Gamers Are Fierce -
Chapter 65 Patrol
Chapter 65: Chapter 65 Patrol
These teammates seem rather unfriendly... Li Ang thought, pulling out his phone to check the time. It was 11:40 PM, only 20 minutes until midnight.
He cleared his throat, just about to say something when a System prompt sounded in his ear.
[All players have arrived. The next mission hint will now be announced.]
[At 12:00 AM, players will take on the role of security personnel inside Longheng Mall, searching the entire building to find six different paper Talismans scattered around.]
[When the game begins, each player will receive a Cinnabar Brush. This is a plot prop that cannot be placed in the backpack slot and cannot be taken out after the mission ends.]
[Players must use the Cinnabar Brush to trace the patterns on the Talismans onto the floors of each level of the mall.]
[During the game, Ghosts will be patrolling within the mall. If a player makes any sound or light, it will immediately attract the Ghosts’ attention, and they will be pursued.]
[Players must maintain a certain distance from each other. If they approach one another, they must immediately separate, or else it will attract the Ghosts’ attention, and they will be pursued.]
[Players must keep moving and cannot stay in one place for too long, or else it will attract the Ghosts’ attention, and they will be pursued.]
[Ghosts are unable to find or destroy the Talismans.]
[Once all six Talismans are traced, the mission will be considered complete.]
[If the six Talismans are not traced by 3:00 AM, the mission will be considered a failure.]
[Mission reward 1: An additional 300 Experience Points.]
[Mission reward 2: 500 Game Coins.]
[Mission reward 3: One random item of random quality.]
[Mission reward 4: One free attribute point.]
[Failure penalty: Erasure.]
Li Ang sucked in a sharp breath.
Before this, all the missions he had encountered so far had been very straightforward: [Kill the Possessed Ghost], [Kill the Zombie], [Discover the Truth], and so on. Even if there were elements of deduction and puzzle-solving, they depended on the player’s individual performance and were not necessary for mission completion.
But this [Hide and Seek] was entirely different. The mission completion requirements and hints were equally meticulous and detailed.
This wasn’t just a helpful heads-up from the System; it was also a malicious hint at how difficult and dangerous this mission would be...
A single slip-up could lead to the annihilation of the whole group.
"Everyone," the figure wearing a motorcycle helmet clapped his hands to attract everyone’s attention, "it’s 11:42 PM now. We have 18 minutes until the mission starts. The difficulty of this mission is considerable. The System has given us this time, probably for us to exchange information in advance, get to know our teammates, and develop a basic plan for clearing the level. We can only get out alive by working together. I suggest we start by sharing our player IDs."
With that, he took the initiative to disclose his own ID:
[Miraculous Healing · Plague Doctor][Lv6]
Miraculous Healing? Likely a title related to medical first aid, Li Ang mused.
Player forums were full of such pre-battle briefing posts. Since the Plague Doctor had taken the initiative to show goodwill, everyone present—none of whom were newbies—began to share their IDs and levels.
The burly man: [Armor Guardian · Ao Yong][Lv6]
The player in the supermarket employee uniform: [Proud Skateboarder · Lost Airship][Lv5]
Liu Wu Dai: [Thunderbolt Bow · Wu Dai][Lv5]
Li Ang: [Frenzied Ripper · Li Rising][Lv6]
All five players looked at each other’s information with a sinking feeling.
The team missions released by the Killing Field Game System were formulated based on the players’ overall strength. Everyone present was Lv5 or higher, and their levels were comparable. This implied their individual strengths weren’t much above average, offering no significant advantage.
The Plague Doctor let out a breath and said in a clear voice, "Time is limited, so I’ll skip the small talk. According to the System’s prompt, we are to play the roles of security personnel. When I entered the mall, I noticed all the security guards were gone..."
Ao Yong raised a hand and said, "That was me. I was the first one here. To avoid revealing our identities, I dealt with them beforehand: tied them up, knocked them out, and dumped them in the flowerbeds outside the mall. They definitely won’t wake up before three o’clock."
"I see..." The Plague Doctor nodded, walked to the door, and patted the glass. He found the glass front seemed fused with space itself; it was completely immobile no matter how he tapped. Pedestrians passing outside acted as if they didn’t see the oddly-dressed people inside at all.
As an experienced player, the Plague Doctor naturally understood this was the System automatically creating a Barrier to block external interference once the game began.
"I triggered the mission this morning," Ao Yong recalled something and said. "After the mission was triggered, I gathered some information on Longheng Square through various channels. Since all of you are veterans, I suppose you have made various preparations as well."
The Plague Doctor silently nodded, while Lost Airship flashed a grin and remained silent.
That was the great thing about cooperative missions with experienced players: no need to painstakingly explain the strategy.
"Good." Ao Yong nodded. "Longheng Mall has had five fatal incidents in the past twelve years. First, an engineer died after falling from a three-meter-high scaffold during early construction surveys.
Second, an elderly beggar died from a sudden heart attack while security guards were escorting him out.
Third, a four-year-old girl. While her mother was on a massage chair playing with her phone, the girl climbed onto a nearby escalator handrail. As it ascended, she lost her footing and fell from the fourth floor to the basement lobby.
Fourth, the girl’s mother. Despite receiving substantial compensation from the mall, she suffered a severe mental breakdown. She often came alone to the mall’s basement floor to crouch and sob. After security repeatedly tried to dissuade her, she finally stopped coming. Three months later, she jumped from the same spot where her daughter had fallen.
Fifth, a male passerby was killed when strong winds blew an advertising board off the mall’s renovation hoarding.
According to the mission description, the Ghosts relentlessly pursuing us are likely one of the deceased from these unnatural deaths."
Li Ang had also obtained this information through the Information Broker. Scanning the other players’ body language, he noticed that no one was overly surprised, indicating they had all done their homework.
"It’s not necessarily just one Ghost," the Plague Doctor said. "If we consider the worst-case scenario, it’s highly possible all five Ghosts are patrolling the mall together."
"Hmm..." Ao Yong frowned. "That’s indeed a possibility."
Lost Airship snorted coldly and said, "Five Fierce Ghosts versus five players. The System also warned us to hide any sounds or lights. This means the System assumes the five of us can’t just team up from the start to fight and eliminate all the Ghosts. We have to use stealth."
A direct confrontation means death. That’s hardly good news.
Ao Yong took a deep breath. "Regardless, our mission is to search the mall, find the Talismans, and trace them onto the floors of each level."
He glanced around at his teammates, then took out five small tablet computers from his backpack and distributed them.
"These tablets each have software installed—it’s on the desktop—that can hack the mall’s surveillance system. Additionally, we can use a WeChat group for real-time contact to know each other’s locations and avoid getting too close, which would trigger a Ghost pursuit. And since Ghosts track sound and light, I suggest using the tablets only in silent mode when you’re sure it’s safe. Communicate via WeChat using only text."
So well-prepared, Li Ang thought, accepting the tablet from Ao Yong with some surprise. After checking it and finding no issues, he added the others as WeChat friends and created a group chat.
He didn’t actually plan to use the tablet Ao Yong provided. It was hard to know what people were truly thinking, especially players one had just met. He’d use his own phone once they split up.
Unfortunately, during missions, players couldn’t use the Killing Field Game System’s private chat feature; otherwise, none of this would be so complicated.
For the next few minutes, the five players familiarized themselves with the tablet’s surveillance software. Then, the clock struck midnight. Li Ang’s vision blurred. When he reopened his eyes, he found himself wearing a blue security uniform, holding a flashlight, a rubber baton hanging from his waist. He was standing in an eerily silent, dim hallway.
Five Ghosts, five players, six floors, six Talismans.
Truly... interesting...
Li Ang switched off his flashlight, crouched, and pressed himself against the wall.
