Chapter 91: Break the leg, lock it up
Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Break the leg, lock it up
Just as she was about to ponder further, she saw Serena making a face at her, with her red lips slightly moving.
Elena’s expression changed drastically as she immediately stood up from the sofa.
What Serena was mouthing was unmistakable: "You don’t deserve to be my husband’s mother!"
After the two had left, Elena clenched her fists tightly, seething with hatred.
Once in the car, Serena instructed Brandon to drive, then turned her head to look at Lucas.
Seeing his face so gloomy that it seemed to be dripping with ink, Serena quickly and gently tugged at the hem of his clothing.
"Husband, don’t be angry, it’s not worth it."
It’s not worth it if you harm your own health.
Lucas came back to his senses, pulling at the corner of his lips.
"I’m fine."
To say he didn’t mind the repeated humiliation and mockery from his own mother would be a lie.
But Lucas had grown accustomed to it.
He simply couldn’t understand why there were mothers as cold and cruel as Elena Ryan in the world.
"Some people refuse to face the harsh reality and tend to habitually blame everyone else for their mistakes."
Serena leaned on the man’s sturdy arm, murmuring to herself.
Thinking of how Lucas had always lived in the shadow of Elena since his childhood, she couldn’t help but feel heartbroken.
Lucas heard this, his lips pressed tightly together as he remained silent.
The car fell into a strange silence once again.
Serena knew that some wounds, once inflicted, need a lifetime to heal.
Lucas was decisive and swift in the business world.
But in reality, he had never forgotten the harm and anguish his parents had caused him.
Serena didn’t know how to comfort Lucas, but she could only wrap her arms tightly around his waist.
Her palm gently patted his shoulder, offering silent comfort.
Soon, the car stopped in front of the Parker family’s house.
Today was the engagement banquet between the Parker and Summers families.
The engagement scene was filled with powerful figures, and the lights shone brightly.
The Parker family was a well-known wealthy clan in Corland. Although they had begun to decline over the recent years, a lean camel is still bigger than a horse.
But the Summers family could only be considered a lower-ranked wealthy household.
If it hadn’t been for Sir Summers saving Old Master Parker’s life back then, there would have been no way for the Summers family to connect with the Parkers.
Lucas didn’t immediately get out of the car.
He turned his head to look out the window and suddenly asked, "Serena, if you hadn’t gotten lost back then, you would have been the leading lady of this banquet."
"Serena, do you regret marrying me?"
Lucas’s voice was deep and hoarse, his tone seemingly calm.
But Serena could hear a great sense of helplessness in it.
"No," Serena answered decisively.
Lucas looked at Serena incredulously, his heart skipping a beat uncontrollably.
"Really?"
"Really! Even if I hadn’t gotten lost back then, I wouldn’t have married an egomaniac like Everett."
Serena thought of Everett’s self-righteous face and immediately showed an expression of disgust.
Her husband was better, good-looking, and gentle.
And most importantly, he was kind to her.
"Actually, I’m really grateful that I got lost back then because I met you."
The girl leaned in close, her delicate face brimming with a faint smile. Her two little dimples shallowly surfaced, soft and sweet.
Lucas felt as if something had struck his heart fiercely.
"Lucas, you know me, I never settle. What I like is what I like, and what I don’t like, I don’t."
She liked Lucas.
Very much so.
The kind of like where she wants to spend a lifetime with him.
Lucas Shaw stared intently at Serena Summers’ fair and delicate cheeks, unable to help but let out a light chuckle.
"I’ve noted down what you said, if you dare go back on it later..."
"What will you do?" Serena puffed out her small chest and moved closer, her face full of righteousness.
"Break your legs and lock you up."
Lucas Shaw’s voice was low and husky as it drifted leisurely.
Serena’s eyes widened in shock, seemingly unable to believe these words came from Lucas Shaw’s mouth.
Although Lucas Shaw was known for his moodiness, he had always been gentle with her.
This was the first time he had spoken to her so harshly.
Seeing Serena stunned into silence, Lucas Shaw thought he had scared her.
He stretched out his long arm and cupped the girl’s slender and soft waist with his broad palm, pulling her into his embrace.
Caught off guard, Serena was pulled into the man’s arms.
Her nose bumped into his firm, scalding chest, the pain making her nose tingle.
"I’m just joking. Don’t be scared."
His cool voice sounded above her head, causing Serena’s body to stiffen slightly for a moment.
She looked up at Lucas Shaw with a tone full of helplessness, "I’m not scared at all because that day will never come."
Seeing Lucas Shaw’s spirits fall, Serena landed a quick kiss on his cheek with the swiftness of lightning before he could react.
Taking advantage of his momentary astonishment, she immediately turned and opened the door to exit the car.
Lucas Shaw was still reeling from Serena’s words when a soft sensation suddenly touched his cheek.
By the time he regained his composure, he saw Serena wriggle out of his arms like a fish and turn to leave the car.
"Will that day never come?" Lucas Shaw raised his hand to soothe his racing heart.
He was truly becoming more and more anxious.
Lucas Shaw sighed softly and hastily got out of the car as well.
The Parker Family’s living room was brightly lit, and the courtyard was filled with guests attending the banquet.
They gathered in groups, polite and courteous smiles on their faces.
While everyone was engaged in lively conversation, a black Maybach pulled up in front of the Parker estate.
Many people stopped talking subconsciously and turned their heads to look at the car.
If they weren’t mistaken, that car was a limited edition; no more than a few could be found in the entire city of S, let alone all of Corland.
So the person arriving must be someone of wealth or high rank.
Countless pairs of eyes were fixed on the vehicle, eager to see who was inside.
The Parker Family had been gradually declining.
Unless they could climb into high society, it would take no more than three to five years for the Parkers to disappear from the circle of elites in S city.
Under the watchful gaze of many, the car door was slowly pushed open from the inside.
A girl dressed in a pink-purple evening gown, with delicate features, slowly stepped out of the car.
Upon seeing the girl’s face, many people collectively gasped in astonishment.
Everyone couldn’t help but show a look of amazement.
Even in the entertainment industry, there wouldn’t be too many who could compare with such a face.
"Who is this girl? How come we’ve never seen her before?"
"Is she the heiress of some wealthy family?"
"Not sure, but that car is worth tens of millions, whoever can afford it must be extremely rich."
Many people huddled together, whispering among themselves.
Everyone was speculating about the girl’s real identity.
Just then, a man with a tall and slender figure slowly emerged from the car.
The man was stunningly handsome, with delicate features that seemed to have been meticulously sculpted by the Creator, almost flawlessly exquisite.
His narrow, phoenix-like eyes slightly narrowed, revealing an unfathomable light in his deep, black pupils.
The black bespoke suit on his tall and straight figure accentuated his extraordinary demeanor.
"It’s Mr. Lucas Shaw!"
From within the crowd, someone exclaimed in surprise.
