Chapter 113: Struck by Frost
Last night:
Archie Norris walked across the campus, his hands in his hoodie’s pockets, and the evening breeze brushed past his face. His mind was filled with that silver-haired boy. He remembered Lulu saying he was a freshman, so that explained why he was with Russell in military training.
Was it really him? That trashy support FrostbiteAshe? How could he be sure?
He knew his obsession was bizarre. But the boy had caught his eyes. Archie halted in his tracks, looking straight.
The first time he had seen him was right here, in front of the university entrance, the boy brushed past him, bumping into his shoulder, but all his attention was on something else. He remembered that tousled silver hair and black-framed glasses that highlighted the boy’s pale skin. He didn’t even glance at him. That was the first time anyone had ever ignored him. With his striking handsomeness and build, no one could resist staring at him. But the boy did. That struck a chord in him.
Then there was that match when he played instead of Zian to measure DarkVyne’s skill, but he ran into FrostbiteAshe, who somehow read their team’s ambush and cast a spell on their way, revealing his teammates’ attack.
The freshman’s champion was only a low-damage support, yet he saved the match by seeing through a tactic the Legion had ridden to victory all season.
Archie took a taxi and arrived at the SilverBlade Legion camp. He pushed the training room door open and stepped into the dark space that smelled of energy drinks and warm plastic. Rows of PCs were lit up. His teammates were focusing on the match, yelling at each other through headsets. He walked past them and opened another door to the rest area. He slumped on the bed and ran a hand through his brown hair.
"Was it really him? That trash tier support?" he muttered.
He flopped down on the bed, gazing at the ceiling.
Should he ask directly? Walk right up to him, and introduce himself as the captain of the SilverBlade Legion? Would he be amazed? Would he look at him with eyes full of adoration?
Then, would the boy ask to join his team? If he did, he could probably put him in the second squad. He was the captain; no one would object.
Oh, right, there was also that DarkVyne, was he his friend? He could rope him into the team, too. With his monster talent in the mid lane, their team surely could break the national top five!
Archie smiled, picturing the bright future.
His phone vibrated. Russell, his younger brother’s name, flashed on the screen. Archie swiped to answer.
"Brother, I asked around. Not many people know him. But his name is Micah Ramsy."
"That’s it? How can there be no gossip about him?"
"Well, I still have not yet found any of his former classmates. Or maybe they were not brave enough to speak about him. I think he was one of those school bullies or something!" Russell said with a voice full of conviction.
Archie paused. "What exactly did he do for you to think he is a bully?"
"Ah, I don’t know how to say it, but he has an arrogance around him. The first thing that pops into your head when he looks at you is villain vibes!" Russell said.
Archie rubbed his forehead, thinking his younger brother had read too many novels. Every new face was either a secret master or an evil young lord in his eyes. "Nothing else? Right, why was he arguing with Flinn and you today?"
"Oh, that mess. Well, as I said before, Flinn repeated some rumours from the forum that we saw in the gaming club. About how the freshman rep was dirt poor and climbed up by back-stabbing and bootlicking. Now, I think about it...those words were a bit too much..."
"What were you doing in the gaming club? Gossiping?"
"You know Ashley, right?" Russell said hesitantly.
"Yeah, he is Elly’s cousin, so?" Archie raised an eyebrow.
"He was the one showing us the rumours in their high school forum. Then things got out of hand and spread in the uni about the freshman rep. That boy, Micah, was so angry when Flinn repeated the gossip."
"Really? Ashley? That mute who never talks? Why would he do that?"
"That’s the strange part. Elly merely suggested that we pick him as our club poster boy, and Ashley flipped out."
Archie paused, thinking. It was a good opportunity to curry favour with Micah and his friend, and also get rid of Ashley, that creep. He never liked the way the boy looked at Russell. "Alright. Thanks. Check your phone before bed. I may need a favour."
Archie hung up the phone. He sat behind the computer and found the forum Russell had mentioned. It was full of bad-mouthing a person. They called him DEW. Probably an abbreviation of his full name.
"DEW: Double-faced Earthworm: school’s fakest saint exposed!"
Post after post roasted this mystery DEW, calling him a leech, a snake and a fraud. Scrolling, Archie spotted scraps of a scholarship, an award photo and then a blurry shot of a person leaving a nightclub.
Archie could feel the hate. He screenshotted every page, dropped them into a folder and went to the university forum. There wasn’t much, just a post or comment hinting at the freshman rep’s hypocrisy.
Archie noted their IP and sent all of that to his friend with IT skills.
"Help me locate the person behind these trolls."
Archie leaned back, hands behind his head.
Elly was one of the best support members of his team, but unfortunately, her wrist injury stopped her from playing games professionally. But she stayed and shared tips with new members, managing the uni club and finding talented people. Archie had tolerated her cousin Ashley because of her help. Otherwise, when Russell began to hang around the club and this freak also showed up, he would have thrown that boy, Ashley, out. Never let him anywhere near his younger brother.
But he had tolerated him out of respect for Elly. Now, if Ashley was the source of the smear posts, Archie finally had a solid reason to kick him out and do Micah a favour in one move.
And that silver-haired boy would definitely be grateful to him. Archie smiled triumphantly.
