Chapter 1007: Treasure Box (Part 2)

"Watch this!" Raon Lai from the Demonic Night Sect shouted confidently. As the box reached his vicinity, he made his move.

Even Amalia glanced over, as this was the first time anyone had attempted to capture one of the boxes. Everyone was curious about what would happen.

Raon Lai’s hand transformed into a massive shadowy claw, which grasped the black box without hesitation.

He glanced around smugly, as if to bask in the envy of others, but his expression quickly changed. Letting out a strained cry, his face turned red.

He couldn’t lift the box immediately, and with its own momentum aiding it, the box easily broke free from his grasp and continued flowing downstream.

Having failed so publicly, Raon Lai was humiliated. Dongjian Zhao shot him a sharp glare, his disappointment was palpable. What a disgrace—he couldn’t even manage to grab a single box.

To make matters worse, the next cultivator learned from Raon Lai’s failure. Without hesitation or wasted movements, they successfully secured the box.

The triumphant individual was a disciple from the Eternal One Sect. They had anticipated that some boxes might occasionally reverse course and float back upstream, so they deliberately stationed people at the rear for moments like this.

"This river really isn’t friendly to those with stronger abilities," Kenny Lin observed suddenly after witnessing the scene.

Amalia turned to him. "What do you mean, not friendly?"

"Clearly, the river flows downward, and the boxes should follow the current. But some manage to flow upstream instead," Kenny Lin muttered, visibly displeased. If any of those boxes came near him, he would snatch them all, leaving nothing for anyone else.

"It’s strange. I can’t figure out the mechanism behind it," Amalia replied, equally baffled.

At that moment, the Eternal One Sect disciple who had secured a box earlier opened it amidst a sea of envious stares.

The box wasn’t difficult to open. As its lid came off, a faint glow escaped from within.

Inside lay a few top-grade spirit stones.

The disciple’s expression froze. "Why are these just spirit stones?"

He turned the box over, examining it thoroughly. There were no hidden compartments, and the box wasn’t large—its contents were plain to see.

"Let’s move on," Jirandal Tang said as he withdrew his gaze and addressed the others.

"It seems that the dimmer the glow of the box, the more ordinary its contents," Taeseon Lei observed.

"That’s likely the case, but we need to grab a few more boxes to confirm," Eunbyeol Ling chimed in as she followed closely behind them.

Amalia pressed forward, her hands pushing against the flow of the river as she ascended, her pace unbroken. She cast a glance at Kenny Lin, whose expression betrayed his boredom, and teased, "Are you short on spirit stones now?"

"Who knows? This river is proving unreliable. A few spirit stones packed in a box? What a joke," Kenny Lin replied, his disappointment evident.

"That’s to be expected. Look at the sheer number of glowing boxes up there—it’s unlikely they all contain treasures. But I think I’ve figured out why some boxes float downstream. Did you notice? The ones that flow back have dimmer glows and are easier to grab."

"You mean the less valuable the item, the easier it is to retrieve?" Kenny Lin asked thoughtfully.

Amalia nodded, her tone teasing. "Don’t tell me you plan to toss any box you find too easy to grab."

"Not a chance. Like I’d let someone else have even a crumb," Kenny Lin replied with a grin, his confidence unshaken.

"At least you know yourself well," Amalia quipped.

She glanced back at the crowd below. More people were catching on to the pattern and were pushing themselves harder to climb the river.

Realizing that the upstream boxes likely held greater treasures, the allure of those boxes intensified. The crowd’s bloodshot eyes fixated on their glowing targets with almost desperate determination.

As they climbed higher, the pull at the river’s base grew stronger. Some cultivators, overwhelmed by the strain, were forced to stop and rest, their envious gazes fixed on Amalia and Kenny Lin, who were the first to approach one of the glowing boxes.

The black box floated quietly atop the energy river, occasionally rocking gently with the ripples.

Its glow wasn’t the brightest, but it was certainly more radiant than the boxes that had drifted downstream.

Without hesitation, Kenny Lin swung his sword. The sword’s gleam struck directly at the box on the river’s surface.

"Is this guy stupid? Who cuts directly at a box? Doesn’t he worry about damaging the treasure inside?"

Such thoughts ran through the minds of those watching the scene unfold.

However, the results proved that the boxes in the river were made from materials strong enough to withstand such treatment.

The sword’s strike sent the box flying. Amalia seized the opportunity and swiftly captured the airborne box.

Their teamwork was seamless, and they effortlessly secured the box.

The box bore no sword marks, save for a faint white streak, which vanished after a moment. These boxes seemed to be crafted from an exceptionally unique material.

"Let’s see what’s inside," Kenny Lin said as he sheathed his sword.

Amalia ran her fingers along the edge of the box. There was no lock, and it opened with ease.

The others immediately craned their necks, eager to see what the box contained.

Amalia, however, deliberately turned the box away from their view. She took one quick glance inside before closing it again, ensuring no one else could see its contents.

"Let’s keep moving forward," she said.

Jirandal Tang and his group didn’t bother asking what was in the box. They figured they’d find out once they captured a box of their own. Seeing its contents wouldn’t make it theirs, so they didn’t dwell on it.

But Amalia’s concealment only provoked the others behind them. They were convinced that whatever she had obtained must be valuable; otherwise, why would she hide it?

Amalia and Kenny Lin continued their climb. By this point, every step forward was a struggle.

Just then, a loud noise erupted from behind them.

A violent gust of wind swept through, sending ripples across the space around them.
