Chapter 50: Get In the Car, Or Else

Arriving at the parking lot, away from the campus’s bustling noises, the afternoon sun stretched long shadows across the concrete. Micah pulled out his mobile phone, thumbed over the screen, and, with a soft beep, unlocked the car. The side mirrors twitched out as the car powered on.

"This is like it was tailor-made for me... otherwise, Mum would never have lent me her keys..." he muttered under his breath, pressing the start button with a devilish smile. His eyes darted to Darcy, but the other boy was standing outside the car, brows furrowed in deep thought.

Micah rolled the window down. "What’s wrong?? Have you forgotten something?"

Darcy blinked. "I really think I have troubled you enough. I’ll just take the bus."

"Get in the car, or I’ll leak your info on the League forum as DarkVyne. You wouldn’t want that, would you?" Micah threatened, his voice full of dominance.

Darcy hesitated for a split second before letting out a sigh and getting in the car.

"So, where am I headed?!" Micah turned his head.

Darcy pulled out his phone, tapping through his GPS. "Here," he said, tilting the screen toward Micah. "It is a well-known pharmacy. They specialise in rare medications."

Micah leaned closer to read, squinting at the screen.

Darcy flinched the moment a minty scent hit his face. Micah’s snow-white hair danced in front of his eyes. He shifted in his seat uncomfortably and reached out, turning the air conditioner vent toward his face.

Micah’s attention was all on the phone. The moment his eyes landed on the SAFA logo, his smile faltered. His gaze darkened for a second before he composed himself.

Tsk. Silas Durant. He bet that manipulative doctor had not revealed to Darcy that SAFA was their family business.

Silas was probably using the connection to exploit him, pushing rare medicines, hiking up prices, and cornering him into gratitude.

Just the thought made Micah’s fingers tighten around the steering wheel in repulsion.

He nodded stiffly. "Got it."

The car slid into motion, and they rolled out of the lot. Micah kept his eyes on the road, but his thoughts were all over the place.

He needed to find a way to get between Darcy and Silas without making it obvious. If he played wrong, Darcy would lose his trust in him. Clearly, the other person was the reliable doctor in Darcy’s eyes.

Meanwhile, Darcy kept glancing sideways, his dark eyes flickering to Micah’s profile. The line of his jaw, the black-framed handle adoring his pierced ear, and even the occasional rolling down of his Adam’s apple.

Why? Why was Micah doing all this?

Why was he so kind to him?!

They had only known each other for what, seven days?! How many times they had met each other? Aside from the first coincidental meeting, this was the third time. Yet every time, Micah had gone out of his way, offering rides, paying for meals, and showing up with this earnest need to help.

He was putting too much attention on him, not on Nora. If Micah were only doing it out of concern for Nora, the girl he had rescued, Darcy would have understood.

He could reason that it was just a psychological reaction, like a gentle mother, after breastfeeding a stranger’s child, beginning to think of the baby as her own.

But he had sensed Micah’s focus was on him more than on Nora.

And it confused the hell out of him.

Micah’s eyes were too clear and held no impure thoughts. He had assumed maybe Micah formed a sympathetic sentiment toward him. Not pity. More offering a helping hand to loved ones. But It didn’t feel right either.

Why was he going to this length to be with him?

Darcy leaned back in the seat and glanced at Micah. His fingers twitched slightly, hovering near Micah’s neck for a moment. He was tempted to smooth out the furrowed crease between his brows, but then he dropped it. That was definitely out of line and improper.

Micah was too focused to notice the hand.

Darcy shook his head to himself, sighing in relief that Micah missed it. He couldn’t afford this kind of confusion. Really, the fluctuation in his emotions toward Micah was alarming.

He kept up the persona of a cheerful, optimistic boy in front of others, but deep down, after many ups and downs in his eighteen years of life, most of his feelings had gone numb. Nothing could truly stir him, let alone provoke pointless anger or frustration in him.

Could you blame him? Losing his father at the age of thirteen, and shouldering the care of a younger sister and a sick mother, how could he be carefree like this young master? Right?

He wasn’t jealous, per se, but he did wish for a normal life. And when he hung out with Micah, he could breathe. He could see himself as just a normal teenager. This feeling...it was all brought out by Micah.

"You have arrived at your destination. Your destination is on your right." the GPS mechanic’s voice broke the silence in the car.

Micah eased to a stop but didn’t move to get out right away. He just stared at the building, his face unreadable.

He exhaled, his next move undecided.

Then he reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a cap and dark sunglasses, slipping them on with practised ease.

"What are you doing??" Darcy asked.

Micah paused in mid-motion, then cleared his throat. "I once fought with someone here before."

"Huh?" Darcy said. "You didn’t even know the way to this place, constantly checking the GPS. Do you know how many times you turned in the wrong direction?"

Micah bit his lip. Busted. "I am not just good with directions!"

"Yeah, and every time you found my neighbourhood just fine?"

"Okay, okay," he muttered, pulling the cap lower. "I care about you, alright? What if someone inside recognised me? I am the heir to the Ramsy family. They will think you are loaded and spike the price just to bleed you dry." Micah said seriously.

"Do you even believe what you are saying?!" Darcy stared at him, deadpan.

"Please, don’t dig into this. I’m more comfortable wearing them." Micah threw the words out with slight annoyance.

His few brain cells could not come up with a plausible reason.

Darcy chuckled. "Fine. Let’s go."

Micah sighed in relief and followed him inside the pharmacy.
