Frightening Joke: Above the Mist -
Chapter 36 Life
Chapter 36: Chapter 36 Life
"Hmm... sort of." Bai Yanliang tacitly agreed to the so-called identity of an informant.
Yang Yiyi’s bright eyes sparkled like stars as she excitedly stared at Bai Yanliang. In her understanding, Bai Yanliang must be like that nameless hero in novels and movies who lurks deep within evil for the sake of justice.
"Are you on a mission?"
"Sort... of."
"Wow!"
"How old are you? Are you married?"
"..."
"Hey, hey, do you think I have the talent to be a police officer?"
"..."
This enthusiastic high school girl was obviously getting deeper into her misunderstanding. While Bai Yanliang wasn’t much of a conversationalist, Yang Yiyi kept pestering him with questions one after another.
"Can you do me a favor?"
Bai Yanliang suddenly said.
Yang Yiyi’s eyes lit up as she patted her not-so-full chest and said coquettishly, "Just say it!"
"First, go hide in your room. I have something important to discuss with your father later." Bai Yanliang looked into her eyes and spoke earnestly.
"No problem!" Yang Yiyi felt very excited, as if she were part of a grand scheme. She quickly grabbed her backpack and hid in the room.
Then she closed the door and pressed her ear against it, listening to the sounds outside.
Bai Yanliang shook his head helplessly.
This girl was protected too well, her mind not quite mature.
Just as he was thinking this, Yang Wanlong finally returned.
"I found a restaurant and ordered a few dishes. But they told me that using a phone to order takeout could be delivered directly to home with a decent discount, sigh..." Yang Wanlong, with a plastic bag in each hand, seemed a bit speechless. Then he looked at Bai Yanliang and said, "You should get a phone too. You couldn’t use one before, but now that you’re out, you should keep up with the times."
Through the door, Yang Yiyi listened to her father’s words. Instantly, she imagined a scene where Bai Yanliang, undercover behind enemy lines, had his phone monitored and couldn’t use it, so he had to send messages using special codes. Excitedly, she stomped her foot.
Such noise couldn’t escape Bai Yanliang’s and Yang Wanlong’s notice. Yang Wanlong called inside, "Yiyi?"
Yang Yiyi opened the door a crack, revealing half of her face. "I didn’t hear anything... I didn’t hear anything at all!"
"What are you talking about? Come out for dinner. Why are you home so early today? Not staying for night classes?"
Yang Wanlong asked as he set the dishes.
"There was an incident at school just now, and we were all sent back!" Yang Yiyi opened her bedroom door, poking out half her body and spoke excitedly.
"An incident?" Yang Wanlong looked at her in confusion, and Bai Yanliang also showed slight curiosity towards Yang Yiyi.
"Yeah! Our high school’s first-year grade director was suddenly stabbed by a crazy student with a compass. He’s been sent to the hospital."
Crazy?
This word struck a sensitive nerve with both Yang Wanlong and Bai Yanliang. Yang Wanlong slumped onto the sofa, looking at his daughter and asked, "Do you know the specifics?"
Yang Yiyi glanced at Yang Wanlong and then at Bai Yanliang. Seeing both of them looking at her, she couldn’t help but feel a bit excited.
But she quickly shook her head slightly and said, "I’m not too sure either. We were just starting our night study when we heard noises outside—sounds of things being thrown, cries for help, and security scolding. It was a complete mess. Later, we heard that a first-year student went crazy, grabbed a compass, and stabbed the grade director in the neck. It went right through, and there was blood everywhere!"
"No one stopped him?" Yang Wanlong frowned slightly.
"They did! I heard several security guards tried, but they couldn’t pull him away, even tearing his clothes to pieces. The student’s strength was unusually great!"
Bai Yanliang’s heart stirred. He turned to Yang Wanlong and said, "Uncle Yang, I would like to..."
Yang Wanlong pondered for a moment. His work as a criminal investigator was already busy, with a case reaching a critical point. This campus violence incident probably wouldn’t fall into his jurisdiction.
"Yiyi." Yang Wanlong suddenly called, "Tomorrow’s the weekend. With the incident at your school, accompany Brother Bai to buy a phone."
Bai Yanliang was about to refuse, but Yang Wanlong continued, "Let Yiyi go with you. We’ll keep in touch by phone."
"Got it!" Yang Yiyi wasn’t too pleased at first, but hearing she could investigate the violent incident, her eyes immediately lit up with a smile.
Bai Yanliang was silent for a moment. He could vaguely understand Yang Wanlong’s attitude with this arrangement.
"Thank you, Uncle Yang."
In the end, Bai Yanliang smiled, with no trace of reluctance on his face.
"Let’s eat." Yang Wanlong called.
The three sat together at the table, appearing harmonious, but Bai Yanliang’s posture remained upright, with no trace of casualness.
Yang Yiyi kept asking all sorts of strange questions, showing great interest in this young and handsome "informant."
But Bai Yanliang only smiled without answering her.
Yang Wanlong also tacitly remained silent.
After dinner and a simple wash, Bai Yanliang lay down on the sofa.
He simply couldn’t sleep in a strange woman’s room. Seeing his insistence, Yang Wanlong didn’t persuade him further.
Sleeping on the sofa wasn’t a big deal for Bai Yanliang, and due to his mental exhaustion, he quickly fell asleep.
Bai Yanliang’s dreams were bizarre and surreal.
He dreamt of Zhang Qiao under the bed, of a bloated Li Yuhua, of a deformed Ding Lei, and even of Feng Xinghan, with no remains left.
That robust middle-aged man, in the end, Bai Yanliang didn’t even see his body.
Life is so fragile. Perhaps one day, he would silently die in another world.
Maybe by then, he would understand what a ghost is.
Are ghosts really the souls of the dead?
Perhaps humanity’s rich consciousness is a tragic error in long-term evolution, and humans shouldn’t exist at all.
Because we know too much about ourselves.
"Hey! Wake up!"
One strange dream intertwined with another. Just as Bai Yanliang dreamt of Bai Yanren standing in front of him, saying something, a lively girl’s voice sounded in his ear.
Bai Yanliang slowly opened his eyes to see a youthful, pretty face.
He slightly turned his head. The lazy morning sunlight filtered through the window, and the air was filled with the unique freshness of early morning. The city’s hustle and bustle brought its own sound, and now and then, a bird’s chirping or a vibrant wildflower revealed the breath of life in this concrete forest.
"What are you looking at?" Seeing Bai Yanliang staring out the window, somewhat distracted, Yang Yiyi curiously glanced out too but saw nothing unusual.
Bai Yanliang smiled and shook his head, then climbed up from the sofa and said:
"Nothing, I was just thinking, it’s good to be alive."
