Chapter 119: That Would Be Fun to Watch
Clyde sat at the long dining table, his back straight, one hand loosely wrapped around a warm teacup. The soft aroma of Ceylon tea drifted up from the cup, but he barely noticed. His eyes were fixed on his phone screen. Nothing. No new message from Micah/Asena/RogueOverlord. The last message was from more than a week ago. The day he had figured out Micah’s identity and WeChat account. And what was about? Micah praised Aidan Wilson.
Clyde let out a slow breath, jaw tightening. He didn’t want to admit it, but the silence was starting to bother him. Maybe even more than he liked to admit. After Micah’s last message, Clyde had been annoyed, a bit angry even. So he hadn’t replied. Those emotions had been a surprise. It had been a long time since he had really felt anger, irritation, or disappointment... but that boy had managed to stir it all with a single text.
Clyde had tossed the phone aside at that time, not replying. But there was no news from Micah either after that.
What was Micah’s intention in sending tips and hints about business deals and stocks to Aidan Wilson? Was this a game? Was Micah trying to bait Aidain with his praise?
Was he trying to step into the business world using someone else as a tool? Or maybe trying to earn favour from someone like Aidan to climb higher?
But Clyde knew for a fact that Micah hadn’t even met the man before. Had no idea what Aidan looked like. So what was his goal? Just some blind power play?
It didn’t make sense.
And if he was trying to climb into the business world, then why was he studying fashion design of all things? Shouldn’t he be in a finance program? Or business management?!
Something with numbers, not fabrics.
Clyde swirled the tea in his teacup. He didn’t like having questions without answers. He especially didn’t like that the answers seemed to revolve around one boy, one silver-haired, freckles, nosy troublemaker who had taken up too much space in his head lately.
The obsession was stupid. He knew it. Still, that boy got under his skin like no one else.
And then there was his involvement in the Leo McKay scandal. Clyde’s team had erased every clue every time Twilight Entertainment or the Military had been close to finding out about Micah.
And why was he doing all this free work for Micah?!
The boy had filled all his mind, but he himself had gone silent. Was his stomach acting up again?
Clyde pressed his lips together. The boy was a foodie. Not a chance he would control his eating habits. What if he had eaten too much junk again and ended up in the hospital?
"Uncle, are you listening?" Jacklin’s voice pulled him back.
Clyde took his gaze from the teacup. "Hum?"
Jacklin sat across from him, lazily poking at her eggs with a fork.
"I said, Emile will be free today. Let’s have dinner together."
"Okay," Clyde said.
Jacklin pulled out her phone quickly and typed a message. A minute later, her expression shifted. She stared at the screen and paused. "Ah... Emile says he already promised his friends he would eat out with them tonight."
"Let’s make it another time," Clyde said flatly.
"Nope! Have you forgotten? Tomorrow, I fly to the west branch for that project. And Dean needs to go see Uncle Gabin, too."
Clyde’s hand froze midlift. He glanced at her. Then slowly set the cup down. "Book a large room at his favourite restaurant. Tell Emile to bring his friends too."
"Will his roommates be there too?" Dean asked hesitantly, glancing at his uncle’s face.
By roommates, he meant Micah Ramsy, Asena’s supposed boyfriend. The one his little uncle didn’t even want to hear his name.
"I’ll schedule it for another time. You all can have fun." Clyde said.
How could he show himself to Micah?! The only advantage he had was that Micah didn’t know he was Emile’s uncle. It was his trump card. He wasn’t about to throw it away just to share a meal.
"And don’t mention our family name," Clyde added, his voice calm but firm. "I don’t want Emile being targeted just because he’s a Du Pont."
Dean and Jacklin both nodded, though their thoughts were running elsewhere. They assumed little uncle didn’t want the Du Pont family tied to the Ramsys. Especially because of Micah being Asena’s boyfriend.
Clyde glanced down at his tea again. If Micah showed up and saw Jacklin... what kind of face would he make? Would he break into a sweat? Avoid her eyes? Maybe even get flustered? That would be fun to watch. The corner of his mouth stretched slightly into a tiny grin. Good. Let the boy suffer a bit. He wasn’t the only one allowed to keep secrets. Let him panic a little. Let him wonder if Jacklin knew something.
It wasn’t fair. Ever since Clyde figured out Micah was Asena, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about him. Wondering what Micah’s real goal was. Who he wanted to help. Who he wanted to hurt.
Why should he be the only one losing sleep over it?
Let Micah worry for once. Let him feel that tight feeling in his chest every time someone mentioned a name he wasn’t supposed to know. Let him lose sleep wondering if Emile or the others would find out his secret.
Clyde’s small smile turned sharp. Almost dangerous.
Across from him, Jacklin and Dean sat stiffly. The air around the table felt strange again. Their little uncle was acting weird these days. Distracted, thoughtful, and sometimes staring at nothing with this amused, unreadable expression.
Was knowing Asena had been taken a big blow to their uncle? Was he losing his mind?
"Uncle, you know... girls at that age, eighteen, nineteen... They just want to experience the thrill of liking someone. They aren’t serious about it." Jacklin said, fidgeting with her sleeve.
Clyde paused, glancing at her slowly.
She swallowed, but kept going. "So, if you really like her, you should go for it..." Jacklin’s voice died down.
Clyde stared at her like she had just suggested he marry a ghost. His expression was blank, almost pitying. It was the kind of look you gave someone who had no idea what they were talking about.
Jacklin cleared her throat awkwardly. "I’ll be late," she said, then stood up and walked off, almost tripping on the chair leg.
Dean also didn’t linger around.
Clyde sat alone in the dining room. He stared down at his phone again. Then, after a second, he typed a message to a troublemaker.
RiverBridge: You didn’t say what you need? I am happy to repay the favour.
Clyde thought Micah should be in the class right now. Probably ignoring his phone. But a reply came quicker than expected.
RogueOverlord: When I need it, I’ll be sure to ask you first.
Clyde smirked faintly. Still pretending he didn’t want anything.
RiverBridge: I don’t like owing people. What if I give you a hint about the industry?
RogueOverlord: No, I don’t need that.
RiverBridge: Fine. Free now? Let’s find something you want.
RogueOverlord: in class, studying.
Clyde raised an eyebrow. So the boy had no problem sharing real-life upgrades with Aidan Wilson? Not a second thought? How trusting.
Then just as he was about to type, the message disappeared, more withdrawn.
Clyde blinked, then let out a chuckle. "Idiot!"
