Chapter 87: “Are You Stupid?” – A Love Letter to Leo
In the quiet, softly lit private room of a restaurant, Micah hesitated before asking, "Big sister, how did you become this close to Leo? I mean, I don’t find fault with it or anything, it’s just a bit surprising..."
He glanced up from beneath his lashes, tone innocent but full of curiosity. He had to ask.
He needed to know what exactly connected the two.
Jacklin leaned back slightly, swirling the iced tea in her glass as she smiled gently. "Well... to tell you the truth, I was the one who recommended him to become a star..."
Micah blinked, caught off guard. That wasn’t the answer he expected.
Jacklin’s smile dimmed. "Back then, I was in my final year of high school. Still too naive and idealistic, not yet stepping into the working world. I kind of trusted my friend too much. Thought I was doing the right thing. And let Leo sign with Twilight Entertainment..."
Micah’s eyes widened. "What?! And he still answered your call?!" he blurted out.
He couldn’t help it. If he were in Leo’s shoes, he would have ghosted anyone remotely connected to that cursed company. Twilight entertainment was a walking scandal wrapped in a business suit.
Jacklin shook her head helplessly. "Well, he doesn’t know... Leo just thinks I’m some rich lady. But I was the one who made his road to the spotlight go smoothly... not just with the recommendation, but I even sponsored a few of his projects. Well, there were reasons I couldn’t go public with it."
Micah stared at Big sister. "Wow! You are such a good person!"
Jacklin let out a sharp laugh and waved her hand. "No, what good person! I had my own selfishness in it, too."
She leaned in with a mischievous smirk.
"I like watching the things I pick grow more beautifully than others..."
"Ahh! Big sister! I never would have guessed that you have such a twisted personality!" Micah cupped his cheeks in mock horror.
"What?! Don’t tell me you don’t?! It’s human nature!" Jacklin retorted.
"Fine. Fine. You are not a good person." Micah grinned. He chewed a piece of crispy shrimp and asked more seriously.
"But that still doesn’t explain why our Leo is so close to you." Micah pressed the issue harder.
He wanted to make sure there was no relation other than a fan and an idol between them.
"After all these years of stanning him, if he is not close with me, then with whom?! Leo is a warm person once you get to know him."
Micah rolled his eyes inwardly. Yeah, right. He was more like a block of wood in the novel, totally apathetic. Well, now that that awful incident hadn’t happened to him, he might be a bit better than in the novel. But he couldn’t relate the word ’warm’ to Leo at all.
Micah nodded and did not continue the topic.
That was enough for now.
Jacklin picked up her drink again. "So, what have you been up to lately?"
"I am moving into the dorm soon," Micah replied casually.
Jacklin’s eyes lit up. "Oh! What a coincidence! My cousin is moving in, too. But he has been whining nonstop. Hopefully, tomorrow I can get a break from his nagging!" Jacklin grinned. "You are at QC Uni, right?!"
Micah stiffened. Crap. Only QC Uni had that ridiculous mandatory dorm policy.
The other two universities in Isatis City were really lax in that regard. He had completely forgotten. He nodded anyway, smoothing his expression.
Jacklin caught the slight pause and tilted her head. "Mind if I ask your major? Or is it too nosy of me?"
"Well, I’d prefer to keep that private. You know, ever since that cosplay event, I’ve had some scary stalkers." Micah lied without batting an eye.
Jacklin gasped while inwardly cursing that damn stalker for hindering their search for Asena. "Oh god, I’m so sorry, that sounds awful. Okay. No more questions. But promise me you won’t ghost me, alright?"
Micah smiled sweetly and agreed.
The rest of the lunch passed in a blur. Finally, it was time for them to meet Leo McKay.
"Where are we going?" Micah asked as he followed her out of the restaurant.
Jacklin gestured toward the sleek black car parked out front. "Oh, Leo doesn’t like to go out. So, we are going to his rented place he uses sometimes."
Micah scoffed inwardly. The man had such high standards, ordering people around.
The drive through the entertainment district was smooth, but Micah’s eyes sharpened as they passed the towering glass building of The Twilight Company. A crowd had gathered outside.
"What’s going on??!" Micah asked, leaning forward.
"They couldn’t suppress the news on time, so now many people are protesting against the immoral conduct of their staff. I heard some came forward to testify." Jacklin said.
"Are you sure it was spontaneous? Not, say, a cool big sister pulling strings behind the scenes?!" Micah raised an eyebrow.
Jacklin just laughed.
After a few minutes, they arrived in front of a modest modern apartment complex. Jacklin led the two up to the fourth floor and rang the bell.
The door opened, revealing Leo in a simple shirt and comfy pants. His expression was rosy, not at all like someone hiding at home from paparazzi.
"Hi, thanks for coming." Leo flashed a warm smile.
Micah’s eyelid twitched. He had totally forgotten just how charming Leo’s smile could be.
"It’s good to see you!" Jacklin smiled back.
They entered the apartment and sat down on a couch.
"I asked you to come... Well, how to say it, I want to terminate my contract with Twilight. But there is a problem..." Leo said hesitantly.
Micah stared at him. What the hell? Why was he behaving like a shy boy?! Just spill the beans.
"What is it? I promise you I will help you however I can." Jacklin replied.
Leo exhaled, running a hand through his black hair. "Well, it’s about my contract. When I debuted, they kinda tricked me into signing a long-term one."
"How long?!" Jacklin asked.
"Twenty years.."
"What?!" Micah exclaimed, his voice high-pitched. He shot to his feet in disbelief, gaping at Leo.
"Are you stupid? How could you sign that?" Micah pointed at him.
After busting his ass all night keeping him out of scandal hell, the guy had the nerve to casually dropped the bomb that he had been tied to a twenty-year contract! How on earth in the novel, he had terminated it?!
There was an awkward silence in the room. Jacklin’s mouth parted, and Leo blinked, a little dazed.
