Chapter 941: The Crimson Due
Chapter 941: The Crimson Due
"Given their bloodthirsty nature, why hasn’t anyone been able to catch them in the act?" Amalia asked, frowning.
Jinhwa Hou, who had been listening in, leaned closer and answered, "They’re very cunning. We suspect they handle human cultivators and devils differently."
Seongwoo Jin shot him a glare. "Why are you finishing my thoughts?"
Jinhwa Hou rolled his eyes.
"How so?" Amalia asked, ignoring the exchange.
"That’s the cleverness of the Demonic Night Palace," Jinhwa Hou explained. "If torturing devils is their pastime, then killing human cultivators is methodical, they do it quickly and cleanly. This is why we’ve never been able to catch them in the act."
"They may seem impulsive and cruel with devils, but they possess remarkable self-control."
"With a temperament like that, can they really keep it up long-term?" Amalia mused, finding it hard to imagine how such a conflicted person had made it so far.
"So, torturing devils is a great outlet for them," Jinhwa Hou shrugged. "They can test out all the ideas they can’t use on human cultivators. And if anyone tries to stop them, they’ll just accuse them of being in league with the devils."
Amalia glanced over at Kenny Lin in the center of the battle circle. "Is that why choosing Dongjian Zhao would be a mistake?"
Seongwoo Jin replied, "Not exactly, but avoiding Dongjian Zhao is definitely the safest choice. Unlike Seonho Ming, he fights recklessly and is extremely cunning. Beating him isn’t easy."
"So, when facing Dongjian Zhao, the best strategy is to end things quickly?" Amalia’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"Exactly. Dongjian Zhao knows this well, so he often drags things out. He’ll wear down his opponents until they’re exhausted. Those he can kill, he kills on the spot; and those he can’t kill, he leaves with scars they won’t forget."
"Martial Uncle’s cultivation level is lower than his, and his spiritual energy isn’t as deep. A swift battle would be his best strategy."
As they spoke, Dongjian Zhao spoke up in the center of the arena.
"You chose me; you must have heard of my reputation. Your fellow sect members probably told you that I’m best dealt with in a quick battle, didn’t they?" Dongjian Zhao smirked, his crimson lips curling.
Kenny Lin’s expression grew serious. "My fellow sect members? I don’t have many. Only one came with me today, and he didn’t know I’d choose you—and wouldn’t have said anything if he did."
This unexpected answer left Dongjian Zhao momentarily stunned. What was this guy talking about?
The disciples of the Green Lotus Sect exchanged bemused looks. Could Martial Uncle Kenny Lin be referring to the Sixth Elder as his "fellow sect member"?
Instinctively, they glanced over at the Sixth Elder, who was watching the scene with a pleased smile, showing no sign of displeasure. Technically speaking, they were from the same generation, so it wasn’t wrong to call him a fellow sect member.
Dongjian Zhao dropped the topic. "I’ll give you a choice: hand over the Gold Token, and I’ll let you go. Refuse, and I won’t be as merciful as Seonho Ming."
"To be honest, I haven’t had much action today, and my hands are itching. This competition doesn’t forbid killing. If your elders don’t step in fast enough, you could die for nothing."
"Not necessarily. You could be the one to die," Kenny Lin replied, clenching his empty hand briefly before relaxing again. He didn’t notice Dongjian Zhao’s brief smile.
Dongjian Zhao thrived on his enemy’s reactions, enjoying every moment of their fear. No subtle movement could escape his watchful eyes.
"It seems you can’t make a decision, so I’ll help you."
Dongjian Zhao was in no rush to end the fight. Seeing the Green Lotus Sect disciple being humiliated was, after all, a satisfying experience for him.
With a glance at the elder from the Demonic Night Palace, who showed no reaction, Dongjian Zhao knew he had permission.
"Crimson Star Emperor Blade!" he roared, his body shooting forward like a bolt of thunder as he charged toward Kenny Lin, bringing his blade down with lethal force.
Kenny Lin pushed his speed to the limit, but against Dongjian Zhao’s full strength, he could only barely raise his sword to block it.
With a heavy clash, the impact sent him flying backward, nearly losing his grip on his sword. Dongjian Zhao pressed his advantage, each swing landing with a thunderous force on Kenny Lin’s blade. What Kenny Lin had once considered his strength now seemed almost ineffective in close range against this relentless assault.
"I’ve found your weakness," Dongjian Zhao sneered as he closed in with a sinister smile, unleashing blow after blow. Kenny Lin’s face had already turned a shade paler after enduring a dozen strikes.
"Is that so? The fight’s not over yet," he gritted out, stubbornly holding his ground.
Dongjian Zhao laughed heartily. "Indeed, the fight’s far from over. Don’t worry—this is just the beginning. The real fun is yet to come!"
Noticing his opponent’s limited skill in close combat, Dongjian Zhao didn’t give Kenny Lin a chance to widen the distance between them. He preferred fighting up close, as it allowed him to act without restraint and inflict lasting scars.
"Oh, by the way, what did your friend think of that move you used against Jiheon Yang? You can try it on me, too," he taunted, swinging his blade with a grin. "Shame you’re not wearing white robes—otherwise, it would make the blood look so much prettier."
"How could you not wear white robes? Maybe we should pause so you can change?" Dongjian Zhao continued with a smirk, feigning seriousness.
"Fine, step back, then," Kenny Lin replied just as seriously.
Dongjian Zhao paused, momentarily taken aback. He’d only been toying with Kenny Lin and hadn’t expected such a response. He sneered, "So naive! Very well, I’ll step back."
But instead of retreating, he lunged forward.
"You’re copying her, aren’t you? Engaging me in close combat battle to keep me from using my true strength?" Kenny Lin murmured, his voice barely audible.
