Chapter 64: Some Distant Cousin

Chapter 64: Some Distant Cousin

"What now?"

"A bet," Matthew said smoothly, glancing at the attendant. "You’ll be our witness."

The attendant blinked, unsure, but nodded in response. "Of course, sir."

Matthew turned back to them. "If I can pay for this truck in full, right now, no loans, no financing, each of you will send me $50,000 within the next hour."

Dean raised a brow. "That’s it?"

"And," Matthew added. "You’ll also serve as my driver and personal attendant at the Valentine’s Gala."

"And if you lose?" Adam asked.

"I will give you a hundred thousand each. How’s that?" Matthew smiled.

"If you lose, you give us a hundred thousand and you kneel and apologize in front of the entire school. You will also be our attendant for a week, you will buy our food and everything that we want using your own money. How’s that?" Dean said.

Matthew lifted an eyebrow this time. He hadn’t expected Dean to be this ruthless.

Matthew eyed the tattoo Dean no longer bothered to hide. Now that it was out in the open, it struck him as something tied to family—maybe even legacy. He remembered trying to piece together what happened to Dean and his family after graduation, but nothing ever stood out. They left the city quietly, and Matthew never heard from them again. Still, he knew Dean came from another prominent family.

Meanwhile, Marc is also someone from a prominent family. Matthew watched as Adam took a half-step back as Dean and Marc leaned in close.

"This is perfect," Dean whispered. "Fifty thousand? We’ve blown more than that on weekend trips. He loses, we get a hundred each, and we get to watch him kneel. Priceless."

"I’m in," Marc said quickly. "We’ll never get a shot like this again."

Adam didn’t answer right away. His eyes narrowed on Matthew, who was casually running his fingers across the steering wheel like he didn’t have a care in the world.

"He wouldn’t be this confident if he didn’t have something to back it up," Adam muttered.

"What are you saying?" Dean frowned.

"I’m saying—he might actually be able to pay."

Marc scoffed. "He’s not even a real Lindberg."

"Exactly," Adam said. "And yet he’s acting like one. "

Dean rolled his eyes. "Bro, relax. If we lose, we just don’t pay. What’s he going to do? Cry? File a lawsuit? It’s just a bet. Besides, I heard he is having problems with Lenox because of that bitch Catherine. Who knows if the Lindberg Family would kick him out soon?"

"I heard about that too. I was there when he pushed Lenox down at the cafeterian." Marc chuckled. "And It’s not like we signed a contract."

Adam gritted his teeth. "Still..."

He thought of his father’s voice echoing in his head the night before: Get close to Young Master Keller. That dealership is opening doors to the business circle, and Keller’s the key. The man had patents worth hundreds of millions! If he could get someone like this as his friend, he would surely soar after graduation.

Dean turned back toward the truck and raised his voice just enough for Matthew to hear. "Hey, Matt."

Matthew looked up lazily. "Hm?"

"Where’d you get the money, huh?" Dean asked. "We all know you were only in that school because the Lindberg patriarch took pity on you. Charity case, remember? Did you finally sell your soul?"

Marc snorted behind him. "Or maybe a kidney?"

Matthew didn’t answer immediately. He opened the driver’s side door and stepped out slowly. "Funny. You seem really interested in my bank account all of a sudden. Should I be worried, Dean?"

Dean smirked. "You think anyone’s buying this whole rich-guy act? We’ve seen where you came from. Aren’t you just Lenox’s dog? Hmph! Don’t tell us that you are going to call Young Master Lenox to pay for the car?"

"Are we betting or not?" Matthew smiled.

As if on cue, Frank’s voice echoed behind them. "What a lively scene..."

"Frank!" Adam immediately perked up when he saw Frank Keller. He walked towards the man and held his hand. "We met last weekend?"

"Huh... I remember you..." Frank shook Adam’s hand. "Adam, right? Adam Weatherford?"

"Yes!"

Frank looked at Adam for a moment, then gave a polite nod. "Right, I remember now. You were with your uncle at the Fremont Golf Club, weren’t you?"

Adam smiled. "Yeah. That was me. I didn’t expect to see you here today."

Frank gestured loosely around them. "Sometimes I stop by to check the layout. This dealership’s still getting things sorted. I figured I’d drop in."

Adam nodded quickly. "It’s a great setup. Honestly. Super clean. High-end. You’ve done well."

"Appreciate that," Frank said. "Are you here to look around some of the newer models?"

Adam glanced at his friends, then back at Frank. "Yeah, actually. We were just checking things out. Let me introduce my friends."

He motioned behind him. "This is Dean Fitz and Marc Tallon."

Frank’s gaze shifted toward them, then flicked toward Matthew, who was now leaning back against the open door of the truck, arms crossed. Matthew gave a small shake of his head, just once, barely noticeable. Frank caught it.

He said nothing.

Instead, Dean stepped forward with a grin. "Actually, Frank, since you’re here, you should join our little bet. Might make things more fun."

Frank lifted an eyebrow. "Oh? What bet?"

Dean gestured toward Matthew. "If this guy can pay for this car in full, right now, we each give him fifty thousand. If he can’t, he owes us a hundred grand each."

Frank blinked. He looked back at Matthew, who only smirked and didn’t move from his spot.

"Are you in?" Frank asked, looking at Adam.

Adam nodded. "Yeah. I’m in."

Frank’s expression didn’t change. He glanced at Matthew again, then back at Adam.

Adam noticed the shift and quickly added, "I mean, Matthew’s just bragging. He’s not even from here. He’s the adopted son of the Lindberg family. There’s no way he can pay for something like this on his own."

Dean added, "Yeah, he’s some distant cousin from a mountain somewhere. I think Lenox brought him in just to clean his boots or something."

Marc chuckled quietly.

Frank looked between them. "Lenox Lindberg?"

Adam nodded. "Yeah. You probably haven’t met him yet. He’s the heir of the Lindberg family. Matthew’s just one of his dogs."

Frank didn’t reply immediately as he walked closer to the truck, casually scanning it. "So... this Lenox Lindberg is the heir of the Lindberg family?" He looked at Matthew, then towards Adam. "How come I didn’t know that the Lindberg family had changed their heir?"
