Chapter 19: Dad’s breakfast
Alex quickly crawled into bed and hid under the covers.
"Mommy, I’m really tired today and want to sleep early. Let me try on the dress tomorrow," he said.
"Oh, okay."
Although confused, Cecilia saw how exhausted Alex looked. She followed him and got into bed, hugging him as they both tried to sleep.
As Alex lay in bed, he could feel her embrace as she gently patted his back.
Her breathing slowly steadied, indicating that she had fallen asleep.
However, he was still awake. He quietly watched Cecilia’s face under the faint moonlight from the window.
Her gentle features and the slight smile at the corner of her lips made it seem like she was happy even in her dreams.
A warm feeling surged in Alex’s heart, one he had never experienced before.
So, this is what having a mom felt like—warmth, comfort, as if all his worries were gone in her embrace.
He moved slightly, wanting to get closer to her. However, he was scared of waking her up. In the end, he could only lie quietly, feeling her body heat and breath. His eyelids gradually grew heavier, his consciousness turning fuzzier before he finally fell asleep.
The next morning, Emma was awakened by a pungent smell.
Rubbing her eyes, she groggily sat up and wrinkled her nose at the smell. She followed it to the kitchen and saw Steven at the stove, earnestly frying something with a spatula.
"Daddy?" She rubbed her eyes, unable to believe what she was seeing.
Hearing her voice, Steven turned around and smiled confidently. "Alex, you’re awake? Come try Dad’s breakfast!"
Emma walked over and saw a dark mass in the pot, unable to discern the ingredients.
After punishing the two nutritionists yesterday, Steven felt guilty for not looking over Alex properly. Thus, he decided to cook for his ’son’ today.
Emma was excited about it yesterday, but seeing the finished dish today made her feel uneasy.
Her lips twitched, but she forced a nod. "Okay... I’ll try it."
Steven spooned the unidentified object onto a plate and gave it to her with an expectant look. "Try it quickly. It’s the first time Dad cooked."
Emma picked up the plate, feeling dreadful as she stared at the pool of dark mass.
She glanced up at Steven, feeling pressured by his hopeful eyes.
Taking a deep breath, she gingerly forked a small piece and put it in her mouth.
Instantly, a burnt taste exploded in her mouth, mixed with a strange salty and sour taste.
She almost spit it out, but she forcefully swallowed it after seeing Steven’s hopeful look. After all, her dad was cooking for her for the first time.
She forced a smile as she said, "It’s... delicious!"
Steven’s eyes lit up in triumph. "Really? Then Dad will make more for you!"
Emma’s smile froze as she cried out in her mind, ’Oh no no no! Brother Alex, please come back quickly!’
Just then, Zane walked in and immediately noticed the pungent smell. His eyebrows furrowed as he asked, "Mr. Lawrence, did you... cook something?"
Steven nodded proudly. "Yes. Alex said it tastes delicious, so I’m planning to make more for him."
Zane walked to the table and glanced at the sorry excuse of a dish. His mouth twitched as he said, "Mr. Lawrence, may I try it?"
Steven graciously nodded and replied, "Of course."
Zane picked up a piece with a fork and ate it. He immediately turned pale, rushing to spit it out into the trash can.
"Mr. Lawrence, this... this is inedible!" he wiped his mouth, looking pained.
Steven’s face darkened as he turned to Emma. "Alex, didn’t you say it was delicious?"
Emma lowered her head, mumbling, "I... I didn’t want to disappoint Daddy..."
He was surprised for a bit before he sighed and ruffled her hair. "Silly child, just tell me if it tastes bad. Dad wouldn’t be angry."
She looked up with bright eyes as she said, "Really?"
He nodded with a wry smile. "Yes."
At this moment, Zane interjected, "Mr. Lawrence, since you’re bad at cooking, why not hire a professional nutritionist?"
Steven frowned, clearly having trust issues with people now.
Just then, Zane recalled something. He suggested, "I remember Miss Morrison recommended a person before. Should we contact her?"
Thinking of Cecilia’s cunning methods, Steven firmly refused.
"No need, I’ll do the cooking on my own."
Emma felt sad when she heard their conversation.
She went to squat at a corner, absentmindedly drawing circles on the ground with her finger. She mumbled to herself, "I finally found Brother and Daddy, but why must I suffer like this... Ugh, Daddy’s cooking is so bad...I miss Mommy’s cooking..."
She was so engrossed in her rant that she didn’t notice Steven standing behind her.
