Chapter 77: Girlfriend Stans Enemy, Boyfriend Cries in Top Lane
[All] KillerKitten: We found DarkVyne!
[All] PlainPrivillage: Where?
[All] KillerKitten: My friend has ended up on his opposing team!!
[Red] PoisonIvy: It’s me! Me! He is with FrostbiteAshe again!
[All] SplatterDemons: Damn! Lucky bitch!
[All] EasySweep: Come on! Accept our friend request, big shot!
[Red] DiabolicDestroyers: What’s this fuss? I will show you all how weak he is!
[All] NinjaInPajamas: Haha! You are funny! First, reach Diamond rank, then taunt here!
[All] PVPMaster: Oh, I know him! He is vice-captain of SilverBlade Legion!
Micah hunched in his chair, squinting at the game map while slurping hot chili noodles. The steam from the hot cup fogged his glasses slightly. He adjusted them with one hand, clicking across the screen with the other, trying to maintain control of the bot lane.
Out of the corner of his eye, a sudden barrage of flashing chat messages caught his attention.
He froze mid-chew.
"Fuck!"
A chunk of noodle went down the wrong pipe, and he leaned forward in a fit of coughing. His hand slammed into the keyboards, jolting his champion into the bizarre range.
"Micah?" Darcy’s voice was filled with concern.
Micah wheezed and raised a hand, blinking tears from his eyes. "C-Chili. Went wrong. Not dying. Just spicy..."
Darcy reached out instinctively and patted his back. "I told you not to gulp it like that. It became spicier with every passing second."
Micah waved it off and quickly tossed the noodle cup aside, refocusing on the screen. His gaze darted to the chat log. His pulse raced.
Vice-captain of SilverBlade Legion?
What the hell?!
His eyes snapped to the enemy team’s ID tags. Two of them glowed in red.
DiabolicDestroyers and PoisonIvy.
The names didn’t ring a bell.
Even though he had tried to remember every detail of the novel, he still couldn’t memorise the side characters’ ID games. At most, he knew Archie’s ID (which was ShadowBishop).
But all the lesser-known members? Blanked.
How could they be facing members of Archie’s team?! What were the odds?!
Yeah, Darcy’s rank was high, but they had never been matched with a professional player before! If they had, Micah easily would have recognised them, because the pro playstyle was too prominent and deadly! It was only a matter of time before anyone realised it. So he had let his guard down, thinking they would be safe in Flex Queue.
Winning and losing was not the issue here. The real problem was Archie. What if he noticed Darcy, or correctly, DarkVyne? What worried Micah was that Archie would be set on befriending them or, worse, stalk Darcy after hearing about how god-level DarkVyne played the game.
Micah rubbed his forehead in distress.
******
Meanwhile, far from the internet cafe, a training room lit by RGB panels hummed with tension. Inside, Zian ( DiabolicDestroyer) gritted his teeth so hard his jaw ticked. He leaned forward in his chair, gripping the edge of the desk tightly, suppressing his annoyance.
He just wanted a casual game, something light, fun, and romantic with his girlfriend, Lulu. They had been going out for a week. Just one week! And what did he get?
DarkVyne!
If he knew this would happen, he would have been queueing in the Solo/Duo match! Even if their ranking would be affected, it was so much better than this!
What was his luck to be facing DarkVyne and FrostbiteAshe?
He had tried to contact them, messaging them every day for the past week, only to be ignored. Archie had chewed his ear off from nagging and asking for updates every five hours.
He had even begged Lulu to ask her friend, guiding her to bribe her friend with snacks, game credits, and whatever he could think of. But they stayed stubbornly tight-lipped. Their dodging questions were so firm and deliberate it started to make him suspicious. What were they hiding?
After days of dead ends and telling everyone it was helpless, that DarkVyne was a ghost, unreachable, those two suddenly showed up in front of him, casually queuing into his match like it was any other day.
The worst part was his girlfriend, who was so excited she was practically jumping up and down, giggling like she had just met a K-pop idol.
Hey! He was the boyfriend, okay?
Why was she shouting in a chat group about another guy?!
"Ah! I can’t believe it! I’m texting all my friends! Look, Look, I got a screenshot of him!" Lulu squealed, bouncing in her seat. Her hair bobbed in its loose bun, fringe sticking slightly to her forehead under the headset.
Zian’s eye twitched.
"Can we maybe focus?" he hissed, trying not to sound like a jealous jerk. "You don’t want to lose to that trash support, FrostbiteAshe, do you, honey?!"
Lulu, hearing his words, straightened her back. "Yeah! Captain said we need to recruit DarkVyne to our team! I should show him how capable I am!"
Zian nearly groaned aloud. That wasn’t the point! All he wanted was a cute little date match!
He slammed his keys with fury, sending his champion charging at the minions like a man on a mission. Each attack was a small act of vengeance, clearing the lane while he imagined it was DarkVyne under his blade. As a top laner, Zian thrived in the chaos up front, diving into fights, flanking enemies, and setting traps. He was right in the middle of a killing streak, eyes blazing, when the door to the training room slid open and Archie strolled in. Zian cursed.
"Captain!"Lulu beamed. "Perfect timing! Look at the screen! It’s DarkVyne!"
Archie, tall and composed in his black joggers and hoodie, raised an eyebrow.
His arrival was purely accidental, having forgotten his Bluetooth, he had just come here to fetch it.
Archie leaned in, resting one hand on the back of Zian’s chair and the other on his monitor. His eyes scanned the usernames, locking on DarkVyne. He smirked.
"Zian! You finally found him!" he said with dry amusement.
Zian flinched. "Total coincidence! I’ve been ghosted all week, remember?" he mumbled.
Archie paused. "You mean he didn’t reply at all?"
Zian nodded. "Umm, even right now in the chat group, both of them are silent."
Lulu tilted her head. "Maybe they had turned off it and couldn’t see our chat?!"
Archie’s brow furrowed. "Get up! I’m playing," he said in a firm voice.
Zian eyes widened. "Wait! For real?!"
"Yes!" Archie said. "This is a rare opportunity. I can gauge his skills. And if DarkVyne is really as good as I think, I will also know if he is fit for our team or not."
"But I wanted to play games with my girlfriend!" Zian’s protest died down after noticing Archie’s cold face.
"Up."
Zian huffed but stood up, sliding out of the chair. Even the quality time gaming with his girlfriend had been denied! He mentally cursed every ancestor of DarkVyne.
Archie took the seat and adjusted the headset. He didn’t say another word. His hands found the keyboard efficiently, already assessing the land layout and item builds.
