Frightening Joke: Above the Mist -
Chapter 42 Meeting
Chapter 42: Chapter 42 Meeting
When Bai Yanliang woke up, it was already eight in the morning.
This morning, he didn’t go out but stayed quietly in the hotel, carefully sorting through his brother’s belongings.
Bai Yanren was a private detective. Bai Yanliang pondered deeply and realized he knew very little about his brother. He only remembered that Yanren often left for several days, but he always left money with the landlady to take care of him, even though Bai Yanliang felt he didn’t need any taking care of.
Flipping through the files preserved by Yang Wanlong, Bai Yanliang didn’t find anything particularly valuable.
Most of these documents were contracts with clients, including investigating infidelity, hiring people to search for relatives, legally collecting debts, and even finding cats and dogs. Overall, they were all very ordinary and normal detective work.
But... in the midst of these normal things, Bai Yanren’s belongings included a strange silver key.
And that key could open the door to Fog Gathering.
What is Fog Gathering?
Although he had already experienced one mission, Bai Yanliang remained clueless. He didn’t even know if returning to the real past world would affect the real world eventually? If... it could really affect reality, the time paradox involved would be too complex.
But, if it couldn’t have any effect, what was Fog Gathering’s intention in sending people to that strange space-time?
He didn’t think it was just some unknown being’s boring joke.
If such an existence really existed, humans might not even be qualified to be considered toys.
Bai Yanliang finished organizing Yanren’s files and quietly looked out the window.
In any case, he had already entered Fog Gathering. According to Zhou Li, the next entry should be in a month.
As long as he could keep surviving, he would know everything someday, and someday, he would discover the truth about Yanren’s death...
He would make the thing that killed Yanren pay the heaviest price, no matter what... existence it was.
Withdrawing his thoughts, Bai Yanliang took a shower, changed his clothes, then leisurely had lunch before heading out for an appointment.
The hotel he was staying at was near Rong Bridge Sky Street, and after some inquiries, he quickly found Yuanmu Cafe.
During the lunch break, Yuanmu Cafe had a few scattered white-collar workers from nearby offices.
At a window seat, Bai Yanliang saw her.
She was dressed in a pure white fashionable outerwear, with big sunglasses covering most of her face.
She seemed to be thinking about something, her head slightly turned towards the window. From where Bai Yanliang stood, he could clearly see her high-bunched long hair and her exquisite yet indifferent profile.
It seemed she noticed Bai Yanliang’s gaze and quickly turned her head to look at him.
"Am I late?"
Bai Yanliang moved in front of her, pulled out a chair, and sat down while politely declining the server’s recommendation for coffee, asking for a glass of plain water instead.
"I was early."
Feng Xiuxue responded softly.
Her voice was a bit unexpected for Bai Yanliang. After seeing her in person, he expected her voice to be colder, but he didn’t expect it to be exceptionally gentle.
"What do you want from me?"
Bai Yanliang didn’t intend to make small talk. After taking the plain water from the server, who gave him a peculiar look, he straightforwardly asked the question.
Feng Xiuxue suddenly sat up straight, quietly looking at him.
Although her sunglasses hid her eyes, Bai Yanliang could still feel the complex emotions in her gaze.
After a long silence, Feng Xiuxue took a photo out of her handbag and placed it in front of Bai Yanliang.
"You should recognize this person."
The perpetually calm Bai Yanliang tightened his grip on the cup. He looked at the photo; it was somewhat aged, with the corners faded slightly, but it had been well-preserved by its owner.
The photo showed a man in a white casual outfit. He was grinning broadly, resembling Bai Yanliang by about seventy percent, though his demeanor was more approachable, kind, mature, and composed.
How could he not recognize him?
But he never expected to see a photo of Yanren in the hands of a highly recognized national celebrity.
However, something was off.
Yanren had his incident ten years ago. Even if he was involved with Fog Gathering, that was ten years ago. But... Feng Xiuxue was still in Fog Gathering? Could it be that she had spent ten years there?
"Where did this photo come from?" Bai Yanliang finally asked after a long silence.
Feng Xiuxue kept looking at Bai Yanliang. She hardly ever met a man who could conceal his true inner thoughts from her, but she had to admit she felt frustrated with Bai Yanliang.
She couldn’t see any emotion in Bai Yanliang’s eyes. The only thing that made him lose composure was the subconscious tightening of his grip on the water glass at first sight of the photo.
But, that was enough.
"Bai Yanliang, Bai Yanren... you really are brothers..." Feng Xiuxue seemed to sigh with relief, musing aloud.
"You haven’t answered my question." Bai Yanliang looked at her calmly.
Feng Xiuxue looked at him, and without pretending, she seriously said:
"Your brother is my brother-in-law."
"What?!"
For the first time, surprise showed in Bai Yanliang’s eyes. He looked at Feng Xiuxue, as if he hadn’t heard it clearly, and asked again: "Yanren... is your brother-in-law? He was married?"
At this moment, Feng Xiuxue took another photo from her handbag and placed it next to Bai Yanren’s.
The photo showed a young woman, very beautiful, exuding intellectual beauty. Feng Xiuxue and she looked quite similar, except their demeanor was entirely different.
"This is my sister, Feng Yiru. I use her name in the entertainment industry." Feng Xiuxue took a sip of her coffee, which was the bitterest black coffee, without any additives.
"Ten years ago, my sister suddenly disappeared. Our family was frantic, and while searching for her, we accidentally discovered she was already married, and her husband was your brother, Bai Yanren."
So, he does have a sister-in-law?
Bai Yanliang felt his mind was in a bit of turmoil, something that rarely happened to him, since very few things affected his emotions.
"Bai Yanliang, there’s something wrong with your brother’s death, and there’s also something wrong with my sister’s disappearance." Feng Xiuxue put down her coffee, earnestly speaking to Bai Yanliang.
In fact, she noticed him the moment Bai Yanliang entered Fog Gathering. With such resemblance in looks and name, there couldn’t be so many coincidences. But... if Bai Yanliang hadn’t survived his first mission, she wouldn’t have needed to tell him these things.
Fortunately, Bai Yanliang didn’t disappoint Feng Xiuxue, or rather, Bai Yanliang’s abilities far exceeded her expectations.
He should be able to help her, help her... find them.
