Chapter 108: The Angel’s Dilemma
Chapter 108: The Angel’s Dilemma
During the battle of the humans against the higher races, there were only two races that were not present. Angels and Nephilim... In fact, the latter had not shown their appearance ever since they appeared in the Trial yet. It vexed the angels. Supposedly, Nephilim should have long ceased in the Tower.
As much as they wanted to observe Faith, who they had been in contact with due to her background, they were anxiously searching for the Nephilim.
A four-winged angel holding a thick book, radiating a golden glow, faced his fellow four-winged angel with the similar book on his grasp and asked, "Joshua, how can we not still find that Nephilim? Also, I thought the Nephilim had been purged in the Tower three years ago?"
Joshua entered the Hellish Trial two years ago and shared the information with his fellow angels, who only knew about the ongoing-war against the nephilim race. They were joyful from his information, but, as soon as a year passed, he was punished when the Trial announced the participation of the Nephilim, bringing a wave of shock, even to the other higher races, who were aware of the great war.
Joshua was anxious as well, and he said with an angelic, manly tone, "Chayliel, even I don’t know why it is the case. Perhaps, a lost child of the Nephilim managed to escape by entering the Trial?"
Chayliel shook his head and sighed. "How long will you continue supporting that ridiculous idea Joshua? It might be possible, but do you think a single nephilim, as soon as our race declared victory, manage to survive for a year and even participate in the Trial? Surely, they are already plotting their revenge."
Joshua was silent, not knowing what to say. Another four-winged angel carrying the same book intervened. For some reason, their voices were heavenly and divine, pleasing to the ears.
"We will never know. That’s why the most important thing is to get rid of that nephilim. Since it has been hiding from us for over a year, it showed that it was alone and it could not fight against us, so it was trying to find the opportunity to take us all for once."
Chayliel snorted. "Don’t be delusional, Cahethal. There’s no way it will be able to get rid of us. We are under the protection of Razael, a six-winged angel, Cahethal. Six-winged! That is equivalent to the Overlord rank–hierarchy set by the Towers!"
Cahethal’s eyes lit up.
"Is the rumor true?"
Chayliel smugly nodded. "It is. Since when do angels lie? That is a mortal sin. Anyway, it came from the sentinels and templars, who had been guarding Razael during his ascension a week ago."
Cahethal couldn’t hide his excitement. "That means we have a higher chance of completing the Trial."
Chayliel nodded frantically. "That is for sure."
"By the way, are the ophanim’s back?"
The professions of the Angel races only consists of four, ophanim–equivalent to archer profession for humans, sentinels–the guardian of the angels, focusing on divine barriers or fortification, templars–the sword of the angels, responsible for divine judgment through force, and choir–equivalent to priest profession for humans, providing healing and support for the other profession.
Ophanims are also known as the Smiting Eye of the Heaven, carrying tasks similar to scouts in the human profession. They were supposed to observe Faith’s movements, but with the unexpected appearance of the Nephilim, they put their whole attention on it. After all, there were only two ophanims in the Hellish Trial.
Just as they were wondering about the ophanims, the choir simultaneously turned their heads and saw two four-winged angels flying towards them. Their faces were drained of color when they saw the dishevel state of the ophanims, seemingly suffering from the intense battle.
Their faces were burned and it was even sizzling. In addition, their light armor was being corroded by purple liquid and it seemed the ophanims could not get rid of it, only slowing its progress through light mana condensation.
Worst, one of the ophanim was flying a bit slow compared to the other, having the latter no choice but to carry her.
"T-They are injured!"
"Obviously! What are we waiting for? Provide aid! Heal!"
They simultaneously cast heal over a distance and the two ophanims were enveloped by light. The choir used their voice, singing, to constantly heal the ophanims. Their thick book was opened, flipping pages by itself, seemingly radiating intense glow as they sang the texts.
The ophanims were being healed, but cleansing the purple liquid seemed to be impossible, as they could only slow it down.
"Damn it! What is that poison?! Why is it so potent?"
"Stop cursing, you idiot!"
"Stop insulting me, then!"
They shut their mouths when they perceived the earth was trembling, intensifying as time passed by. With certainty, the ophanims were being followed by something massive, fearsome, and lethal to deal with. To spot their poor state conveyed they needed immediate assistance.
"Call Razael! Call the sentinels!"
Due to the constant war with the other higher races, Razael are the only remaining templars, with two other sentinels. However, due to his ascension, they make up for their lack of offensive power. Ophanims were a lethal offensive profession, too.
"No need to call for us," a masculine voice reverberated behind their back, and their eyes lit up.
They did not need to turn their heads as they did not want to lose their concentration either. They remained quiet as Razael with the sentinels appeared on their line of vision, staring at the ophanims. The six wings behind Razael confirmed the rumor, elating them.
Razael and the two sentinels wore a grave countenance, staring at the ophanims. The ophanims were greatly injured. Thankfully, the choir was a capable healer, for they only needed five minutes to completely heal the ophanims.
However, they were afraid that the psychological trauma dealt to the ophanims were serious, evident by their terrified expression. When they saw Razael and the two sentinels, their faces were not even hopeful, seemingly hesitating.
Razel stopped staring at them and focused his attention forward, the direction where the trembling originated.
He said in a solemn tone, "It seems that the snake is finally making its move. But, why is it targeting us?"
"It seems deliberate, Sir Razael. It seems it was only waiting for you to ascend to fight against you."
"Yes, it seems deliberate, but I want to know its intention of attacking us. I’m certain I have already warned the ophanims not to disturb that big snake."
The sentinels were silent, waiting for the ophanim’s answers.
As soon as the two ophanims arrived, they fell to their knees, panting. They struggled to tilt their heads upward and met Razael’s gaze.
"It wants to attack us, Sir Razael! We tried to compromise but we were instantly attacked. We almost died!"
Razael’s eyes flashed with cold glint. However, staring at the debilitated state of his allies, his heart ached and said in a soft tone, "Don’t worry, I will avenge you."
He then stared forward, catching a massive shadow covered by gargantuan trees. It easily managed to trample them due to its massive size.
Razael was actually unsure if they could manage to defeat the massive snake, even though he ascended to the six-winged angel rank.
Nevertheless, he must bring divine judgment to whoever hurt his allies.
