Chapter 56: Dorm Dread, Car Debt, and Dead Chats

During the rest of the week, Micah began sorting through his belongings, carefully choosing what to bring to the dorms.

His bedroom, normally tidy and clean, had been reduced to half-organised chaos of open drawers, scattered clothes, and half-filled suitcases. He sat cross-legged on the floor, a sweatshirt dropped over one knee, another gripped loosely in his hands as he debated which one was better for staying low-key at university.

Even though he was a fashion design major, he didn’t want to be in the spotlight. Especially before the truth was revealed.

Micah didn’t like the nanny or anyone else to touch his belongings. It wasn’t because he had OCD or something, it was just simple. Being a fashion enthusiast, every spot in his room was filled with clothes and accessories, each in its place. If someone misplaced them, it would take forever to find them. After repeated incidents in which Micah lost his temper, Elina forbade the staff from going into his room. Fortunately, he wasn’t a sloppy or untidy person, otherwise, Elina would never have allowed him this kind of leeway.

QC University had a strict rule for first-year students. They had to live in on-campus dorms for the first six months. No exceptions, not even for students with powerful families.

That rule was really a pain in the ass.

Micah sighed and sat back, resting his head against the edge of the bed.

He really did wish he could have moved to one of Ramsy’s apartments near the university. But he didn’t want to take a leave for the first semester. He needed to be on campus to keep an eye on that Esport captain, to stop him from getting close to Darcy.

Even if their majors were completely different, Darcy in the engineering department, and Archie in the school of Information Technology, there was still a chance that they would share a few foundational courses. After all, that captain had missed many classes to participate in the Esports competition and training. He would probably end up in some catch-up classes with the freshmen.

Thinking about the possibility, Micah’s expression darkened.

Micah folded a hoodie a little too aggressively.

"Well, I just look out for him from afar..." he mumbled, trying to convince himself.

He couldn’t bring himself to meet Darcy after that shameful crying.

He had not replied to Darcy’s messages at all since Monday night. At first, there had been a barrage of concerned texts but as days passed and Micah gave no responses, they grew fewer.

Micah paused mid-fold, his fingers curling into the soft fabric. A range of feelings from guilt to shame filled his mind.

He sighed and stood up. To distract himself, Micah checked his WeChat again. After Aidan Wilson, aka RiverBrigde, had accepted his friend request, there hadn’t been any actions.

The silence was maddening.

Micah did not know if Aidan had believed his warning or not. He chewed his lower lip. He hovered over the message box, fingers twitching to send something, anything. A sticker? A dumb emoji? Maybe just a hi?! But he hesitated.

According to the novel, Aidan disliked clingy chatty types the most. If he pushed too hard, he might get blocked instead.

The Shoele project bidding was coming up this Friday.

Micah had no idea why that person had betrayed Aidan, but the author had hinted that after this incident, Aidan’s trust issue had shot up into the sky.

Consequently, he confined Darcy multiple times in a dark room after his repeated attempts to escape. All because of his trust issue and controlling behaviour.

Anyway, this project had fallen into Aidan’s hands after his own mother had recommended it for bidding, claiming Aidan could secure his footing in the new energy sector.

However, behind the scenes, his mother had sided with one of Aidan’s half-sisters. Her price? A marriage contract for her nephew.

Aidan had believed her and invested most of his assets into the project, which was a trap, a way to embezzle money out of the country.

How did the mother know? It was simple. That project was related to her maternal family.

In the end, his mother sold her own son for her family’s prosperity and chose her nephew over Aidan.

Micah did not pity Aidan one bit. What Aidan had done to Darcy in the novel was unforgivable.

He just wanted to prevent this incident, hoping that Aidan’s future crazy acts would mellow down.

But that WeChat account was dead. There were no moments, no messages. Micah felt anxious. What if Aidan did not listen to his advice? Unfortunately, he did not have any evidence to send to him.

He paced around the room, thinking about a way to prove his claim, but it was futile.

He stopped when his phone lit up.

AAA: I got the quote for the car.

Attached was a picture of a bill.

Micah squinted at the total. The amount was tricky. It wasn’t astronomical, but it wasn’t pocket change either. Transforming that amount without a name attached was impossible.

He flopped onto his desk chair, spinning lazily as he weighed his options.

He was tempted to forget about the whole thing and upset the apple cart! But his damn conscience wouldn’t let him be the bad guy.

He pondered and decided to use cash. It wasn’t that he was chickening out, no, he did not want this arrogant man to find out about the Ramsy family. He feared that he would latch on to him like a crazy fan, not letting him go. Especially after the little taunt they had.

He could totally see it: after knowing he was the heir to the Ramsy family, this man, Alex Ford, would demand more money or spread rumours about him. Either way, this was the last thing he needed right now.

RogueOverlord: okay. I will give it to you personally. Can you make it this Friday?

Micah had planned the whole Friday. He would tell his family he was going on a trip with his classmates, then head to an average hotel to change clothes.

At first, he thought he could use one of Ramsy’s properties for his base, but he feared someone would spread rumours that a girl had gone to meet him in that place multiple times. And his family would demand him to bring his girlfriend and introduce her to them. That would be an impossible feat.

AAA: personally? You would show up? Aren’t you scared I’ll do something to you?!

RogueOverlord: are you intimidating a child? In broad daylight, what could you do? We are not in a lawless society.

AAA: Fine, we’ll see! Come to the Royal Hotel at 11 am!

Micah blinked. Yesterday, LioNessQueen sent the address for the meet-up. It was the same hotel. What was with this coincidence?!

At that time Micah had not paid attention to it, but now... He searched for the news about the Royal Hotel. It was an international hotel, not affiliated with any domestic powerhouse. And it was a famous and popular one. He exhaled in relief. Just a coincidence. Anyway, it was in his favour.

RogueOverlord: Okay. See you there.

With that, Micah closed the chat and clicked back to RiverBridge in annoyance.

"Why aren’t you curious at all?!"

With Aidan’s notoriously paranoid and obsessive personality, Micah had expected at least a reaction. Even just a "Who are you really?" but nope. Nothing. Just blank silence.

"Stupid, unreliable novel!" he muttered.

Elsewhere, in an office, Aidan Wilson stared at the chat window.

Then he reached for the phone on his desk and pressed a button.

"Yes, boss?" Shirley’s voice was heard through the line.

"Clear my schedule Friday morning," Aidan said, eyes locked on the screen.

There was a pause.

"But Sir, Friday is the Shoele project bidding. And you also have a meeting with La Riviere CEO in the morning ..."

"Do what I said! As a last resort, I’ll send you instead!"

Aidan barked, cutting her off.

He hung up before she could protest, then leaned back in his chair.

He ran a hand through his hair and huffed.

He knew his behaviour toward this boy was problematic. He should prioritize the bidding. He had already eliminated half the minor competitors with backdoor deals and subtle sabotage. The real threat was the La Rivière company. He had a meeting set to find out their intentions. Objectively, he knew this deal was worth billions.

And yet... A suffocating feeling pressed in his chest, knowing a brat had outsmarted him.

His competitive streak had been fully awakened. And he wasn’t about to let some rascal boy laugh at him. He was confident in acquiring the bidding after his mother told him inside information.

Anyway, the bidding was in the afternoon. And the possibility of La Rivière company agreeing to exchange some benefits before the bidding began was really low.

He had to get that brat, no matter what it cost!
