All eyes were fixed on the sketch the forensic officer was drawing from Roseline’s descriptions, but Ashley’s felt like she could bore a hole right through the computer screen. Her heart hammered hard against her ribs. No. This couldn’t be...
"Curly blonde hair," Roseline murmured again. "Brown eyes..."
As the image took shape, Ashley’s frown deepened, and Lorenzo’s did too.
By the time the drawing was almost finished, her throat had gone so dry she had to ask for water.
Lorenzo looked at her, worry tight on his face. "Do you want to step outside for some fresh air?"
She shook her head quickly. This was the truth she had searched for months. She wanted to see it through.
"Are you sure about these details?" Ashley asked Roseline, disbelief creeping into her voice.
Roseline nodded firmly. "I’m sure. She was with the man."
Nicolas turned to Ashley. "Does this look familiar to you?"
She blinked slowly, confused. "It looks a lot like Kayla Beckett."
"Her ex-husband’s fiancée," Lorenzo added quietly.
"That says a lot," Nicolas murmured. He called an officer to get information on Kayla Beckett.
But why would Kayla kidnap her daughter? Ashley wondered. Did Christian know? Had her little girl been with both of them all along?
She felt dizzy.
Just then, Lorenzo’s phone rang. He stepped outside to take the call. When he returned, his face was tight with worry.
Ashley rushed to him, her worry heightening. "What’s wrong?"
He pulled her to a corner and whispered urgently, "Can you stay here and continue with the investigation until I get back? I think he has Bryan."
He hated leaving her at such a critical moment, but that bastard had said he’d kill the boy if he didn’t show up.

"Please sir, please let me go. I’ll disappear forever. No one will find out, I promise," Madison begged, tears streaming down her face as Raphael smiled cruelly.
"Why didn’t you tell me my brother was abroad for months? And why did you stop the poison before then?"
A ginger-haired man appeared, standing in the corner with a gun. Madison’s throat went dry.
"Please, sir, I’m sorry," she sobbed, turning back to Raphael with pleading eyes. She had thought about telling him when they were planning to move her boss abroad, but she knew he might ask her to kill him immediately. She didn’t want more blood on her hands.
"I paid your mother’s hospital bills for years, put her in the best care. You had one job—one—and you couldn’t even do that," Raphael said, stepping close to her.
"Please forgive me. I got scared. I didn’t want to get caught," Madison whispered, trying to look at him as he circled her.
"I’ve long forgiven you, sweetheart," he said, brushing hair from her face—then gripping it hard enough to make her flinch. "That’s why I’m going to make your death quick."
Terror flashed in her eyes. Her head jerked forward as he roughly released her hair.
"Please, I’ll do anything. Just don’t kill me," she sobbed, throat burning.
She thought of her mother—how she used to call her "Didi" with so much love. She thought of happier times before the accident took her father, and the cancer diagnosis came. Tears spilled freely.
Who would care for her mother if she died? Who would protect her from this monster? How would she finish her treatment?
She regretted ever getting involved with Raphael, every desperate thing she’d done to save her mother’s life.
Raphael nodded to the man by the door. He came forward, handing him the gun.
Madison’s stomach twisted.
"Any message you want me to deliver to your mother, child?" Raphael asked, rubbing the gun’s tip.
"Please, you can’t kill me. The police might already be looking. Let me go, and I won’t say a word."
"Wrong answer," he said, striking her across the face with the gun.
Her head snapped back, pain exploding in her skull. She coughed, blood on her lips.
"Ready to try again? Or just forget about it," he said with a quick dismissive wave of his hand. "That sick woman will join you soon anyway."
"Please spare my mother," Madison whispered.
"And have her run to those hungry authorities... and maybe even my brother?" Raphael sneered, clicking his tongue.
Madison lifted her head, meeting his cold gaze. "My mother knows nothing. She won’t talk to anyone."
"I don’t believe you. Why else did you visit her if not to spill secrets?"
Madison swallowed hard. "Why did you want your brother dead so badly?" She needed to know why her boss was hated so much by his own sibling. Maybe it would ease the guilt eating her since his son, Jason, died.
A darker glint crossed Raphael’s eyes.
"That’s none of your business," he said, cocking the gun and aiming at her face.
Madison closed her eyes, bowing her head in defeat, heart pounding as she waited.
"But since you’re about to die, I could give you a summary." He pressed the gun to her forehead, and her blood turned ice. "My twin brother got everything—the best company, the prettier wife, the best life. But I’m going to take it all back. Including his lovely Michelle—with or without you."
Before Madison could react, two loud shots echoed. The bullets buried deep in her skull.
Her body jerked, blood splattering, staining Raphael’s face. Her eyes stayed wide, lifeless.
A cruel smile curved his lips as he took out a handkerchief and wiped his face and hands.
One last glance at Madison’s cold body, he turned and left.
"Take care of this," he said, handing the gun back to the man by the door.
He then rushed out, got into his car, and sped away from the secluded spot toward St. Louis hospital. He had to finish what he started—no loose ends.
At the hospital, he walked calmly into Madison’s mother’s ward, heading straight to room B12. He expected to find a frail woman asleep in bed. Instead, the room was empty. Sheets folded, IV unplugged.
Raphael’s stomach dropped, panic gripping him. "No... no, no." Someone had moved her. But who? And when?
