Chapter 164: Death Storm (Part-2)
Apollo didn’t know what Alyona was thinking, but his thoughts were focused on the strength of Crimson City. It wasn’t weak—far from it. In addition to the formidable City Lord, he sensed several powerful auras hidden throughout the city.
However, despite this strength, they weren’t sure how much damage they would endure or if they would even survive the coming threat.
The mission they had been given was to help the city survive, which implied that without their intervention, Crimson City was destined to be annihilated. This realization led him to believe that the Death Storm would be far more powerful than they had anticipated.
There are many limit-breaking realm warriors in the city, and they have well-reinforced walls to stop most of the attacks, but they cannot stop attacks from the sky or the strong zombies with strength above fourth rank.
But thankfully, this city wasn’t incapable of fighting; otherwise, it was difficult for their group of ten to save it.
Apollo was thinking all of this and finding different ways to face the future situation, but thankfully, it is related to the law of death, which means he was like in his home ground. Not to mention, he has a special Trump card for such a place, making him more confident.
However, even with his confidence, Apollo knew he couldn’t afford to be careless.
Time passed, and night appeared as the sky became pitch black with the eerie aura of death reaching its peak and a dark mist like something started to gather in the Death Desert that made every beast or life form in it feel uncomfortable and afraid.
A dark, ominous aura began to swirl in the distance, with black winds whipping across the desert, threatening to tear the very ground apart. Tornadoes spun violently, rising all around, creating a chaotic dance of destruction.
Boom! Bang!
The sky, now pitch-black, crackled with the fury of countless lightning bolts, roaring as if heralding the arrival of an impending armageddon.
Inside the city, a wave of fear swept through the people. Anxiety gripped their hearts as they hurried to find shelter, many hiding in basements or cowering in the corners of their homes, desperate to escape the looming disaster.
"It’s coming," Apollo muttered as he and Alyona stood at the northern side of the city, watching the ominous horizon.
Their group of ten had been divided into four smaller teams, each responsible for guarding a different direction of the city. The three grandmasters had formed one group, while Kaleb and his friends split into two others.
This left Apollo, Pussy King and Alyona paired together, the tthree of them keeping to themselves, exchanging few words, and maintaining a quiet distance from the rest.
But they weren’t alone, as other soldiers from the city were also there to maintain this side. Apollo glanced at them and tried to gauge their strength. And like he thought they weren’t weak, here in this single place he found three other fourth-rank beings and many second- or third-rank soldiers guarding this place.
The tension in the air was palpable, with everyone fully aware of the impending threat that loomed just beyond the city walls.
The dark storm of death began creating havoc across the land. Finally, Apollo and the others in Crimson City saw the dark aura of death and decay in the form of a storm, rapidly approaching and swallowing everything in its path.
"Activate it." A loud voice echoed throughout the city. While all of them braced themselves, the outer gigantic wall surprisingly began to glow with a faint white light, creating a thin barrier around the city.
Apollo was surprised to notice that the barrier didn’t seem to have strong defensive capabilities. Instead, it emitted an aura similar to life or light. He didn’t have to wait long to see its true purpose, as the death storm finally hit Crimson City, engulfing it entirely within seconds.
Szzz... Szzzz...
The strong winds howled, and the dark aura tried to penetrate the city. But just at that moment, the thin barrier of white light came into play, immediately stopping the dark, eerie aura in its tracks and preventing it from entering the city.
The storm hissed and crackled as it met the barrier, the sound a mix of fury and frustration. The dark energy swirled and roiled, but the white light held firm, preventing the malevolent force from entering the city.
Apollo watched in awe as the barrier continued to hold back the storm. The city’s defences were far more sophisticated than he had anticipated.
Even as the storm raged outside, the city remained calm within the barrier. The tension among the soldiers eased slightly, but everyone knew this was only the beginning.
As everyone waited patiently, tense and ready for action, a few moments later, the movement came from outside the city.
Grrr Grrr...
Weird sounds can be heard from within the darkness, as slowly something starts to appear from all directions.
Apollo, ahead of others, finally saw what it was with his strong spiritual strength and his understanding of the law of death. What he saw would make anyone’s blood run cold, though not just from fear—from the sheer magnitude of what was approaching.
He saw countless zombies of different creatures—whether humans, beasts, or something else—all drawn to the city like moths to a flame. They swarmed towards the city, their numbers growing by the moment as if the city itself was a beacon, irresistibly pulling them in.
These zombies, countless in number, shambled and dragged themselves across the desert sands toward Crimson City. But these weren’t just any zombies. They were twisted, nightmarish versions of what they once were—humans, beasts, and creatures beyond easy identification, all drawn by some dark, insatiable hunger.
Apollo’s eyes narrowed as he observed the horde. The zombies moved in a grotesque, unnatural way, but they weren’t slow like the zombies he saw in movies in previous life but were fast just like they were when they were alive.
"They’re coming," Apollo said, his voice low but steady, alerting the others to the imminent threat. The group of soldiers tensed as the figures emerged from the storm’s veil, becoming more visible with each passing second.
Whether it was Alyona standing beside or the other three fourth-rank grandmasters from the city, they were surprised to see him find their enemies arrive this quickly, even when the outside was covered in darkness filled with a weird aura of death that made it difficult for them to understand what was happening outside.
The soldiers stationed along the walls readied their weapons, their eyes widening in horror as they too began to see the approaching horde.
The zombies moved with an unnerving silence, only the faint growls and the shuffling of their decaying bodies breaking the stillness.
As the horde grew closer, the city’s barrier of light continued to hold back the storm’s deathly aura, but it did nothing to deter the zombies. They were drawn to the city like iron to a magnet, their dead eyes locked on the walls of Crimson City.
Sensing the rising tension among the soldiers, one of the fourth-rank warriors of the city and the commander here spoke up, his voice calm and authoritative. "Prepare yourselves. This is just the beginning. They will keep coming, wave after wave, until the storm passes or we fall. We must hold the line."
The group of soldiers nodded, their expressions grim but resolute. They had faced many challenges before, but this was different. This was a battle not just for survival but for the very soul of Crimson City.
As the first wave of zombies reached the city’s barrier, they slammed against it with a sickening thud.
But it didn’t seem to do much as they easily crossed the light barrier, as it seemed to only stop the weird black death aura around and not the physical zombies.
Boom! Bang! Boom! Bang!...
Countless zombies banged on the walls and quickly began to climb the towering structures. The soldiers above didn’t hesitate; they launched their attacks from the safety of the walls, knowing that even though the zombies they faced were weak, they dared not cross the light barrier and go below.
Strong warriors like Apollo, Alyono, or other grandmasters didn’t attack as the first wave was the weakest, and the zombies outside now were weak as they didn’t even have the strength of first-rank limit-breakers. The thousands of soldiers on the walls were enough for such a situation.
They all needed to conserve their energy, as they didn’t know how long this Death Storm would last.
As the first wave of zombies crashed against the city’s walls, their attempts to scale the structures were met with fierce resistance from the defenders.
The initial onslaught was fierce, but the soldiers on the walls weren’t weak; despite the overwhelming numbers, they managed to keep the zombies at bay with disciplined attacks and a well-coordinated defence.
The weakest of them were strong as warriors who opened nine prana circuits, and there were thousands of limit breakers in them; they were a well-deserved force.
Boom! Bang! Boom! Bang!...
The sounds of battle echoed through the night as arrows flew, magic spells lit up the dark sky, and the clash of steel met the rotting flesh of the zombies. The soldiers’ strategy was simple but effective: hold the walls and push back the zombies before they could breach the city.
