Chapter 987: Breaking Through Limits
Chapter 987: Breaking Through Limits
After Kenny Lin’s surprise attack, the spirit, finding only a late Soul Formation stage cultivator, was even more certain of an ambush.
"I’ve seen through your plan. Stop hiding—it’s useless anyway!" the spirit sneered, bypassing Kenny Lin and glancing cautiously behind him, assuming there was someone else.
Without saying a word, Kenny Lin’s cold gaze flashed in the darkness as he charged forward, a frozen killing intent in his eyes.
"He’s insane! He’s facing it head-on!" Jiae Yao exclaimed.
Dayeon Xinyue’s expression was equally tense. She had considered many strategies, but she hadn’t anticipated that he would choose to confront this spirit directly.
Wielding his natal weapon, Kenny Lin moved like a shadow in the darkness, his figure shifting constantly.
Unable to sense his aura, the spirit was forced to rely on its eyesight to track him. The dim lighting hampered its vision, slowing its reaction time.
But even a vision-obscuring obstacle couldn’t compensate for the power gap.
The Deity Transformation stage spirit barely regarded Kenny Lin, keeping its attention on the supposed hidden attacker.
Unbeknownst to it, this nonexistent third party allowed Kenny Lin the perfect opportunity. Waves of sword energy rained down, aiming for every vulnerable point in the spirit’s body.
"Mere sword lights," the spirit scoffed, its right hand turning into a fist of iron that summoned a whirlwind.
The whirlwind slammed into the surrounding walls, rebounding to shatter the incoming sword energy.
"Wait... something’s wrong!" As the fist struck out, the spirit suddenly noticed an odd sensation—the power of its attack felt weaker.
A quick inspection revealed that its energy was draining at a terrifying rate.
"What...what is this?" Fear crept into the spirit’s voice, tinged with rage. Something was clinging to its core orb and rapidly siphoning away its strength.
"Come out! Get out! Get out of me now!" It frantically clawed at its head, its power continuing to seep away uncontrollably.
Seizing the moment, Kenny Lin approached, unleashing a slash that tore through its defenses.
The spirit, enduring a mix of pain and panic, mustered another punch. This blow, however, was far weaker, managing only to force Kenny Lin back by a single step.
It didn’t dare engage him further and instantly turned around to flee.
With sword in his hand, Kenny Lin chased it down, his black cloak whipping through the air, echoing the sound of death.
"It’s like I’m watching a different fight entirely," Jiae Yao muttered, stunned by the unexpected reversal, unable to move for a long moment.
"It did have the upper hand earlier. But somehow, its power plummeted in an instant," Dayeon Xinyue said gravely.
She could guess that this was likely Kenny Lin’s hidden card, though even witnessing it, she still couldn’t determine exactly what he had done.
"Anyone who opposes him might die without even understanding how," Jiae Yao sighed in resignation. "I’d bet he could’ve handled this spirit even without us drawing it out."
Dayeon Xinyue fell silent. She realized now that their intervention might have been entirely unnecessary. He likely hadn’t felt grateful; if anything, he was probably annoyed they had risked disrupting his plan.
"Are we still following him?" Jiae Yao asked.
"Yes, we should see this through to the end," Dayeon Xinyue replied, a spark of determination flickering in her eyes as she followed the sound of battle.
Watching her friend’s expression, Jiae Yao couldn’t help but marvel. It was rare for Dayeon Xinyue to seem this restless and unwilling to back down.
It seemed Kenny Lin was having more and more of an impact on her—and whether that was good or bad, only time would tell.
"So... did you break through?"
In the Jade Celestial Harmony Hall, a few halls away from the Heavenly Flames Hall, Amalia and Jinhwa Hou worked in silent coordination to take down one purple spirit after another. In less than half a day, they had collected seven or eight orbs from the Soul Formation stage spirit, along with a few Nascent Soul stage spirit.
"I’ve broken through. What about the rest of you?" Amalia asked, wiping her blade after successfully advancing to the Soul Formation early stage, thanks to the power within the orbs.
Since this was a collective effort, everyone had received some orbs. Aside from Jinhwa Hou, who was still preparing for his own breakthrough to the Peak of the Soulf Formation stage, the rest of the group had also progressed in their cultivation.
"We’ve only been in the Immortal Palace for a few days, and we’re already seeing breakthroughs one after another. If only we could stay here longer," Sechang Dai remarked wistfully.
"That kind of luck isn’t possible. Once time is up, we’ll be thrown out of here, whether we want to leave or not," Renshu Chang said with a shake of his head.
"It’s such a pity. This place not only offers intense battles but also rewards you with strength-boosting energy after each fight—a double benefit," Sechang Dai continued.
"There’s no such thing as easy power. Every shortcut has its limits," Jinhwa Hou said with a yawn, feeling the urge for a drink again.
"How much longer until your breakthrough?" Amalia asked, lightly brushing her hand over her blade.
"I feel I still need a bit more intensity," Jinhwa Hou said, his demeanor instantly serious.
Right now, they could defeat one or two Soul Formation stage spirits with ease. But because these battles offered no real challenge, he was unable to release that pent-up drive, making it difficult to find his breakthrough opportunity.
"I remember each hall in the Immortal Palace is guarded by a Deity Transformation stage spirit. We’ve nearly cleared out all the Soul Formation stage spirits in this Celestial Harmony Hall," Amalia observed.
Three pairs of eyes turned to her. Jinhwa Hou’s eyes lit up. "You mean, we should go find this Deity Transformation stage spirit?"
"We could try, but we’ll need at least a fifty percent chance of success before we engage."
"I’d say I’ve got a fifty percent chance," Jinhwa Hou added after a moment, "when I’m fighting alone, of course."
