Chapter 91: Trying to create a strategy
Soon, no one was left eating in the training room; instead, they were reading and sharing information. The books they had been sent contained a wide range of information, but it was organized according to their different learning levels.
Elliot and, to some extent, Rich were way behind in this area because they hadn’t gone to an academy. They lacked in-depth knowledge of many subjects and had to read materials that were somewhat different from those of the others.
From basic topics in various subjects to support material for high-risk situations, they had to read extensively about survival and other relevant topics to learn about multiple subjects.
This was very beneficial for Elliot, as he had never studied these subjects when he was younger. Although he enjoyed reading, he didn’t have much material available.
After a few hours of intensive reading, the teachers and Steward returned to discuss strategies with those who had the most knowledge.
Elliot had to sit out during the first part of the conversation, as they were discussing topics that were confusing to him. Still, at a certain point, he was able to start connecting the dots as he always did and began to contribute information.
They would be fighting against an Academy with almost infinite resources. We are talking about the Elemental Academy, the main academy in the Kingdom of Arce. Although it is not an Academy with a Token to participate in the Main Championships, it is still a guild affiliated with the System, one of the most important in the territory.
The Academy has an enormous amount of talent and resources, and it has won the local Leveled Leagues several times, earning a substantial amount of resources each year.
Therefore, in terms of pure power and items, that Academy would be above Angelic Wave.
Only Jenna and Elliot had better items than those at the Academy. Still, the problem was that if they showed those weapons, they would become the target of all the powerful people in these parts, and even people from the capital could come looking for them, because those swords were too amazing for such weak people to use freely.
Furthermore, using those weapons would mean killing them, which would alert both of their targets.
While they were exchanging information and trying to devise a single strategy, they couldn’t make any progress.
Someone mentioned using their trump cards, but that would be problematic in the second round, especially since the tournament was a double-elimination format. Under such circumstances, eliminating the Elemental Academy right now would mean nothing.
In fact, if they used their trump cards, it would be counterproductive, because it would still eliminate everyone else, advancing at every step, and when it reached the final, it would be more than ready to face them.
That’s the problem with double-elimination tournaments: everyone has to figure out what strategies to use so as not to reveal everything, because reaching the final isn’t easy, and winning it’s twice as hard.
"No, we can’t use that strategy," Steward said suddenly.
Just as Elliot spoke: "The Elemental Academy would use important cards in this one, because what their Masters are looking for is to obtain the MVP, and what better way to achieve this than by eliminating the current MVP?"
Steward nodded in agreement. "We have to push them to the limit, right?"
Elliot nodded.
"If we fall into the trap of trying to coordinate with the best-coordinated team in the tournament, then we’ll lose. There’s nothing we can do about it. You saw it before, didn’t you? Between the seven of them, they can switch positions in record time, almost matching Jenna and me in that regard, but all seven of them can do it! If they do that to us while we’re trying to coordinate... we’ll lose for sure." Elliot declared, with all the pieces he needed to understand this, connected.
"Are you saying we should fight head-on?" Ren frowned and looked at the strategies. Among them was one that showed that fighting head-on was not a good idea.
But Elliot nodded.
"I think so," he replied. "We don’t have any strong points against them. We lose in power and coordination, but we still have several ways to win. We don’t need to show our trump cards, just show a few key ones." Elliot quickly formulated some new attack positions.
"Two in front, four meters apart, followed by one in the middle, and the rest a little behind them in an open formation, all facing forward. Jenna will be on the right side of whoever is in the middle, and I’ll be right behind her. That way, we’ll draw attention to the one who seems to be alone, but we’ll play on his loneliness so we can move quickly towards him and take out whoever falls into the net."
"If they fall, that would be perfect, but if they don’t, then the two in front will spread out a little and Jenna and someone else will move forward until there are four in a straight line and three behind. That way, we’ll attack head-on with an organized and disorganized attack at the same time, disorienting them."
Ren, Alan, Steward, and Andrew frowned.
Andrew was the first to speak.
"Are we trying not to show good coordination?" he asked.
"Yes," Elliot replied. "That’s the idea. Because we can’t organize ourselves better than they can, we’ll just choose a simple way to always support each other when attacking. The idea is that they don’t catch our trump cards together in a battle formation."
Andrew then nodded. "In the final phase, we would be showing weakness by creating flat formations with no capacity for surprise, but what they don’t expect is that we’re waiting for them to believe that." He nodded, understanding that.
"Haha, it’s good that you understand."
"That being the case." Andrew spoke once more before anyone else did. "Will I be in the center serving as bait?" he asked, but Elliot shook his head.
"No, your strength and hammer aren’t useful as bait. You should be either at the front or the back, in a position similar to mine. Whoever goes there must be..." Elliot looked at Rich. "You, Rich. You specialize in the art of assassination, and today you proved yourself to be a weak anchor. Thanks to that, they won’t be wary of you. If we put an assassin there, I’m sure they’ll think it’s a mistake because we’re limiting your movement, but when the other two move to the front, you’ll be left behind as usual."
Rich nodded slightly, seeming to be thinking.
"Will it work?" he asked.
Elliot shrugged. "If it doesn’t work, then there’s no way to beat them, I think."
Steward looked at Elliot for a moment, then nodded slightly.
"Okay, let’s do that. It’s a simple strategy, so we don’t need to practice it, which means you can focus on training for the rest of the day before bed," he replied.
When he agreed, both teachers nodded in agreement.
With that, the strategy was decided, or something to that effect.
-
That night, Elliot and Jenna were training with swords as usual in their personal training yard.
Their movements were fast, smooth, and skillful. They were both sweating from all the training, but they seemed to be having a lively conversation.
"Do you think we can win?" Jenna asked curiously.
Elliot sighed, without stopping his movements. "I don’t know. That Academy isn’t so simple. They might completely overwhelm us."
"I think so, too. But your strategy..."
"Don’t say it. It’s simple and effective for what we want, but I’m not sure if we can execute it well."
"Haha, after all, we only saw two variants out of so many that could be there."
"Yes, well, considering their strength, I think one of the two variants will occur, as they will feel confident against us."
"What if that’s not enough?" Jenna asked as she launched a powerful vertical attack that ended up pushing Elliot out of her reach.
Elliot quickly recovered and jumped towards her with agility, but his sword got stuck in Jenna’s, and she asked again.
"Are you going to use your class?" she asked.
Elliot attacked several more times, as if he were thinking about it, but in reality, he didn’t have much to think about.
"No," he replied firmly.
"Well... I can understand your thinking."
"Hahaha, that’s the good and bad thing about this format. At the beginning, you don’t feel that sense of crisis because you’re not going to be eliminated right away."
"Well, that has its funny side too."
"Yeah? Do you like the double elimination format?"
"Haha, of course. Have you seen that we can fix our mistakes as we go along? If we make a mistake, we get a chance to fix it. It’s a good format because you learn from your mistakes more quickly."
Elliot smiled and shrugged. "I guess you’re right about that, but the problem is the variables that show up in combat."
"Sigh." Jenna sighed. "I think the biggest variable this time is what the Academy plans to do with those seven. They’re so talented. Did they show them off to promote them? Or do they just want to show their supremacy?"
"Well, it’s not easy to know what the bigwigs are thinking. Maybe you can understand them now that you’re in the Master Rank like them."
"Hahaha, that’s a little joke, isn’t it?" Jenna complained, swinging her sword sharply at him. "Forget it, I’ll beat you first and then we’ll talk." She quickly lunged forward at full speed and began striking at key points, engaging in a fierce battle between the two that would last quite a while longer.
Elliot seemed to be getting closer and closer to the next stage, but he still couldn’t take that step.
