Chapter 1037: The Breach of the Forbidden Grounds
"Yes, my lord. I’ll make another attempt," the subordinate replied before rushing back to relay orders to a group of devils.
With a single command, hundreds of devil unleashed their combined attacks. Countless brilliant strikes surged forward, slamming into a seemingly empty part of the sky.
The strikes didn’t pass through the void but collided with something solid, causing the air to ripple violently. For half a minute, the trembling persisted, and the ripples became more pronounced.
Seeing that their efforts were effective, a group of twenty devils stepped forward from the main group.
These devil, their expressions devoid of emotion, all performed the same grim action.
They self-destructed.
Their bodies exploded midair, transforming into thick clouds of blood-colored mist that were instantly absorbed by a massive black entity below.
This entity was enormous, amorphous, and pitch-black. Its soft, boneless form didn’t resemble any ordinary living creature. After devouring the power of the twenty devil, the strange black being grew even stronger, writhing with increased vigor.
"Feed it again," came the cold voice of the devil lord.
Another group of devils stepped forward, only to meet the same fate. When they failed, yet another group followed. This continued until the black entity was finally satiated. It squirmed and crawled its way up to the shimmering void above.
The black being slowly spread itself across the transparent membrane in the void, causing it to radiate a blinding light.
"It’s working!" the Devil Leader exclaimed in delight.
The void quaked, and the surrounding space began to tremble violently.
Within the forbidden grounds, Zhar’khaen and Vryss’laar suddenly sensed that something was amiss. Both of them immediately rushed out from a grand hall, raising their heads to see that the usually transparent barrier was glowing, with streams of light on its surface converging toward one point.
"This is bad! Someone is draining the power of the forbidden ground’s barrier," Zhar’khaen exclaimed, his face turning pale.
"How could the barrier of the forbidden grounds be discovered? It’s been hidden here for countless years. And what kind of entity can absorb the power of the barrier?" Vryss’laar asked in shock.
"I don’t know, but the result is clear—our forbidden grounds have been exposed. The only question is whether it’s humans or the devil. I’ll notify Gor’kan immediately," Zhar’khaen replied, turning and running back into the hall.
Passing through the grand hall, he reached the rear where Gor’kan was guarding a small doorway.
"I seem to have sensed something wrong with the barrier. What’s happening outside?"
Before Zhar’khaen could get close, Gor’kan opened his eyes and spoke first.
"A major event has occurred. Someone is attacking the forbidden barrier, and its power seems to be draining. If it were just an ordinary assault, this wouldn’t happen," Zhar’khaen said urgently.
"Let’s go check it out," Gor’kan replied without hesitation.
"What about the Young Lord? When will they emerge?" Zhar’khaen asked, glancing toward the small doorway.
"The Young Lord is still inside. Don’t worry; even if the forbidden grounds are breached, the inheritance grounds were personally sealed by the Beast God. It won’t be easy for outsiders to break through," Gor’kan replied, striding outside.
"Alright," Zhar’khaen nodded. If the forbidden grounds were breached, this would be their only hope.
"You’re finally back! In just this short time, the barrier’s glow has dimmed significantly compared to before," Vryss’laar said anxiously as they arrived.
Gor’kan looked up at the sky, his expression grim as he observed the rapidly diminishing energy. "This doesn’t look like the work of humans."
"Are you suggesting devil?" Zhar’khaen’s expression darkened. "It could very well be. When I was outside before, I spotted a devil about ten miles away. At the time, I thought it had accidentally wandered in."
"Why didn’t you mention this earlier?" Gor’kan asked with a frown.
"That devil was killed by me on the spot! Without you bringing it up, I wouldn’t have made the connection. Who would have thought it was just bait?" Zhar’khaen replied, visibly frustrated with himself.
"Forget it. There’s no use dwelling on this now. Let’s focus on resolving the issue," Vryss’laar interjected quickly. "Gor’kan, bring out the Sky Viewing Mirror. We can confirm if it’s the devil."
Taking a deep breath, Gor’kan retrieved the Sky Viewing Mirror. After dripping a single drop of blood onto it, he threw it into the air, where it instantly expanded dozens of times in size.
A massive black, viscous entity occupied most of the Sky Viewing Mirror’s surface, sprawled atop the forbidden grounds’ barrier. Its immense body wriggled ceaselessly, spreading across the shimmering membrane.
Zhar’khaen immediately recoiled in disgust. "What is that revolting thing?"
Vryss’laar’s face paled visibly. "So many... so many eyes."
Though he didn’t suffer from trypophobia, the sight of countless eyes scattered across the creature’s body, twitching erratically, sent shivers down his spine. He turned away, unnerved by the grotesque image.
"This abomination shouldn’t exist naturally," Gor’kan said gravely, adjusting the Sky Viewing Mirror. As the mirror shifted, they spotted bluish bloodstains and scattered remnants of limbs smeared across the creature’s body.
"These devils must have spent a long time preparing for this. They’re entirely convinced we’re here," Gor’kan said with a heavy voice.
"But why? We rarely leave the forbidden grounds. How could they have found this place?" Zhar’khaen asked, forcing himself to look away from the monstrous entity and instead focus on the fragments of limbs on the ground. Strangely, the sight of the broken remains brought his a sense of relief compared to the nightmarish creature.
Gor’kan shook his head. "I don’t know. We believed we left no trace of our presence, but perhaps what seems flawless to us might not be to others."
He continued rotating the mirror, scanning the surrounding area. Besides the devils, there was no trace of human cultivators.
"It seems this time only the devils have discovered us. If this continues, the forbidden grounds barrier will be breached soon, and we’ll be in deep trouble," Gor’kan warned.
"But the barrier was created by the elders of the clan all those years ago. How could it falter?" Zhar’khaen questioned, his voice tinged with disbelief.
