Chapter 83: I want a lawyer
Chapter 83: I want a lawyer
As Lorenzo drove Ashley to the station, her mind was a total mess. She was struggling to process everything: Roseline, Christian’s lies, Lorenzo’s surprising past. It was too much, too fast. She felt lost, unsure who to trust or what to believe.
The silence in the car felt suffocating. She rubbed her elbow nervously, her thoughts spiraling. When Lorenzo glanced at her, she caught the flicker of pain and worry in his eyes—and quickly looked away, a flood of conflicting emotions at war in her chest.
Part of her wanted to speak–to apologize, to acknowledge not just the hurt her ex-husband’s stupid words might’ve caused, but her own reaction too. But another part of her was still struggling to come to terms with the new revelation, still reeling from the sting of his comeback about Christian using her.
Or maybe she did deserve it.
She risked another glance at him. Guilt twisted in her stomach. She had been too quick to judge him. Maybe she should’ve at least given him a chance to tell his side of the story.
But her fear had taken control. Fear of what his connection to drugs might mean—not just for him, but for her, for Vanessa.
She’d heard the horror stories of rivalry cartels clashing. The aftermath was always devastating; for them and their families.
She didn’t want to constantly look over her shoulders. Or worse, jeopardize her daughter’s safety again —when she was finally found.
What if he was even using drugs? The thought sent a chill through her. She blinked hard, forcing a slow, deep breath down her lungs.
Perhaps she was overthinking this.
But no matter how sweet Lorenzo had been since they reconnected—and how much he’d supported her—she still couldn’t trust him. How could she? It felt like she didn’t know him at all anymore. Eight years had passed. They weren’t the same teenagers who once fell in love under the stars.
Sometimes she wondered if he’d ever truly loved her. If he had, why had he left? And for so many years? Why hadn’t he said a single word about it since they met again?
And clearly, he didn’t trust her either. If he did, he would’ve told her about this, instead of letting her hear it from somewhere else.
But despite everything, she never imagined—not in her wildest dreams—that he would be involved in something like this. It felt as though the teenage boy she once knew had been replaced by a complete stranger.
And yet... here he was. By her side, supporting her despite her poor reaction. And that made her feel stupid, ashamed. Unworthy.
Clearly, not everything about him had changed. His kindness, even towards strangers was still there. It always had been. And it had always stirred something deep within her.
But again came the doubt. The voice in her head that whispered: What if it’s all just a mask? A mask to hide his true self? What if she was being fooled again?
She shut her eyes, forcing back tears—caught between the urge to apologize, the need to hear the full truth... or to forget it all and focus on finding her daughter.
The thoughts refused to slow down, crashing into each other like waves.
Her anger toward Christian rose to the pinnacle–sharp and consuming. He was behind it all. She wanted him to pay for everything he’d done, to beg for mercy and receive none.
His betrayal had torn her away from her daughter—the one light in her life. And now, he was trying to ruin her reputation too, playing the victim like he always did.
Christian had never been honest with her, and she’d stupidly ignored all the glaring red flags. She was still paying the price.
And now Lorenzo wasn’t being honest with her either.
His voice suddenly pierced through the chaos in her mind.
"We’re here."
Ashley opened her eyes, anxiety tightening her chest as they stepped out and walked into the police station. The harsh fluorescent lights made her squint. The air felt dense, suffocating.
She spotted Nicolas, who excused himself from a conversation with an officer and approached them.
"Miss Ashley. Lorenzo," he greeted, then led them to his office.
Once seated, Ashley went straight to what brought her. "Has Roseline said anything about my daughter?"
Nicolas’s expression darkened. "She’s still denying involvement. But we’re investigating, and..."
"I want to see her," she interrupted, her frustration boiling over.
Lorenzo glanced at her, concern flashing in his eyes. "Are you sure you’re ready?"
She nodded, resolute. "I need to hear it from her. I need to know what she knows."
Nicolas gave a brief nod. "Follow me."
They entered the well-lit interrogation room where Roseline sat cuffed, her hands resting on the metal table.
The moment she sighted Ashley, a flicker of unease crossed her face—but she quickly buried it behind a cold, calculated stare.
Ashley’s heart pounded, fury mixing with raw determination. This was the woman who had taken her child. How could she forget that face?
"You," she whispered, voice trembling with emotion.
Roseline’s gaze didn’t break, but her eyes betrayed a sliver of fear.
Nicolas’s firm voice cut through the silence. "These people are here to see you, Roseline. Do you recognize this woman?"
Roseline shifted in her seat, her eyes darting between Nicolas, Lorenzo, and Ashley.
Then she shook her head. "No. I don’t know her."
Ashley snapped. She walked over and slammed her palms on the table, making Roseline flinch.
"You liar!" she cried. "You stole my baby, and you still have the nerve to lie to my face?"
"I don’t know what..." Roseline started.
But Ashley lunged forward, grabbing her by the collar, causing the words to get stuck in her throat. She struggled to free herself despite her restraints.
Lorenzo rushed in, pulling Ashley back before Nicolas could intervene.
She tensed in his arms, fists clutching at his shirt, shaking with rage.
"I said I don’t know you or any daughter you’re talking about!" Roseline shouted. "I want a lawyer—and I’m filing a complaint! She just assaulted me!"
Ashley shot her a look of pure disbelief. "You think a lawyer’s going to save you?"
She struggled to free herself from Lorenzo’s hold, eyes locked on Roseline with blazing hatred.
