Chapter 456: The End Of The War (Part 2)

Amalia didn’t find the situation particularly encouraging.

With humanity facing potential extinction, internal strife only exacerbates the risk and sows deeper seeds of danger.

"This time, too many strong spiritual cultivators died in Fruit City No. 2. There is much to be done," Ruben Lin sighed.

"If no family is willing to work with the Yoder family, is the government going to have them guard a city alone? That would be a waste of their abilities," Amalia said.

"The Lin, Zhao, and Rodriguez families combined don’t have as many people as the Yoder family. The government would never allow them to sit idly by while other strong spiritual cultivators fight on the front lines, but they also can’t let them guard a city alone."

The flaws of the Yoder family were exposed through this incident at Fruit City No. 2.

If they were left to guard a city by themselves and failed, resulting in the city’s breach, it would be a disaster.

This is a serious matter, so even without input from the Zhao family, the government will undoubtedly take action.

"Grandfather is inside; you should go in," Ruben Lin said, as he still had work to do.

Tony Lin and Cassandra Lin had left, and the others had gone to support Fruit City No. 2, so there were few available hands in City No. 1.

Thanks to their recent victory, the aftermath was easier to handle.

Amalia watched him rush off and elbowed Kenny Lin, "Look at your nephew and then at yourself. Don’t you feel even a little guilty?"

Compared to the busy Ruben Lin, Kenny Lin was far too idle.

"This is the price of power," Kenny Lin said without a hint of remorse.

Amalia was speechless, "If that’s the price, I’m sure many people would willingly pay it."

Kenny Lin said, "So, I’m just a figurehead."

"You’ve got a point," Amalia, also in a similar position, felt she didn’t have much room to argue, so she let the subject drop and pushed the door open to enter.

Ruben Lin’s remark about "nursing a broken heart" was an exaggeration; Mr. Lin was doing well and seemed to be on a call with someone.

When they entered, he gestured for them to wait a moment and hung up the call shortly after.

"Cassandra and the others have left. Did you not see them off?" Mr. Lin asked with a smile.

Amalia felt that his gaze was overly kind, "Yes, we did. I actually came here with a question for you."

"Don’t call me ’you.’ Call me Dad, just like Kenny does," Mr. Lin continued to smile warmly.

Amalia paused, "..."

Amalia took out a box and got straight to the point, "This is what I wanted to ask you about."

Mr. Lin’s smile immediately disappeared, and his expression became serious as he asked, "Where did you get this?"

"From a high-level mutated creature lair."

"You came to ask me about it, so you must have some suspicions. It’s true, this matter can’t be hidden for long," Mr. Lin sighed.

Amalia leaned in attentively.

Mr. Lin was one of the top experts in Fruit Country; even if the government was hiding something, they couldn’t hide it from him.

Asking him was the best choice.

Mr. Lin opened the box to reveal a small piece of black crystal, "This box is made of meteorite, crafted by the mutated creatures. Meteorite is one of the materials that appeared on Earth alongside black fragments, and it’s the only material that can isolate the aura of the black fragments."

"What is the origin of these black fragments?" Amalia asked.

"We don’t know for sure, but we can confirm they are extraterrestrial in origin. The mutations on Earth are closely linked to them, and these shards have a positive impact only on mutated creatures."

Amalia noticed Mr. Lin’s wording was unusual, "Are you implying that they have an impact on humans too, but not a positive one?"

"That’s right. Prolonged contact with humans also leads to mutations, but not towards strength—rather, they become deformed. Mutated creatures, however, have a chance to grow stronger."

"When the government first obtained a black fragment, they began researching it. Over time, as they collected more, they made a significant discovery."

"What discovery?"

"These shards seem to have once been part of a whole, but the black fragments are extremely durable, and no method on Earth can break them. So we suspect they were already fragmented before arriving on Earth."

"The same black fragments are still abundant, especially beneath the central disaster zone. They might even be directly in the hands of the most powerful mutated creature in the central disaster zone. If we continue to let it absorb the energy of the black fragments, one day it may become strong enough to be invincible to humans."

As Mr. Lin spoke, his expression grew graver.

Humanity was indeed approaching a moment of life or death.

Although Amalia had already suspected some of this, hearing it confirmed left her with a heavy heart.

The situation was much worse than he had anticipated.

He had thought Earth would be destroyed in about a hundred years, but now it seemed it could happen in mere decades.

However, Amalia questioned whether even a few decades were left.

"Since the government has been researching this for years, haven’t they found any solutions?" he asked.

If they had found a solution, Earth’s future wouldn’t be doomed.

As expected, Mr. Lin shook his head, "The government has sent people to investigate the depths of the central disaster zone, but they could never get close enough."

"What do you mean by ’never get close enough’?"

"The powerful mutated creature has been guarding the depths of the central disaster zone. If we are not mistaken, it should be near the remaining black fragments," Mr. Lin said.

Amalia noticed a discrepancy in the explanation, "These black fragments are so small; is the whole crystal very large? Is that why the mutated creature can’t move it?"

Mr. Lin nodded approvingly at his perceptiveness, "Whether the original crystal is large or not, one thing is certain—the mutated creature cannot move it. I’ve ventured deep with two other Tier 1 spiritual cultivators multiple times to explore, and we found one problem: the guarding mutated creature seems unable to leave a specific area. We suspect that specific area is where the original black fragment is located, but..."
