Chapter 111: Why Was He So Angry?
Chapter 111: Why Was He So Angry?
The next morning, Micah yanked the dorm room open with a reluctant groan, rubbing his sleepy eyes as he stepped out. A familiar figure leaned casually against the opposite wall, arms crossed, gaze steady.
"Hey," Micah said, a little startled. "When did you get here?"
"Just now," Darcy replied, voice hoarse with sleep. For some reason, he had woken up later than usual.
Then the rest of the 306 occupants tumbled out after Micah, not better off. Eyes half open, hair sticking out at every angle like a crew’s nest.
"What were you doing last night?" Darcy asked, seeing their state.
"These morons came up with the idea of telling scary stories we’d heard, and the result was none of us could sleep afterwards!" Micah mumbled, rubbing his face.
Darcy chuckled.
"Hey! Don’t laugh at us! These guys were nuts! Telling real ghost stories from their hometown!" Emile said. "Look! I even search the news! There were all unresolved cases!"
Micah nodded. "The funny thing was they scared the shit out of themselves too!"
"Don’t talk to me... I am hungry," Nick grumbled.
"And I wasn’t afraid at all. You all kept talking, didn’t let me sleep!" Eddie said.
"Yeah, right! Even the ghosts are laughing! Who was the one calling us every ten minutes?" Micah scoffed.
"Stop bickering! My head hurts!"Emile said.
"Tsk..." Micah strolled forward, yanking Darcy’s arm along with himself.
After they had enough distance, Micah stretched his arms over his head with a groan, joints cracking one by one.
"Ah... I am starving too! But nope, gotta stand like scarecrows for an hour first! What kind of medieval punishment is this? I swear I will never go near anything military in my life!" Micah grumbled.
Darcy’s brows furrowed. "What is it? Your stomach is acting up again? Did you take your meds?"
Micah blinked at him and raised a hand as if to ward off the concern. "Easy tiger! Yeah, I took it this morning before eating anything, like always," he sighed. "I meant we’re stuck in this military camp. Can’t eat when we want."
"Really?" Darcy gave him a sideways look. "If you want, I could talk to the instructor. Maybe get you exempted."
"Since when were you so chummy with him?" Micah asked suspiciously.
"Nope, I’m not." Darcy looked entirely unbothered. "But I am kind of the student rep for the freshmen during training weeks, so I have my privileges."
"Heck! Why didn’t you say earlier? I could’ve been feasting this whole time!" Micah huffed.
"I thought you figured it out after I gave you the thermos the first day," Darcy said.
Micah slapped his forehead. "Ah, stupid!"
Darcy laughed, the sound low and warm.
They reached the training field and split up.
Before the flag-raising ceremony began, Nick got closer to Micah, still half asleep and yawning. "Hey man, what Darcy said, was it true?"
"Fuck! How the hell did you hear that?! Weren’t you guys behind us?!"
"My ears work like radars when there is talk about food," Nick said lazily, leaning on Micah’s shoulder.
Micah gave him a look. "Yeah. But don’t get any ideas. He can’t just hand out an exemption like candy. You foodie never gonna be full anyway."
"But he said he could do it for you."
"That’s because I’ve got a letter from my doctor. You got a note? No? Then zip it."
"Shit, blatant discrimination against us normy!" Nick grumbled.
Micah just smirked.
Later, at noon in the canteen, trays clattered and conversation buzzed. Micah had just bitten into a chicken leg when a hesitant voice called out.
"Hey... can I talk to you?"
Micah turned, his jaw freezing mid-chew.
Russell Norris.
Micah was stunned. Then, for a moment, his instincts flared. Automatically, he stood up, interposing himself between Darcy and the source of potential trouble, shielding him without thought. His body stiffened, already preparing for a confrontation. But to his surprise, Archie’s brother’s gaze wasn’t on Darcy. It was on him.
"Me?" Micah asked, pointing at his chest.
Russell nodded. "Yeah, just for a second."
"Okay," he said in a daze.
Darcy shifted beside him, as if preparing to follow, but Micah gave him a small shake of his head.
He followed Russell into a quiet, empty corner near the kitchen doors.
"So what is this about? Hmm? That you have to talk to me alone?!" Micah asked, crossing his arms.
Russell looked nervous, clearly unsure why Archie had sent him to talk to this scary boy alone. His hands fidgeted at his sides, his eyes flicking down to the floor before meeting Micah’s again.
"Well, my brother wants to apologise... in person."
"No." Micah refused instantly.
Are you kidding him? Meeting with Archie?!
"Wait! We are really sorry. I know it’s a lot to ask...We know we messed up. But my brother wants to bring the guy who started the rumour. The real culprit." Russell said.
Micah paused. "The person behind the rumour?"
"Yeah! I told my brother everything, and he quickly tracked him down!"
"Piece of shit!" Micah mumbled in anger.
That Esports captain clearly knew Micah wasn’t the one behind the rumours about Darcy, but painted him as the one in the novel! He knew he would never be like that!
He wanted to storm off now, to find Archie and beat him to pulp! And the culprit, too, punch them in the face together!
He seethed in rage, clenching his fist, nails digging into his palm, stopping himself from lashing out.
"Okay. When?" he asked through gritted teeth.
"Oh, tonight, after they dismiss us."
"Sure. I’ll bring Darcy too." Micah said, already forming a plan. He couldn’t go alone. He should nip the bud before it can take root. Darcy had to hear the truth from the start.
He didn’t know who the culprit was. What if he let it go easily? What if there was bad blood between Darcy and him?
He wanted Darcy to know that he had not had a hand in this rumour, in this smear campaign. This was one plot point Micah intended to eliminate for good.
Still, he couldn’t ignore the tightness in his chest. The selfish part of him flared up....Dragging Darcy into a confrontation with one of the deceptive male leads... yeah, it was selfish, Micah knew that. But the idea of Darcy suspecting him, thinking he had collaborated with Archie, it was unbearable. His action surely would make Darcy meet Archie sooner than was said in the novel.
There was a possibility that Archie would be attracted to Darcy from now on. But Micah, after seeing Silas with Darcy, had this confidence that there would be nothing. Not at least from Darcy’s side.
"Alright. I’ll see you tonight."
Micah made an appointment with Russell, then returned to the table and sat down with a thud.
"What was about?" Darcy asked.
"About those rumours. He said tonight he will bring the culprit."
Micah said, biting into the chicken leg again, chewing a little too forcefully.
"What rumours?" Nick asked, looking up from his tray.
"Nothing serious. Eat your meal." Micah said.
Darcy could tell Micah’s mood had dropped. He watched him carefully, his eyes narrowing slightly. He could see there was a tension under his forced, natural expression.
Why was he so angry?!
What did that boy say to get under Micah’s skin like that?
