," Sophie muttered. "It’s as if they can read all our attacks perfectly."

"Then it’s a damn good thing we’ve got someone dumber than they are!" Liam shouted, swinging his warhammer like a lunatic and smashing one clean through a wall.

The golems were fast, but for people like Scarlet and Gabriel—whose agility stats were around 100—they could easily match that speed.

"Hmph!" Gabriel activated Vicious Pounce, combining it with his impressive agility. All the golems in his path were cut down by Crimson Judgement.

SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!

Some time later, the fighting finally ceased, and all the golems had been dealt with.

"The good thing about these creatures is that they reward experience and EP points," Gabriel thought as the group continued through the chamber.

Naturally, they encountered a few more golems, but those were mostly dealt with. They also picked up some mid-tier treasures along the way.

By the time they stepped into the next room, a terrible smell hit them. Everyone was forced to bring out a piece of cloth to cover their noses.

"Heh." Gabriel looked out of the corner of his eye and noticed a slight twitch on Scarlet’s face.

Scarlet was known for her stoicism. If this smell could crack her expression, Gabriel didn’t think anyone else could endure it.

"Where is that smell even coming from?!" Alice wrinkled her nose.

Unlike the previous chambers, this one was dark, so magical skills were activated once more to illuminate the path.

They seemed to be in a chamber even larger than the last one—about the size of two football fields combined.

But that wasn’t what sent shivers down the spines of those present—it was what lay around them.

There were dozens of what appeared to be purple, cracked egg casings as far as the eye could see.

The walls were lined with organic, nest-like honeycomb structures that pulsed faintly.

"Where are we?"

"Are those monster eggs?"

"The eggs are cracked. The monsters are definitely outside—be careful!" Sophie warned urgently.

Drip! Drip!

At that moment, Cassie, standing at the rear, felt a sticky liquid fall on her cheek. She frowned, wiping it away with one finger, then dazedly stared up at the ceiling of the chamber.

What she saw left her momentarily frozen on the spot—speechless!
