Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl -
Chapter 400 - 397: Wife Has Too Many Friends, What Can Bao Bao Do?
Er Niu lay by the radiator, looking a bit melancholic.
Chen Ying had just gone to check on the three babies, who were sleeping soundly, smacking their little mouths, looking as adorable as little caterpillars.
Upon returning to her room, she, as usual, refilled the dog wet nurse's food and water before sitting down cross-legged in front of Er Niu.
"There's nothing to worry about, Er Niu. Once Si Zai's illness is cured, I'll have them bring him back."
Er Niu turned her head away without making a sound, the corners of her eyes slightly moist.
Ding Wen and Sun Qihai were outside unloading supplies, mainly nutritional products prepared for the two animal mothers and their cubs, along with some dog and cat toys donated by fans.
Through the door and windows, Ding Wen glanced inside and asked Sun Qihai.
"After sending Si Zai away, does Er Niu seem a bit unhappy?"
"Of course. Er Niu is a very sensitive mother. Losing one of her children, she's bound to feel upset. But it's all up to Brother Ying to see if he can persuade her."
Chen Ying lay down following the direction of the radiator and pulled Er Niu into her embrace.
The dog wet nurse quietly peeked out half her face from the doghouse, secretly watching what the person and the lynx were doing.
"Er Niu, it's okay, you've been a good mother already. Look at how well the other three babies are growing."
"Whimper, but there's still a baby that's unwell. Is it because I haven't eaten enough?"
"Silly girl." Chen Ying brought her face closer and snuggled against her cheek for a moment, "Even the strongest mother can't guarantee all her children will be healthy. Even in humans, there are situations where newborns cannot be saved from various illnesses."
"Woof, woof, I gave birth to seven, but only three have survived."
The mother dog couldn't help but interject.
"It was too cold. I couldn't find a proper place and gave birth in a corner. Two died right after birth, and two more froze to death. If it weren't for the two-legged beast saving us, the remaining three might not have survived either."
The dog wet nurse spoke in a very calm tone, "In my days of wandering, I've seen many cubs that died shortly after being born. Dogs, cats, and other stray animals. If the weather is too bad, even adult dogs can die."
"Ow?" Er Niu was unaware of this, having gone through hardships in the past two years, but having had a fairly good life since meeting Chen Ying, nor had any big cats told her such things.
The dog wet nurse approached Er Niu for the first time.
She sniffed Er Niu's body and licked her forehead.
"It's okay, you're very lucky, your children are still alive. Just take good care of them, there's nothing else we can do."
She was a very perceptive mother dog, her gaze filled with wisdom and tranquility.
Er Niu seemed to feel a bit better, propping up her head and gently nudging the mother dog.
At noon, it was time for the two mothers to watch over their children as they took big naps.
Chen Ying asked Ding Wen and Sun Qihai to keep an eye on the monitors in the station while she planned to ride out and have a look around the area.
After all, the great migration of Tibetan antelope was approaching, and even though this wasn't a main migration route for them, no one knew if any lost antelope would pass by here.
Furthermore, other animals on the wilderness would also temporarily avoid their onslaught, yielding certain vital pathways to those frantically rushing antelope mothers.
After riding more than three kilometers, Chen Ying pulled out her binoculars to survey the surroundings.
Suddenly, he noticed what seemed to be an injured animal in the lakeside bushes.
Upon approaching on horseback, he found a young gazelle that couldn't stand up.
The cub must have been born only a couple of days ago and was extremely weak from hunger.
Its mother was nowhere nearby, nor was there any sign of a gazelle herd in the vicinity.
Dismounting, Chen Ying ran over to check the young gazelle's condition and found that it had congenital bone problems in its legs, having fractured both forelimbs while learning to stand up after birth.
Such a cub, unable to stand and run, could only be reluctantly abandoned by its mother.
Chen Ying took out a small blanket from his bag, wrapped the gazelle cub in it, and scooped it up onto his horse to head back.
Fortunately, it wasn't cold now, and the wood and cow dung stacked in the straw shed were laid with dry grass, perfect for treating the young gazelle.
Ding Wen came over to help and quickly set both of the young gazelle's forelimbs.
Supported by the brace, the young gazelle managed to stand up, although unsteadily and with still feeble hind legs.
Letting Ding Wen assist, Chen Ying went to get some formula for the cub.
Soon, after downing a bottle of formula, the young gazelle regained some strength and began to cling to Ding Wen.
Er Niu quietly followed Chen Ying over and poked her head through to take a look, her eyes filled with curiosity.
"Ow? Is this snack prepared for me?"
Er Niu wanted to say, "This is too small; it's hardly enough to eat."
When the yellow lamb cub sensed Er Niu's breath, it backed away in fright, pressing its rear against the wall and trembling fiercely.
Chen Ying grabbed Er Niu's head and dragged her outside.
"Stop it. This isn't for you to eat; it's a cub I worked hard to save."
Er Niu followed Chen Ying's pull and walked slowly, whining softly as she broke free from his restraint.
"I'm going hunting, you help me keep an eye on the child."
"Where's its dad?"
"He might have gone to catch sheep," Er Niu's gaze dodged slightly, "I won't go catch sheep; I'll go catch rabbits."
"It's okay, just do what you have to do and eat whatever you should. Just don't lay a hand on the animals in the station."
Er Niu immediately perked up and dashed out with a sprint.
After it left, the Dog Wet Nurse poked her head out to take a look, then turned back, picking up all five of her pups and letting them crawl around the room.
Puppies are a lot more lively. The Little Fox cub was noticeably smaller, didn't want to move after eating, and kept on sleeping wherever its foster mother placed it, closing its eyes.
The Dog Wet Nurse licked the fur of the two fox cubs and cleaned them. Then she too lay down, closed her eyes, and rested.
Chen Ying fetched the padding from the doghouse, shook it clean on barren ground, and laid it on a wooden frame to dry, planning to put it back later.
Ding Wen had planned to stay here for a few more days, but today, the arrival of a yellow lamb cub made it clear that the rest stop was not suitable for fostering an injured lamb. It had to be sent to the River Source Rescue Center.
The Protection Station was busy with the mission to protect Tibetan antelope and couldn't spare the attention to care for the lamb cub.
Better sooner than later.
Ding Wen cleaned the back of his car, laid down some straw, put the lamb cub in, locked the door, and drove off.
He had never been to this side before. He said goodbye to Chen Ying this time and decided to go help patrol at Yin Li's station after delivering the yellow lamb back to the River Source Rescue Center.
He wasn't used to the environment and climate of the uninhabited area, but he could help guide tourists on the national road to maintain order.
After sending Ding Wen away, Sun Qihai continued to watch the monitor. In the den, the three Snow Leopard cubs were playing stacker, and the unlucky sister was being pressed underneath by two brothers, opening its mouth for help.
Unfortunately, no matter how loudly it called, no one could lend a paw to help.
The Snow Leopard returned first, about two hours later.
Belly round from eating, it brought back a half-grown wild donkey.
It watched outside the den for a while, dropped the wild donkey next to it, then went to sleep in the adjacent animal shed.
The adjacent shed hadn't been particularly arranged before, but after the Snow Leopard came to protect Er Niu and her child, Chen Ying managed to use stones, wood, leftover insulation boards, and waterproof canvas to construct a makeshift den.
Modeled after a rock crevice, there was a layer of dry grass and thin twigs inside.
The Snow Leopard was quite satisfied.
The den might not be as large as its previous one, but it was warm and comfortable for sleeping.
Well-fed and watered, the Snow Leopard soon fell into a deep sleep.
Not long after, Er Niu returned as well.
Judging by the roundness of its belly, it didn't eat as much as the Snow Leopard did, but it definitely had a full meal.
Upon seeing the wild donkey, it sniffed a bit and, recognizing that the Snow Leopard had left it behind, bit the prey's neck, intent on dragging the wild donkey out to treat its friends.
Lying elegantly in the grass twenty meters away, a grey and white Lynx yawned lazily and stood up to greet Er Niu... and the prey it brought.
"Where did you drag this from?"
Clearly, they had been hunting together earlier; how could it have acquired a piece of meat just by coming back?
The grey and white Lynx watched Er Niu struggle to drag the meat closer, warily lifting its head toward what followed Er Niu.
The Snow Leopard in its sleep caught a scent that didn't belong here, something it felt it had smelled before, but it couldn't pose any threat to itself.
Initially planning to keep sleeping, it suddenly remembered the wife and fragile child next door, so slight they could be swatted dead with a palm. It forced itself awake, crawled out of the den, wanting to see which creature dared to disturb its wife and child.
A familiar grey and white shape appeared in the Snow Leopard's vision. It thought for a while before it could dig up the owner of the shadow from some corner of its memory.
Oh, it was the wife's interspecies best friend.
The term "best friend" was what Er Niu had told it. Its own best friend was a golden red Lynx, whose territory was not here and whom it met while people-watching with the Two-legged beast.
The Snow Leopard didn't understand, but that didn't interfere with its knowing this creature wouldn't hurt the wife.
But to be on the safe side, it still leaped onto a high wooden platform, dozing while keeping a wary eye on any animals that came close to its helpless and unable-to-fend-for-themselves offspring.
