Chapter 144: Knife Emojis Are a Love Language
Clyde was in the middle of an international Zoom meeting when his phone vibrated on the desk beside him. His screen lit up with a notification. He spared it a quick glance, planning to ignore it, but then he saw the name.
RogueOverlord: If you set foot near the university these days, I swear I’ll break your legs even if it means I end up in jail!
Clyde’s fingers froze above his keyboard. His face, calm and unreadable just a second ago, turned completely blank. What?
He slowly reached for his phone and unlocked it, reading the message again to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.
What was with this hostility? What had he ever done?!
CL: ???
The response came almost instantly.
RogueOverlord: Your stupid face made a headline on the campus forum! And you dragged me into it! I demand a ten-foot restraining order! Minimum.
Clyde’s brow furrowed. Headline? What was Micah talking about? He hadn’t even been near the university since that night at the takoyaki stand. Had his identity been leaked? That was not possible. If it did, Micah wouldn’t ever talk to him like that.
He quickly pulled up the university forum on his browser but found nothing related to himself or Micah. He was perplexed. What on earth was Micah yelling about?
CL: Are you drunk? Fever? Or did you finally go full delusional?
RogueOverlord: Just stay away from me and my university. Permanently.
Clyde leaned back in his office chair and rubbed his temple with two fingers. He glanced back at the meeting screen, where the faces of several board members were animatedly talking in foreign languages. He turned back to his phone.
CL: Hmm...so I take it you’re cancelling the meeting with Georgina? No need for her to see your precious designs?
RogueOverlord: I’ll give them to you this weekend! If you flake, I swear I’ll personally ruin your life!
CL: Noted. I should ask Uncle Lin to make you some mood-stabilizing tonic. Something to soothe your inner rampaging bull.
RogueOverlord: Better than being an emotionally constipated android!
CL: Ah, it’s called emotional regulation. Grown-ups do that. You should try it sometimes.
RogueOverlord: 🔪🔪🔪
Clyde let out a soft chuckle. The row of knife emojis flashed on his screen. So typical. Micah’s response when words failed him: threats of violence in emoji form.
Still, he hadn’t figured out why Micah was so frustrated and angry at him. He shook his head and was about to type back when a voice interrupted him through the earpiece.
"Umm... President Du Pont?" one of the meeting attendees said hesitantly. "We are waiting for your opinion."
Clyde raised his head and noticed all the members of the meeting were staring at him through the camera. Clyde masked his amusement and said, "Send me last year’s annual report. I’ll review the data and give my decision afterwards."
There were a few nods of acknowledgment. Clyde ended the meeting without another word, not bothering about their gossipy eyes. He knew showing slight emotion had made them curious, but they were abroad, not anywhere near Isatis city. They couldn’t do much even if they were curious. Still, it annoyed him to have slipped, even slightly in front of them.
Clyde picked up his work phone and called his assistant. "Did you get Aidan Wilson’s schedule?"
"Yes, sir. He’s attending the charity gala at the Golden Swan this Saturday night."
"Good. Add a bonus to your next paycheck," Clyde said, ending the call without waiting for a reply.
Then he switched over to his WeChat and typed.
RiverBridge: This Saturday, Golden Swan, 8:30 pm.
Clyde sent it to Micah.
This pointless connection Micah had with Aidan? It needed to end. Why was there even a need to chat with that arrogant man? The sooner Micah realised Aidan was that man he had argued with, the better. He was sure Micah wouldn’t contact Aidan again. He leaned back in his chair again, watching the city lights glow through the massive glass windows of his office. Isatis city looked peaceful from up here. But he knew that was all a facade.

Across town, Micah was a storm of curses and lashing limbs. Nick, Eddie, and Emile had gone completely quiet on their side of the dorm room, exchanging nervous looks as Micah paced like a wild animal in front of his bed.
Whoever was on the other end had some nerve poking at Micah like that.
He was holding his phone like it had personally slapped him, thumb tapping furiously at the screen.
"Stupid jerk," Micah muttered under his breath. "Stupid smooth-talking, rich robot freak... ugh!"
He punched a pillow, then threw it back into the bed, breathing hard through his nose. Every time he talked to Clyde, he ended up like this, annoyed, agitated and weirdly... emotional.
He paused, sighing deeply, and slumped onto the bed. His fingers tightened around his phone.
He took a deep breath and fell into thought.
Truthfully, it wasn’t just Clyde messing with his brain right now. He had other things to worry about.
He was getting worried about Silas. He was too quiet. Even with their family pharmaceutical shares hitting low, he had not made a move on Darcy. He had checked several times with Darcy and Nora. But they both said there was no problem. Nothing weird.
What was he doing? Did he not care about his family’s situation? Had his obsession with Darcy faded?!
Micah scoffed inwardly. No way! The man was a complete psycho. He wouldn’t be satisfied until he got his hands on his prey.
Micah felt he should be more vigilant. It was like the silence before the storm. He had a bad premonition.
Ding.
RiverBridge: This Saturday, Golden Swan, 8:30 pm.
Micah sighed. At least Aidan had replied. This weekend he could tackle one of the male leads. He needed to quicken his approach and progress his plan faster. A lot had changed. Most importantly, Flora’s illness was worsening.
He paused. His thoughts drifted to his grandmother. A pang hit his chest.
He didn’t want to lose her like in the novel. Not without letting her see Darcy even once.
