Chapter 153: A Test of Skills (1)
Caleb could read Jess’s thoughts from her hardened expression, prompting him to reassure her again. In line with his words came the realisation that Jess was outmatched in this situation.
’I need to get her out of here...’ Caleb’s eyes darted around as he spotted the person he was searching for. Noticing the tigerkin had his eyes on him, Caleb whispered into Jess’s ears as he shifted his eyes to Luc and his men.
"Remember the tigerkin...?" The catwoman nodded. "Good... He plans on helping us break out of this encirclement."
"Is that even doable with this many people?" Jess questioned skeptically.
"You don’t have to fight." Caleb explained. "You two just have to get out of here while I hold them back."
"..."
For a moment, Jess didn’t reply, her brows deeply furrowed. "Don’t you dare get hurt." She warned.
"Hehe, you don’t have to worry." Caleb rose to his feet with Jess clinging to his hips. Staring directly at the hooded figure, he said: "Let’s make a deal..."
"Ooh..." Luc was mildly amused. "Do tell..."
"I know you’re only interested in me..." Caleb said, his eyes shifting towards the tigerkin. At this point, Crusher knew his gaze was intentional. "Why don’t you let her go?" Again, his eyes shifted to the tigerkin.
The act was subtle, and with the darkness of the night, many did not understand what Caleb was doing. For those who caught his little act, they presumed he was searching for an opening.
Luc was among the people who noticed this. His head turned slightly to the two on his left. The men understood his gesture and, in a flash, moved to block that line of sight.
"And why would I do that, Mr. Zane?" Luc asked with an amused smile unseen by all. "Clearly, you don’t want to see her harmed. This makes things easier for me..."
"You don’t say..." Caleb’s gaze looked at the two figures who were ’blocking’ his path of escape. He looked back at Luc and sighed. "It was worth a try..." Looking back in Crusher’s direction, he shouted.
"Now!"
The moment the last syllabus left his mouth, Caleb made a dash at the two hooded figures who stood in his way, Jess in his arms. At the same time, Crusher made his move, lunging at one of the magic suppression poles.
"What are you doing?!"
The bounty hunters and knights standing guard at the pole exclaimed in horror, drawing everyone’s attention. Snapping his head towards the exclamation, Luc realised what was happening and cursed.
"We have a mole!"
Luc shouted as he charged after Caleb in desperation, the other two right behind him. Despite his swift response, no one had anticipated something like that happening.
CRACK!
The magic circle above cracked and then shattered in a purple light show. One of its nodes was gone, and despite the presence of the other poles, there had to be an equal distance between each pole.
Caleb flashed a devilish grin when he arrived before the first two hooded individuals. Without hesitation, the two individuals attacked with their weapons.
Unfortunately for them, they were not his match. Caleb moved like a ghostly entity, whooshing through and past the two individuals with adept acrobatic skills.
While he bypassed his attackers, the delay was more than enough for Luc to reach Caleb. This was not an issue, as Caleb only wanted Jess to escape.
"The two of you should go! Don’t look back!"
Caleb shouted as he landed on the ground and spun around with Jess’s hand clasped in his. After a single rotation, Jess was sent flying above everyone’s head, heading straight toward and beyond Crusher’s location.
Seeing Jess flying towards the walls and away from the estate’s ground, Crusher wasted no time as he too took off, running past the flabbergasted knights and bounty hunters.
"Stop them!"
Commander Axel ordered in a loud voice, running after the tigerkin and Jess. Meanwhile, Luc arrived before Caleb and delivered a devastating strike that sent him skidding backwards.
"Attack!"
Luc ordered and charged at Caleb once more. Magic was restored, and if he delayed more than necessary, Caleb might slip out of their grasp.
The knights and bounty hunters were already trying to restore the circle while the rest created a barricade, their weapons and spells at the ready.
Before Caleb could halt his skidding, Luc and his men were already on him, putting him on his toes. Abruptly, he bent backwards as Luc’s sword swung towards his face.
At the same time, from his left and right sides, two men thrust their swords towards his sides. And from the back came the final two, who went low as they targeted his back and footing.
’You wish!’
Caleb inwardly snorted as he lifted himself off the ground, turning around as his eyes and body glowed with mana. With a flicker, his body disappeared and instantly reappeared above Luc, who was supposed to be flying over Caleb.
"!"
The hooded leader’s instincts flared as soon as Caleb disappeared. He managed to turn around just in time to see Caleb throwing a punch his way.
’Shit!’
It wouldn’t have been too much of an issue if the blow wasn’t charged with mana. Caleb’s fist was shimmering in turquoise hues as it closed in on Luc’s back.
BOOM...!
The blow connected, burying the leader into the blackened earth, face-first. A groan escaped Luc’s lips as the blow shook his system more than expected.
His men were slower in their reaction time as they failed to see Caleb reappear above Luc. However, they managed to redirect the momentum of their attacks a split second later.
’Hehe. Too slow!’
His mana flared to life once more, attempting to teleport out of the way. However, what was supposed to be his playground turned against him. His gathered mana was abruptly stripped away when the magic suppression poles came back online.
’Fuck...’
Left with no choice, Caleb braced himself for impact, shielding his head from the incoming strikes. Three loud clangs echoed in the night as the weapons clashed against his armour.
The final attack came in the form of a punch to the face Caleb failed to see. One of the men had switched their blades for a blow, clearly expecting a rebound like earlier.
"Ugh!"
A satisfying crunch resounded right after the heavy clangs, eliciting a groan of pain from Caleb. The blow sent him straight into the ground, the force pushing him through the earth, leaving a trench in his wake.
