Frightening Joke: Above the Mist -
Chapter 108 Isolation
Chapter 108: Chapter 108 Isolation
The night filled with worries was supposed to be exceptionally long.
But Bai Yanliang actually fell asleep.
In a place where you know there’s a ghost, you should absolutely not fall asleep, let alone with Bai Yanliang’s vigilance, it’s even more impossible for him to suddenly fall into unconsciousness.
Yet it really happened.
When he woke up again, it was already daylight.
Moreover, Bai Yanliang wasn’t naturally awakened.
He blinked his eyes, a few drops of strange liquid dripped out, and everything in front of him was a bit blurry.
A nurse stood by the bed, holding a rubber dropper in her hand, looking down at him from above.
Yes, the kind of dropper often used in chemistry experiments.
Bai Yanliang rubbed his eyes, and in his sleep, he vaguely sensed that this nurse had forcibly propped open his eyelids and dropped something into his eyes.
Seeing him awake, she took something out and placed it on the bedside table, saying, "After three minutes, apply this bottle yourself."
With that, she turned and left the ward.
What is this liquid?
Feeling the chill and stinging in his eyes, Bai Yanliang was full of questions.
After a minute, his vision finally fully recovered.
The first thing Bai Yanliang did was look at the bedside table, and finally, he saw what the nurse was talking about; it seemed like a bottle of eye drops, new, but without any label.
Should he follow her instructions and drop it in his eyes?
At the moment, Bai Yanliang was a bit unsure.
There was too little information; he had no idea what the nurse had just dripped into his eyes or why he should use this again.
But... even though his vision had recovered, his still slightly stinging eyes told Bai Yanliang it might be best to trust her.
The nurse’s behavior didn’t seem like it was her first time, which indicated that this ’Hu Chen’ had often done this before Bai Yanliang arrived.
So, Bai Yanliang picked up the eye drops and first dropped a little on the back of his hand; there was no smell, no color.
He tried dropping a few drops.
It seemed the nurse wasn’t lying.
The cooling sensation quickly spread across his eyeball, taking away the sting and nourishing the entire eye, very comfortable.
Bai Yanliang got out of bed, but suddenly felt a chill all over.
He turned his head and saw that the window was wide open.
The cold wind from the mountain poured in, bringing some earthy and leafy fragrance.
Was it the nurse who opened the window?
Bai Yanliang pondered.
In any case, it was time to leave the ward.
Bai Yanliang walked to the door; the nurse hadn’t locked it, and with a gentle pull, the ajar door opened.
"Whoosh—"
The glaring white light suddenly flashed into Bai Yanliang’s eyes, and he instantly felt dizzy, with his eyes starting to hurt again.
Out of necessity, Bai Yanliang shielded his eyes with his hand and moved forward along the wall, avoiding the light.
Meanwhile, he felt something odd.
Why... were the lights off at night, but the spotlight turned on during the day?
The corridor wasn’t long, clearly, this mental hospital was not big.
But there was no one.
The nurse who just put drops in Bai Yanliang’s eyes was nowhere to be seen.
Doors were tightly shut on both sides of the corridor, with no sound from inside.
This was also strange; Bai Yanliang, having lived in a mental hospital for ten years, knew well that the doors of the wards all had observation windows. However... all the doors here lacked observation windows.
Soon, Bai Yanliang reached the end of the corridor.
There was no staircase going up, only stairs going down; this was the highest floor.
So, the entire hospital had only three floors.
Bai Yanliang thought for a moment, deciding to go down the stairs.
However, at the end, he found a solid iron door locking the entrance to the second floor.
This iron door completely sealed off the stairs from the third floor to the second, with no windows or ventilation holes.
But in the middle of it was a small locked door.
A glance revealed that such a door couldn’t be forced open; to access the second floor, one must first find the key.
Bai Yanliang could only return to the third floor.
He couldn’t be sure if everyone else was trapped on the third floor like him, considering there were so many unopened doors on the third floor.
Perhaps... they were deciding whether to come out?
But Bai Yanliang knew the likelihood was not high.
So far, there had been no movement on the entire third floor; perhaps... he was the only one here.
This short corridor had doors identical to Hu Chen’s room, likely also wards.
Bai Yanliang was quite brave, or rather, unable to feel fear.
So, in handling this tricky situation, he chose to open each door to confirm.
Luckily, all the room doors were ajar, saving Bai Yanliang the trouble of breaking them open.
No one, no one, no one at all...
In total, the third floor had eleven rooms. Besides Bai Yanliang’s room at the end of the corridor, the other ten rooms were opposite each other, but all were empty.
However... there was something else.
In the first room on the left of the stairway entrance, Bai Yanliang found a photograph.
It was a group photo, likely showing the entire hospital.
As expected, it was located in the mountains, more accurately, on a hillside.
Three men in white doctor coats were seated, with six nurses standing behind and a few gray-clad attendants in the distance.
They gathered for a group photo at the entrance, with the hospital’s name etched on a stone behind them, reading: Ink City Mental Hospital.
However, all the nurses in the photo wore masks.
No... the doctors wore masks too.
Why was this? Why wear masks for a group photo?
Moreover, from the body shape, Bai Yanliang immediately recognized the pudgy nurse among the six, with a face only showing a mouth.
In the photo, though mostly covered by a mask, her small eyes were exposed.
She had facial features.
At least... during the photo-taking, she was normal.
Bai Yanliang turned the photo over, noting a line of numbers in the lower left corner.
July 1, 2012.
This meant the current time was after July 1, 2012.
Bai Yanliang pondered.
Suddenly, a bell rang downstairs.
"Ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling..."
The sharp, piercing bell sound immediately reached the third floor.
Then, a woman’s loud voice emerged:
"Time to eat!"
It was the voice of the pudgy nurse.
She had spoken to Bai Yanliang last night, and he clearly remembered her voice.
Food?
Bai Yanliang put down the photo, quickly returning everything to its original state, then returned to "Hu Chen’s" room.
Unexpectedly, no one came up to the third floor to bring him food.
Bai Yanliang walked to the window and glanced down; it was indeed the third floor.
With Bai Yanliang’s skills, jumping down wouldn’t be too much of a problem, but... a few vertical steel bars had been installed on the window.
Bai Yanliang finally confirmed he was isolated.
He was confined alone on the third floor; there was absolutely no one else here.
Bai Yanliang frowned slightly; he had a very ominous suspicion.
Now all he could do was hope his guess wouldn’t come true.
