Chapter 47: Archie’s First Miss

Micah stood frozen, rooted to the spot in the middle of the bustling university main gate. All the noises faded into a soft buzz as he stared up in a daze.

A tall young man, board-shouldered, lean, and towering at 190 cm, brushed past him, and Micah accidentally bumped into his shoulder.

The stranger turned slightly, casting a glance downward.

Their eyes didn’t meet.

Micah mumbled an apology absentmindedly.

Instead, the tall man’s gaze lingered on Micah, his brow furrowed in mild curiosity.

The boy had silver-white hair and delicate, porcelain-like skin. He wore a pair of sleek black glasses, their clean frame highlighted the paleness of his skin and the light freckles across the bridge of his nose.

The boy was staring straight ahead. He didn’t even glance at him.

He found it fascinating. He had never been overlooked like that before.

The man had glossy hazelnut hair, lush and wavy, and his eyes, green with specks of amber, were framed by long lashes. His jawline was clean-cut, sharp enough to draw blood. His immense height, extraordinary handsomeness, and the way he carried himself made him the focus of others wherever he went.

But this boy was staring at something else. The man tilted his head slightly as though trying to get a better look beyond the boy’s shoulder. He followed his gaze, but before he could see what or who was so fascinating for the boy to ignore him, his friend called him.

"Hey, Archie! What are you doing?? Come on, let’s go."

Zian, his friend and teammate, said.

Archie Norris, yes, that was his name, tore his gaze away and walked toward Zian, who stood a few meters away, arms crossed and eyes wide in mock annoyance.

"Honestly man, I was telling you about something important, but you just dismissed me! What? Did you spot a beauty? No way, you sold your friend out to just gawk at some random hot stuff?!"

He pointed a finger at Archie, accusingly.

"You talk too much," Archie replied coolly, though his eyes flicked back over his shoulder.

The boy with silver hair had vanished. The soot where he stood moments ago was now empty, swallowed by the crowd.

Archie frowned.

It wasn’t that he was unused to attention, far from it. With his height, sculpted frame and effortlessly handsome features, he drew eye wherever he went. Fans, classmates, even professors. His quiet demeanour and cold aura only added to the mystery. People followed his matches, messaged his social media, and watched his online gaming like crazy. He wasn’t used to being overlooked.

And yet the silver-haired boy hadn’t even blinked in his direction.

Archie’d brow twitched as a strange, fleeting sense of curiosity filled his chest.

"Anyway," Zian continued, his voice cheerful, completely unaware of his friend’s distracted mood, "I finally got myself a girlfriend."

Archie turned and looked at him, deadpan.

"What’s to be happy about?"

Zian threw his hands in the air.

"Seriously! Listen when other people speak! I said Lulu agreed to date me! Do you know how long I have been trying?"

Archie groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose with two fingers.

"What? Have you lost your mind? Ugh. I finally found a decent support, and you had to go and mess it up."

"What did I do wrong?" Zian said.

Archie shot him a look.

"Your dating record speaks for itself. What happened to the last one? Weren’t you with her for, what, two months before she dumped you!"

Zian scoffed. "Hey, that was not my fault! I didn’t know she was allergic to seafood."

Archie crossed his arms, unimpressed.

"And the one before her? Or the one before that? I don’t care how you messed up your relationships, I care about how I keep losing team members every time you get dumped. I wouldn’t be this upset if they demanded you leave the team, but no, they all disappear after breaking up with you!"

"Thanks, man! Real supportive!" Zian said.

"When have I ever messed up? I legally and respectfully pursue relationships. Honestly, I am your top lane! We have been playing together since we were kids! How could you say that?!"

"Yeah? I would be happier if you stopped dating within the team."

Archie muttered, shaking his head.

"Anyway, do you think Dean Lee will approve our leave of absence?"

Zian shifted the subject.

"Why wouldn’t he?" Archie shrugged. " You know how much attention we’ve brought to his department?"

Zian winced. "Yeah, but he is a stubborn old man..."

Arriving at the dean’s office, the two knocked.

"Come in," A gruff voice answered.

Inside, Dean Lee looked up from a pile of documents. His spectacles sat low on his nose, and a frown tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Dean Lee, good morning," Zian said, smiling a bit too brightly.

"What’s the honour, gentlemen?" Dean Lee asked, his voice filled with scepticism.

"It’s about our LOA... for attending the closed-door training camp before our upcoming competition..." Zian began.

"Yeah, yeah, I’m aware. But unfortunately, I could not approve a full year. The most I can offer is six months."

"Why? It’s because..." Zian’s face fell.

Dean Lee held up his hand. "Stop. I reviewed your schedule. If you take a year now, you will lose the option to apply again before graduation. I assume you are planning to participate in the world competition two years later, right?"

"Yes, that’s the plan." Archie nodded.

"Then finish this semester, you’ll still have enough time for your closed-door training." Dean Lee said.

The two students nodded and left the room.

Once outside, Zian let out a groan.

"Damn it, that old geezer! Couldn’t he just turn a blind eye this once?"

Archie didn’t answer. His fists clenched at his sides, the leather strap of his backpack tightening under the pressure. He knew the reason behind the dean’s decision. It wasn’t just about policy. Their team had lost recently to a new uprising squad. And with that loss came questions, and doubts.

The dean probably saw them as a sinking ship.

Archie’s jaw tightened. He refused to be written off that easily. He would make it to the top 5 this year! No matter what.

His team was young and did not have many sponsors. But the potential was there. He needed to recruit more players.

"Did you look into what I asked?" Archie asked, voice sharp.

"Yeah, but there is not much out there. Most good ones are contracted already from a young age. The rest either want to make money off streaming or they are, well, old."

Archie’s lips pressed in a thin line. "Nobody?"

"Well, one caught my eye, but he is a mystery. No team. No appearances. Doesn’t answer anyone." Zian said.

"Who is it?"

"DarkVyne. You know the legend who jumped from silver to diamond rank in a month."

"Oh, him..." Archie paused and fell into thought.

"I thought he disappeared..,"

"So did I. But Lulu said her friend saw a screenshot of DarkVyne playing again, and said he joined a random match."

Archie narrowed his eyes. "Oh, really. Can you find out who else was in that match? Maybe we get lucky and someone knows him."

"I am already on it," Zian said, pulling out his phone.

Archie didn’t say anything, but his mind was already racing. DarkVyne... that name hadn’t been mentioned in months. If he was back if they could find him...
