Chapter 690 - 690: Devastated Bald Man

After four days of continuous fighting, without any sleep, the soldiers of the Aradonia city successfully defended against the first wave of the beast tide. The soldiers stationed inside the city filled the slots for their dead brothers in arms.

They did not seem very happy about their placements, dreading that it would be their doom next, but their worries seemed to be unnecessary, as not a single beast attacked the city for a while.

The instructors told them that it was normal and the tides usually happened randomly, so they should stay vigilant even though the city was not under attack.

For some time, the peace lasted until the second tide arrived without any sort of signal. One day the forest was eerily calm, and the other day, a wave of tier 1 monsters was charging on the west city gate.

The guards on the west side were caught off guard; they were relaxed, thinking that the spirit beasts had chosen the east side and they would stick to it, but they never thought that the next target would be them instead.

The instructors and the other soldiers who had faced the beast tide naturally were aware that the beasts were capable of being spontaneous with their attacks, and they were not easily flustered.

The second wave of the tide was composed of both the unranked beasts and Rank 1 spirit beasts, and their numbers were almost twice that of the first wave.

While the soldiers were facing the wave with their lives, someone else just started training to fight deep within the safe bounds of the city.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" A middle-aged instructor with a bald head looked down at the woman kneeling before him with a complicated look on his face.

He first noticed the woman spying on their training sessions; when he caught her, she insisted that she wanted to join in on the training, but he refused her instantly.

After all, everyone in Aradonia was aware that the women had weak minds and physical abilities.

But that was not the only reason the city lord had to refuse free soldiers; when the young men were out there fighting, someone was needed to run the families and the city on the inside to fund the war against the beasts.

The married woman had their families to take care of, and the unmarried one had jobs to run.

At first women were allowed to fight as well, but the number of orphans grew exponentially for even the orphanage to handle.

The instructor's refusal did not faze the woman; she continued to bother him with her requests to train under him. In the end he finally gave her a set of tasks to complete in a month, and if she was able to do it, he would train her.

The tasks he gave her were so difficult even the most talented men in the squad needed months, if not half a year, to complete, and here she was…

This woman named Andis not only completed the tasks he gave her, but she completed them within two weeks, which left him with mixed emotions.

Andis raised her head and looked the man in the eye before nodding with deep emotions. "I will complete every task you offer and achieve every goal you ask of me. So… please train me!"

The conviction in her cold eyes and the dirt on her tanned body showed him the proof that what she said were not mere empty words.

"Very well," Heaving a long sigh, the bald guard agreed to train her. "But first go take a shower; you are a mess. Did you not even take a shower in two weeks?"

Andis was covered in dirt from head to toe; her clothes were wrinkled and torn. Even her skin had shriveled as if she had not eaten or drunk in days.

The instructor seemed to have realized this as well but did not point it out.

"I have no house or place to stay, nor do I have any other clothes to wear." Her emotionless words left the man stumped. Rubbing his forehead, he took her to his own quarters, where no one but him lived.

While she was bathing, he went out to buy clothes for her from the shop that sold old clothes. Hearing the sound of the water running when he returned, something flickered in his chest.

The instructor looked towards the closed bathroom and unconsciously licked his dry lips. He slowly walked up to the wooden door and, with a light swing, opened the door.

The sound of the water running stopped, and silence dripped in the air. The instructor paused at the door for a moment before he stepped in and closed the door behind him, breaking the silence once more.

Days after days, Andis continued to train under his guidance during the day while he embraced her in the cold night. Andis offered no resistance or words of approval at his actions and allowed everything to happen as it did.

Under the bald man's instructions, she was improving, and very fast at that. She managed to learn the basics of the yellow rank earth-shattering spear technique within three days.

By the end of one week since she was taken in as the disciple under the instructor, Andis heard the news about her husband once more.

She heard that he had died in the second wave that recently ended, protecting the west gate.

For the first time, Andis showed an emotion; a smile appeared on her face. A chilling one.

Fortunately, her teacher was not there to see the smile, as he had gone to inform Gong Ho that she managed to reach a proficient level in the spear technique, or he would have been scared shitless seeing the deadly smile on her face.

By the time he returned, the smile was long gone, replaced by the old indifference. The instructor did not come alone; he brought Gong Ho along with him. Gong Ho saw Andis perform the yellow grade spear technique, and his eyes lit up.

Without giving the bald instructor any face, he told her to move to the city lord's mansion along with him, where he would train her personally.

Andis ignored the hopeful and pleading look in the instructor's eyes and instantly agreed to his offer. She did not even look towards the devastated man, packed the things in the room, and walked away with Gong Ho.
