Frightening Joke: Above the Mist -
Chapter 49 Mountain Road
Chapter 49: Chapter 49 Mountain Road
"Screech——"
The sound of brakes, accompanied by intense inertia, gave Bai Yanliang’s body a sudden jolt.
Even though he hadn’t opened his eyes yet, he sensed that he was on some kind of vehicle.
"Damn, it’s broken down."
A heavily accented shout came from the front.
At this point, Bai Yanliang finally regained control of his body and opened his eyes.
Li Mu, Lin Yan, Yu Hanzhou, Huang Yourong, Su Qian, Yu Sheng, and himself, everyone was seated on this long-distance bus.
Besides them, there were other passengers as well.
"Get off, get off! Everybody off!"
The short, hefty driver was shouting from outside the bus.
"The bus is broken, get down quickly!"
"What the heck, in this deserted wilderness, where are we supposed to go? The sun’s almost setting." A fashionably dressed young woman, holding a corgi, glared discontentedly at the driver.
"What can I do? If you can make it move, I’ll drive right away!"
The people on the bus watched the two argue with varied expressions.
This bus... seemed to be full of people rushing to return home.
"Let’s get off, everyone’s having a hard time..." An elderly man suggested.
Li Mu and the others exchanged glances and also got off the bus.
With Su Qian’s help, Yu Sheng managed everything fairly smoothly as well.
This long-distance bus was taking an old mountain road, and it was precisely at dusk, with dim and gloomy sunlight enveloping the surrounding trees, casting bizarre shadows on the ground.
The area around them seemed devoid of life, eerily quiet.
Before long, everyone was off the bus.
The driver did a head count and said, "It’s going to be dark soon, and we can’t spend the night on the mountain. Let’s walk ahead; I remember there’s a village nearby."
"What? You want me to sleep in the countryside?" The young woman holding her dog screamed.
"You can damn well sleep on the bus if you want, just ask if anyone will stay with you!" The stocky driver yelled, annoyed with the young woman’s attitude. "If you’re so picky, take a damn plane!"
The woman’s face turned red and white alternately, and she clutched her dog, trembling, unable to retort.
In this deep mountain forest, the bus broke down on the mountain road, with no cell signal whatsoever; if this chubby driver really did something to her, she’d be the one suffering the loss.
The more she thought about it, the less safe she felt. The trees, the mountains, the nameless insects, the dim sky, and the grotesque shadows—everything seemed to become out of the ordinary.
"So... young man, when will the bus be fixed?" The elderly man who had spoken earlier asked.
"Dunno, anyway, I can’t fix it alone, so I said let’s head for the village and find some phone signal, right?" The stocky driver said, glaring at the woman.
"If you don’t want to go, then rest on the bus. If anything happens, it’s not my problem. Now, raise your hand if you’re willing to follow me to the village!"
Since the driver put it that way, everyone looked around at each other and raised their hands in agreement.
Besides, deep in this forest, the ancient trees rose to the sky, blocking out the sun. The forest looked eerie and mysterious.
That’s how it looked in daylight; who knows what frightening things might appear once it’s dark? Who dared to spend the night on the bus?
As for Bai Yanliang and the other six, they didn’t have any other option; if they didn’t go to the village, Fog Gathering would undoubtedly consider it as giving up.
Who knew what consequences that might bring?
The young woman holding the dog didn’t say anything more and obediently agreed.
Including Bai Yanliang’s group of seven, there were thirteen people in total.
The stocky driver identified the direction and motioned everyone to enter the dense forest.
"I’ve only heard from the guys who run this route that there’s a village somewhere around here, but I honestly don’t know the exact location, so keep your eyes open and help look for it."
The driver’s words made everyone uneasy; what if... they couldn’t find the village before dark, what then?
The group plunged into the woods, where the light was dim, and the tall, straight trees blocked most of the sunlight, allowing only sparse rays to filter through the leaves.
Decaying, damp leaves and twigs made the ground unstable to step on, uneven and treacherous, and the women occasionally let out small cries of alarm.
In these conditions, maneuvering Yu Sheng’s wheelchair was even more challenging.
"Hey, is she your friend?" The stocky driver stopped and frowned.
"What’s up?" Li Mu asked calmly, looking at him.
"She’s too slow, that’s what’s up. Someone needs to carry her, leave the wheelchair here, and come back for it later."
The stocky driver’s tone had a strange bossiness to it, which was quite off-putting.
Everyone turned their gaze towards Yu Sheng, uncertain of what they were thinking.
In this situation, agreeing to carry her meant being responsible for her throughout this mission.
In the real world, the gentlemen wouldn’t mind showing some gallantry. After all, although she had mobility issues, she was attractive and gentle.
But... this was Fog Gathering.
Carrying such a large burden with impaired mobility was headache-inducing just to think about.
Li Mu looked straight at Yu Sheng without avoiding her gaze but didn’t make any extra moves.
Yu Hanzhou hesitated; he had just begun to step forward when he was suddenly, gently pulled back by a hand from behind.
Turning slightly, he saw Su Qian giving a slight shake of her head.
Huang Yourong didn’t even glance at Yu Sheng; he was frowning, appearing deep in thought.
Yu Sheng glanced over everyone without saying a word.
She lowered her head and quietly sat in her wheelchair.
The dim, evening light poured through the leaf gaps onto her, making her appear remarkably beautiful but also very much like... a useless object abandoned in the forest.
"I’ll carry you, if you don’t mind?"
At this moment, an unfamiliar voice suddenly came from behind her.
Yu Sheng turned her head to find Bai Yanliang, who had been at the back.
She looked at him, and he looked back at her expressionlessly, not even offering a polite smile.
But... she felt a bit absent-minded and, after a moment, nodded softly, "Thank you."
Watching Bai Yanliang squat and lift Yu Sheng effortlessly onto his back, Li Mu and the others watched with different expressions, lost in thought.
Though he was odd, he was still a naive young man.
Bai Yanliang wasn’t aware of their evaluations; he carried Yu Sheng, following at the back of the group, as Yu Sheng slightly tilted her head to look at his profile, wondering what he was thinking.
"I have a question."
Bai Yanliang suddenly spoke softly.
At this volume, Yu Sheng quickly realized he was speaking to her alone.
"What’s up?"
Bai Yanliang slowed his pace slightly and asked, "I want to know... what are you hiding in the sleeve of your right hand?"
After these words, Bai Yanliang clearly felt Yu Sheng’s body stiffen, followed by a long silence.
"Never mind, I’m just curious," Bai Yanliang didn’t press further and quickly changed the topic, keeping pace with the others.
"Hey! Is that the village you mentioned?"
The voice of a middle-aged man rang out in excitement.
Everyone followed his finger to see a cluster of low buildings, shrouded in the evening mist on the opposite mountainside. Among the intertwining mountains and forests, vague human shapes seemed to move within the fog. However... the ghastly white mist looked unsettling, much like... the skin of a corpse.
