Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl -
Chapter 387 - 385: Bro, Do You Still Want a Wife or Not?
It was past one in the morning when the walkie-talkie suddenly came alive, giving Chen Ying and Shu Nan a jolt.
"Brother Ying, Brother Nan, need help."
The person on the other end was panting, sounding almost like they were out of breath as they spoke those few simple words.
"The Water Deer's first baby has been born, but there's a Giant Panda nearby wanting to kill the little fawn, and there are a few Clouded Leopards around."
Little Zhang's voice trembled, "My colleague and I have been guarding here at Water Bay. My colleague tried to lure the Giant Panda away with bamboo, but it seems to have enraged the bear."
Chen Ying's expression changed, and he jumped up ready to rush over.
The young Veterinarian who wished to follow was pushed back by him.
"You stay here and watch the Large Clouded Leopard, Brother Nan will go find Xiong Da and ask for help. I will go over first and see the situation."
If there was anyone here who could stop the Giant Panda, it would have to be Chen Ying.
A few minutes later, Xiong Youming arrived with two companions following behind Shu Nan, rushing toward the place where the Water Deer was giving birth.
When Chen Ying arrived, he saw the Giant Panda preparing to climb a tree.
A man clung tightly to the branches, his face deathly pale.
The sudden light shone on him, causing him to instinctively close his eyes and flinch.
The Giant Panda at the base of the tree revealed a fierce look, having already climbed more than a meter high.
What kind of wisdom thinks of climbing a tree for safety? Don't they know pandas practically live up trees?
Chen Ying raced over, grabbed the Giant Panda's hind legs, and pulled him down. Of course, he was ready in case the panda tried to kick him; he'd just fall back if it did.
"Woof, woof, woof, woof~~" the Giant Panda was so flustered it spoke with a childlike tone.
"Big Brother, Big Brother, come down first. Why so angry? You tell me, I'll beat him up for you."
When people fight, it's just for show, but when a bear hits, someone might end up as packed meat.
With a person hanging on its leg, the Giant Panda trembled with rage and couldn't climb up. Finally, it came down.
Chen Ying hastily stuffed two pieces of bamboo he had conveniently broken off along the way into its mouth.
"Bro, eat some bamboo shoots, cool down, I'll beat him up for you."
He led the Giant Panda to sit down nearby, then signaled to the guy in the tree to quickly jump down and run far away.
The man complied, landing on wobbly legs and nearly crawling away.
Chen Ying approached under the guise of hitting him, supporting and dragging him up the slope.
Seeing the Giant Panda getting up and walking toward him, Chen Ying confronted him again, pulling another bamboo shoot from his waist pack.
The Giant Panda took it and curiously reached for Chen Ying's waist pack, wanting to see what it was that kept producing bamboo shoots.
"No more, bro, really none left. If you like, I'll go with you to eat."
"I'm telling you, I even saw a flock of wild fowl nesting this evening; wanna try something different?"
At such times, don't mention whether it's illegal or not, it's second nation eating first nation, so long as it's not through his hands.
Moreover, in recent years, with fields reverting back to forests, wild fowl have started to proliferate to the point of becoming bothersome, soon to be kicked off the protected species list just like wild pigs.
Besides, whether his diversion works also depends on whether the Giant Panda can catch them. Did they think it was as proficient in hunting fowl as the Clouded Leopards?
Having led the Giant Panda away from the riverside thickets, Chen Ying radioed Little Zhang to check in on the situation.
"My colleague has caught his breath. That little Water Deer seems to be doing alright. The deer herd has moved to a denser forest further downstream. Where my colleague and I are camping is also over there."
They had safely relocated, and Chen Ying breathed a sigh of relief, planning to leave.
But the Giant Panda refused to let people go, hooking Chen Ying's waist pack, wanting more bamboo shoots.
"You couldn't get any lazier!" Chen Ying laughed in frustration, but there was no helping it, he still needed to assist since it was the boss after all.
With the light helping, it was relatively easy to find more bamboo shoots, and he chopped a few fresh green bamboo sticks, carrying them over to the Giant Panda.
But during this hustle, Chen Ying realized that there weren't many bamboo shoots left in this patch that suited its taste, and the bamboo wouldn't last much longer.
Was he planning to change locations to eat or did he intend to continue targeting the Water Deer?
The turning point came the following evening.
Xiong Youming and his team using the internal system had confirmed the range of this type of bamboo,
In a ravine about twenty-plus kilometers from the campsite, there was a bamboo forest covering an area of about seven to eight acres, the same variety as this small bamboo forest.
They wanted to guide the Giant Panda there to see if, as Chen Ying speculated, it was mostly eating meat due to being overly picky.
With the Veterinarian taking care of the Large Clouded Leopard, Chen Ying agreed to assist Xiong Youming and others in guiding the Giant Panda's relocation.
Shu Nan stayed behind with the Veterinarian, and they could still contact Little Zhang via walkie-talkie to ensure safety.
Though Shu Nan wasn't seasoned in outdoor activities, the Veterinarian had two years of experience in field rescues. As for Little Zhang and his team, they were even more dependable and could meet up if necessary.
Before leaving, Chen Ying specifically took a moment to instruct the four Clouded Leopards not to get too close to the campsite, fearing they might scare someone.
As for the Leopard Brothers, they had almost become his personal accessories, not willing to leave even with their wariness of the Giant Panda.
Twenty kilometers took them a whole day.
During that time, Xiong Youming and his team even dug up a few bamboo shoots from there to feed the Giant Panda, curious to know if there was a difference between bamboos from the two locations.
It seemed okay; the Giant Panda was a bit picky about the bamboo shoots they dug up, eating only two-thirds of them and casually tossing aside the tops.
The Leopard Brothers went hunting and dragged back two wild chickens. He snatched one and plucked its feathers rudely with his claws before finally getting annoyed at the feathers, tearing off the skin, and eating the meat and small bones.
After he finished eating, Chen Ying even took a photo of the remains to analyze his dental condition.
It must be said, when giant pandas eat a lot of meat, their poop is quite stinky.
But it's a bit better than that of feline animals.
However, felines bury theirs, whereas he simply poops as he goes, without any concern for hygiene.
Fortunately, he wasn't like some bears that like to smear themselves with poop. (Here's looking at you, Great Ocean.)
With bamboo shoots and fresh bamboo available, the giant panda lost interest in hard-to-pluck birds.
He ate as he walked and stopped to take a nap when he was tired.
Chen Ying stayed with him the whole time, documenting his daily diet and defecation.
Xiong Youming and the others had gone ahead to find a campsite and set up camp, facilitating continued observation over the next few days.
This bamboo forest was growing nicely, interspersed with a few large trees, convenient for pandas to rest in overnight.
They also found an abandoned tree root cave, but Chen Ying wondered if, given the giant panda's size, it could squeeze through.
By nightfall, when it had grown dark, the lazy panda finally reached the bamboo forest.
This place wasn't his territory, but it wasn't far from his own.
After arriving, instead of rushing to eat or sleep or catch mice, he sniffed around the abandoned tree root cave and even tried to squeeze into it, but unfortunately, while his head got in, his shoulders got stuck. In the end, Chen Ying had to drag him out.
It was such a struggle that he was soaked in sweat and his arms went numb before he could calm the beast down.
After being dragged out, the giant panda, grumpy and refusing to eat the bamboo, climbed a tree and wedged himself into the thickest branch, refusing to come down.
Chen Ying watched him for a while, shook his head, and went off to find Xiong Youming with the walkie-talkie.
Chen Ying's tent was at the earlier campsite, and the Large Clouded Leopard was still staying in his tent. This time, he had to squeeze into a tent with Xiong Youming.
In the middle of the night, Chen Ying suddenly woke up. He sat up and listened intently for a while before hurriedly getting dressed and leaving.
"Brother Xiong, it sounds like two pandas are fighting below; I'm going to check it out."
"Wait for me, I'll come with you."
Hastily dressed, they came out, and the two young men from the tent next door stood up too.
Chen Ying told them to keep an eye on the camp and pulled Xiong Youming down the slope.
"I suspect this bamboo forest belongs to another giant panda. Let's see how things go. If it's a female, it's okay, but if it's a male, we might need to prepare to intervene."
This conflict was also their doing since they deliberately lured the giant panda here. If it caused another panda to get hurt, they definitely couldn't shirk responsibility.
Even though pandafights might happen without their involvement, what if the pandas never encountered each other, right?
His mind a mess, he didn't dare stop moving his feet,
A few minutes later, Chen Ying spotted two giant pandas roaring and tussling.
No, there were three giant pandas!
Chen Ying looked up and saw a one-year-old panda cub trembling and clutching the tree branches, his heart tightening further.
"Stop, brother, stop! Good male bears don't fight female bears, just stop, will you?"
Not daring to rush in and get beaten up, Chen Ying chopped a long bamboo pole to aid the mother bear.
"Woof woof woof!~"
Distracted by his intervention, the two bears naturally separated.
Chen Ying quickly shoved the bamboo stick into the giant panda's paws, and taking the shoots Xiong Youming had chopped, threw them to the giant panda.
The mother bear backed away a few steps, stood under the tree snarling and watched them vigilantly.
"Coming here to steal food and then beating the owners, what morals!"
Chen Ying cautiously approached, seeing no aggressive intent from the giant panda before he finally relaxed a bit.
"Moo moo moo, woof woof!"
"Are you saying it climbed the tree to hit you?" Chen Ying glanced at the mother bear and thought to himself, you're quite fierce.
"This is their territory after all..."
"Ying ying ying!"
"What a whine, I know you're good at fighting, but she's a female bear with a cub, can't you let it go?"
Why should I let go? The giant panda looked at him sideways, the concept of "yielding" did not exist in a panda's mind.
Territory disputes were ultimately about competing for food, for survival, and had nothing to do with gender.
Especially this picky giant panda, having found such a large expanse of its favorite bamboo, it wasn't going to leave until it had its fill.
The mother bear probably realized this too and thought about retreating, but with two-legged beasts around and that large fellow not easy to deal with, it dared not carelessly let her cub come down.
Chen Ying, seeing the anxious mother bear and looking at the frightened cub, fur standing on end, in the tree, his brow furrowed, an idea formed in his mind.
"When I was coming here, I found a big patch of shoots just up there. Why don't we go eat first, in case another panda sees it..."
The big fellow immediately calmed down, got up, and was ready to go, "Hurry up, starving to death after a fight, hurry, hurry."
Sure enough, a real foodie, talking about shoots got him more excited than a female.
