Chapter 65: Race Against Time (3)

Jenna nodded and, without thinking, targeted the door on the other side of the room...

Looking back, this was a room about 800 meters long, maybe more, which got smaller as it reached the end. It started with a width of 100 meters or more and ended at about 10 meters.

The area where the water channel ran, where part of the octopus was, was about 40 to 50 meters wide. Considering the octopus’s width was about 10 meters, they could pass through its body and cross to the other side.

But that wasn’t the problem.

Could they escape?

Right now, they were both about 600 or 700 meters from the door.

If they ran on a flat surface and pushed their bodies to the absolute limit, they could run at approximately 35 or 40 meters per second, but that was only on flat ground and at maximum power. It was not certain that they could do it with so much mental and physical exhaustion.

Even so, they would need approximately 20 seconds to reach the other side.

Could they do it?

Neither of them knew, but neither of them allowed doubt to get the better of them. They both ran at the maximum speed their bodies could manage at that moment, with a mission in mind: reaching that door.

Once again, their minds went blank, trying to distract themselves as little as possible.

In 10 seconds, they reached the middle of the room, where the octopus was slowly retreating, trying to catch up with them. Despite the shock it felt, the octopus wasn’t out of it. It could see them running, and it felt too angry, but at the same time, it felt dazed and unable to do much, so it couldn’t stop them from running across its body.

’Faster!’ Elliot roared inside his head. Jenna was more than 10 meters ahead of him, also running as fast as her body could, but he was in trouble.

And just as he stepped onto solid ground on the other side of the room, when there was nothing in front of him but a door a few hundred meters ahead, he felt his body suddenly slow down.

Suddenly, the energy that had been resisting the poison stopped working. Immediately, he felt mental exhaustion reaching its limit, and the two summons lost their ability to remain outside and returned to him.

Unfortunately, they did not return in the form of energy, so nothing in him increased except for the mental exhaustion that suddenly hit him, drastically slowing him down.

The octopus that was now behind him finally allowed its entire grotesque body to return to the channel where seawater was flowing, and it did so with a splash, sending poisonous water flying everywhere.

Elliot didn’t know. He clenched his teeth as hard as he could, bit his tongue, and tried to run faster, but a few seconds after...

"AGHHHHH!" His scream reverberated through the room, startling Jenna, who immediately turned around to see that Elliot had lost the ability to resist the poison.

He couldn’t stand the pain and ended up falling to the floor and rolling several meters.

"AGHH!"

In a way, this was a good thing for him, as it helped him avoid much of the poison that was coming his way, but at the same time, it was torture.

That poison, despite being diluted, quickly destroyed his skin and rapidly approached his flesh, and falling onto a rough floor like this caused the wounds to open even more, causing him even greater pain.

Despite that...

It was also a good thing.

Because when his wounds were rubbed against the ground, the poison remained there. His pain was terrible, but somehow it wasn’t as frightening because he was able to get rid of some of the poison.

And even though his body urged him to writhe, he kept his eyes fixed ahead. The pain throughout the back of his body did not make him lose sight of his path, and that door was right in front of him.

Just as he was about to stand up, his legs betrayed him and he fell forward again, losing precious time in a desperate situation.

’Shit!’ he groaned to himself, trying to force his body to get up. But his legs seemed to want to betray him, perhaps because that part hadn’t touched the ground, so the poison had managed to seep in better.

But as he struggled to stand up, he felt something pulling him and looked ahead.

It was Jenna, of course. Even though she needed to get to the other side to save herself, she wouldn’t leave him behind.

To begin with, her work at that time was almost non-existent in her mind. If she managed to survive this time, it would be more than three times she had done so thanks to Elliot.

Her mind prevented her from leaving him behind in such circumstances. For now, they were a team; letting each other die would be the same as calling death to their door.

That’s why she pulled him as hard as she could. "I’ll help you!"

But this slowed her down noticeably. In addition, Elliot’s legs were betraying him more and more, so they weren’t even running at a speed acceptable for an ordinary human, let alone for them.

Even so, being the good rich woman that she was, Jenna quickly pulled dozens of potions from her inventory. She sprinkled some on Elliot’s body and threw the rest at him.

"Swallow them, they’re the best in Agora!" she shouted.

Elliot suddenly found dozens of potions in his arms and forced himself to put several in his inventory so they wouldn’t fall out when he stumbled.

After swallowing the first one, he was surprised by its intense flavor.

’...High-level potions,’ he thought.

His poor mind wanted to betray him when he realized he was swallowing things that possibly cost more than $500,000 each.

’My God...’

He soon felt their effects. They were so effective that even those that were quickly expelled from his body were able to heal his various wounds, while at the same time counteracting the poison that was trying to destroy him.

But in his legs... That poison had already done its job.

It had reached the bone.
