Chapter 44: Family Drama, Served Sunny Side Up

The warm scent of toasted bread, fried eggs, and crispy bacon filled the kitchen as sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Ramsy estate. Micah sat on the long marble counter, dressed in a grey t-shirt and baggy shorts, quietly eating the breakfast his mother had lovingly prepared.

It was Sunday, a family day in the Ramsy household, and by tradition, most of the staff and the live-in nanny were given the day off, leaving the kitchen unusually quiet and intimate.

Elina stood near the stove, watching her son with softened eyes. Despite everything, secrecy and the injury, he was still her little boy

The sound of footsteps echoed across the hallway, and a moment later, Jacob Ramsy stepped into the kitchen, buttoning up the cuff of his shirt with one hand and holding his half-finished coffee in the other. He looked up, noticing the harmony between mother and son, and paused.

Behind him, Willow and Aria too halted in their tracks.

Jacob blinked, amused. "Well, now this is rare. I thought it would take at least a month for you two to patch things up!"

"What are you implying? Hum?" Elina arched an eyebrow.

"Nothing at all, honey. You know how stubborn Micah can be." Jacob said, leaning to kiss Elina’s cheek.

They all knew exactly who in the family could hold a grudge against others, the word ’readily forgive’ was nonexistent in her book.

Micah scoffed, unable to hold back.

"Nice save!"

Elina tilted her head toward her son, giving him a look. "Do you have something to add, sweetheart?" her voice, despite being overly sweet, gave Micah a chill.

Micah gulped and shook his head repeatedly.

Jacob walked over, refilled his cup, and patted Micah firmly on the shoulder.

"Son. Welcome back to the family!" he said, the hint of condolences buried in his tone.

Micah glanced up, deadpan.

"Thanks for your help."

Jacob let out a short laugh and sat down on a bar stool.

Aria, ever the peacemaker, replaced her mother’s spot quickly, fishing the knife from her hands and beginning to cut some fresh fruits instead.

"Mum, go sit. I’ll do the rest."

"Alright then."

Elina held her head up and sat down gracefully. The family settled in breakfast carrying on with light conversation and clinking cutlery.

After a few minutes, Elina glanced at her son.

"Micah, What’s your plan for tomorrow?"

"Nothing in particular, why?" he replied, picking a slice of pineapple with his fork.

"Let’s go to uni together. I can show you around a bit. Maybe even invite him to tag along."

Elina said with a smile.

"Who is he?!"

Jacob asked curiously as he took a sip of his coffee.

Elina turned to her husband with a slight lift of her chin, her expression proud.

"Remember the top scorer from the college entrance exams? Micah has become friends with him."

"Oh, Really?" Jacob perked up, turning his head toward his don. "How? Did you trick him or something?"

Micah choked. He clutched his mouth and coughed hard.

"Dad!"

"What? I’m just asking! I mean, come on! How is it possible that a decent, upstanding student is friends with you? What did you do to make him look at you in a favourable light?! Eighteen years, Micah. Eighteen! Not once have we seen a respectable person stick around.

Every single one of them ran off the moment you opened your mouth or pulled some stupid prank! Am I wrong??" Jacob said.

Micah pursed his lips, pouting.

"Anyway, this one is different."

Elina nodded, chuckling under her breath.

"Yeah. He is technically his sister’s savour. He kind of has to tolerate Micah."

"Mum!" Micah exclaimed, dropping his fork in protest.

"Oh?" Jacob said, looking intrigued.

"So the girl you saved was his sister? Why didn’t you say anything earlier? Yesterday, when we went there, we could have brought it up..."

Elina’s hand flew out, waving rapidly to hush her husband. But it was too late.

"Hold on! You went where?"

Micah stood up in shock, his eyes wide open.

Jacob cleared his throat, avoiding eye contact.

"Calm down. We just met their mother. It wasn’t a big deal."

Micah’s heart sank. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. All he wanted was to gently and carefully connect Darcy to his mother, Elina, not sabotage his progress. As the novel described, meeting Elina was the turning point for Darcy’s future.

But Flora... That was different. Even Micah himself hadn’t dared to face her yet. She remained a ghost in the background, someone he thought about constantly but never dared approach.

His gaze turned to his parents, studying their expression for any sign of suspicion. Did they see it? Did they notice the resemblance? But both Jacob and Elina avoided his eyes.

His father was staring into his coffee cup as if the brown liquid was fascinating, while Elins had turned away, suddenly very interested in rearranging the fruit bowl.

Micah sat back down. If his resemblance to Flora was as obvious as he feared, surely Darcy and Nora would have realised that too. But they didn’t. And his parents seemed not to find it either.

Micah sighed in relief.

"Mum, Dad! Please don’t do that again," he muttered, half pleading, half wailing.

"I am already eighteen, not a kid! This is seriously embarrassing! Who even does that? What kind of parents go to the victim’s house to brag about their son being some noble saviour? What is he gonna think of me when he hears you guys went to his home?"

"Hey, what did we do wrong? Right, Willow, Aria? Beck me up here! You two were there too!" Jacob said.

Micah buried his flushed face deeper into his hands. Even his older sisters... Ah...

"How can I look at his face next time?!" he groaned.

"You are being dramatic! What’s so wrong about visiting the poor girl? It’s common courtesy" Jacob insisted.

Willow, ever composed, stood by the coffee machine, stirring a spoonful of sugar into her mug.

"Ramsy’s blood isn’t cheap. When it’s drawn, we have a right to see if the person deserves it or not."

Micah froze. Her words hit him like a slash of cold water.

"Wow! Big sister! That’s so cold!"

Aria chimed in.

Willow looked down at her little brother.

"Don’t do it again."

Before he could answer, Elina moved to his side, grasping Micah’s hand.

"Sweetheart, I am really proud of you... so proud that you were brave enough to rescue the girl. But honestly, I know it sounds harsh, but don’t do it ever again. Next time, just call the police, okay? I can’t see you wounded like that again."

Micah looked up, startled. Her eyes usually so calm and strong, were clouded with fear. A lump rose in his throat. He just nodded, swallowing hard. "Okay."

But deep down, even as he gave his word, he knew he would do it again. After all, that girl wasn’t just a stranger. She was his biological sister.
