Chapter 93: Sweet little heart

Lorenzo blinked, his senses snapping back. Ashley’s reactions baffled him. There were times he thought it would be hard to convince her to do certain things, but she’d agree without a fight. But this time, he suspected it was the thought of her daughter that made her so willing.

He grabbed his newest shirt—now his second favorite, thanks to Ashley agreeing to wear it.

She stepped out of the bathroom a moment later, looking shy and innocent in the oversized blue shirt.

Lorenzo tried not to stare too much as she walked past him and climbed into bed, wrapping herself completely in the duvet—from head to toe.

He shook his head, amused.

"Ashley?"

No response.

"You’re not planning to suffocate under there, are you?"

The duvet rustled, and a muffled whisper came through: "Maybe. And whatever you want to tell me better be worth it once I get off this bed."

He chuckled. "Yes ma’am."

He couldn’t help but wonder what she’d do if it wasn’t. She sounded like she might beat the life out of him. Still, he was happy she was back. Really happy.

A smile tugged at his lips as he returned to the work he’d abandoned to go find her.

He settled onto the couch with his laptop, working while keeping an eye on Ashley, still amused by her duvet-covered form. He expected her to peek out eventually, but instead, her soft snores started filling the room.

The urge to record her and tease her later was strong. But just as he pulled out his phone, it started ringing—like it had been waiting for that exact moment. Genevieve’s name flashed across the screen.

Lorenzo sighed. What outrageous demand did she have this time?

She only ever called when she needed bailing out—usually for something ridiculous, like funding her own personal fashion week or buying out a whole wig store.

Wait. She still had his credit card.

His brows pulled together. Something felt off.

He immediately answered. "Genie, what do you want?" His voice held a mix of amusement and wariness.

Her panic-stricken voice cut through the phone. "They’re attacking me, please come!" she cried.

He jumped from the couch and dashed to the door without a second thought. "Where are you? Send me your location!"

A message came in seconds later. It was the address of a fashion house on the outskirts of the city.

Lorenzo floored the accelerator, speeding through the streets like a thunderbolt. His mind raced with worst-case scenarios.

He screeched to a halt outside the building, barely registering how he parked before leaping out. His eyes scanned the modern entrance, searching for Genevieve.

And then he saw her—huddled in a corner, flanked by two security guards. Her usual bold, sassy demeanor was gone. She looked terrified.

"Genie!" he called, striding quickly toward her.

She turned. Their eyes met, and she rushed into his arms. Her wavy blue hair was disheveled, her eyes filled with tears.

As he hugged her, his blood boiled. Who dared to hurt his sister?

"Are you hurt anywhere?" he asked, scanning every bit of exposed skin. She shook her head, easing his worry.

"You’re safe now, okay?" he said, taking her hand as they headed towards his car. His face was tight with anger.

Once inside the car, Genevieve’s words spilled out in a frantic rush when Lorenzo asked what had happened.

"I finished my shoot and was waiting for an Uber... The black van came out of nowhere. I thought they just wanted to ask for directions. They called me ’homewrecker’s sister’... One of them slapped me while the others tried to drag me in... The security guards saved me..."

Rage surged through him. Christian’s doing—no doubt about it.

"Do you know any of the girls?" he asked, turning slightly to gently rub the cheek that had been slapped.

She shook her head, eyes still wet. He wiped the tears with his thumb.

"No. They took off when the security showed up. Is Christian Harrington behind this?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Lorenzo hesitated, unsure how much to say. But deep down, he couldn’t shake the certainty that Christian was involved.

"We’ll find out," he said, giving her a steady, reassuring look. "But don’t worry about it for now. I’ll kill him before he ever touches a single hair on your head again." He brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Does it still hurt?" he asked, thumb still resting against her cheek.

"No. Thank you for coming," she murmured.

"You’re my little sister. It’s my duty to protect you... always," he said firmly.

"Where’s your car? Why did you need an Uber?"

"It broke down yesterday. I was thinking of calling a repairer once I got some free time."

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

"I didn’t want to bother you. Besides, I don’t have to call you every time my car needs servicing. I’m 20 years old, remember? An adult."

He gave her a look that said fuck that. "You’ll always be my kid sister." He kissed her forehead.

"Would you like to replace the car?" he asked once they pulled onto the road.

Genevieve blinked. "Huh?"

"Do you want me to change your car or not?"

She smiled now. "My current one’s not old at all. It’s just two years," she reminded him.

"It’s not bad to have more than one... In case one’s down, like now."

"Yeah, true. Can you give me some time to think of the exact car I want?" she asked, excitement lighting up her face.

"You can take forever, little one—it’s your choice. Just don’t blame me if, by the time you finally decide, I’m already poor," Lorenzo joked.

Genevieve laughed, and the sound warmed him. He needed to get her home first, then head back to retrieve the CCTV footage and identify the girls involved.

No one harmed the people he cared about and got away with it.

He hoped to wrap everything up and return before Ashley woke up, possibly panicked by his absence. The thought of her, tucked cutely into his bed, brought a soft warmth to his chest. His smile widened instinctively—until Genevieve’s teasing voice snapped him back.

"Are you thinking about her?"

He shot her a glare, trying to keep a straight face. "What are you talking about?"

"You’re smiling because of Ashley, aren’t you?" she pressed. "I’m totally telling Mom her son’s gone soft."

She raised her hands and wiggled in her seat, pretending to dance.

His eyes narrowed. "You’re forgetting I’m your older brother—the one who just saved your butt from some wild animals."

She laughed again. "I already thanked you for that."

"If you snitch to Mom, I’ll shave your head in your sleep."

She gave him a mock glare. "Try it and I’ll sue you for abuse."

Lorenzo chuckled, relieved to see her returning to her usual self—talkative, sassy, and full of comebacks. "Looks like your smart mouth’s back. Unlike earlier, when you were crying, ’Yorenzo, chave me!’" he said, mimicking her voice with a grin.

"You’re so evil."

"Really? I should pay—what’s his name again? Javelin, or whatever you call him—"

Her glare sharpened, but he ignored it. She hated when he called her boyfriend that.

"I should pay him a friendly visit and remind him to stay away from my beloved sister. Otherwise, I’ll show him just how evil your brother can be. How about that?"

"Don’t even go near Javier," she warned. "You already scare him enough with that mean face of yours."

"If I scare him, then he’s not man enough for you," Lorenzo said coolly. "And tell him I’ll do more than glare if he ever thinks about breaking your sweet little heart."

Genevieve didn’t respond, but she knew he meant every word. What she didn’t know was just how much Lorenzo had already dug into the boy. He didn’t want to freak her out—but if Javier ever dared to hurt her, he wouldn’t hesitate to track him down. Even if the kid ran off to his hidden maternal village somewhere down south.

It wasn’t overprotectiveness—it was caution. She was his little sister. His only sister. And besides, he’d only done a small background check. Not like he’d threatened the kid.

Yet.

Just a little precaution. In case the boy ever messed up.

*******

After dropping Genevieve off and dealing with his dramatic mother, Lorenzo drove back to the office to request the CCTV footage. On the way, he pulled out his phone and sent one of his men a quick text.

"Speed it up. I want it trending everywhere by the end of tomorrow."

Christian thought he could play some silly games with him, even dragging his family into it? Lorenzo’s lips curled into a dark smile as he gripped the steering wheel tighter.

Time to see who would bleed first.
