Forced to Marry the Sickly Billionaire -
Chapter 270: The Failure of the Experiment
Chapter 270: Chapter 270: The Failure of the Experiment
"Nathan, what’s the deal with Miss Summers? Why did Justin Lane say she’s his niece?"
Mrs. Fletcher had been worried about her son and had not paid any attention to the Lane Family’s affairs.
Therefore, she was not aware that Jeanette Lane had visited the Lane Family, and her understanding of Jeanette’s daughter was even less clear.
Mentioning Serena Summers, Nathan Fletcher’s eyes flickered slightly as he explained her relationship with the Lane Family.
"Mom, although Miss Summers is young, her medical skills have even Dean Carter singing her praises. You could try to trust her."
Mrs. Fletcher’s face was pale, her eyes somewhat swollen, "It’s not that I don’t trust her, it’s just... I dare not gamble with your brother’s life!"
She had never witnessed Serena Summers’s medical expertise in person, and based solely on hearsay, she found it hard to believe.
"Let’s wait for Dean Carter to arrive tomorrow before discussing further." With a mother-son bond, Nathan Fletcher naturally understood what was in Mrs. Fletcher’s heart.
Mrs. Fletcher nodded, clasping Lucas Fletcher’s hand tightly. She pressed it against her cheek, eyes full of pain and sorrow.
Nathan Fletcher sighed deeply, and despite himself, he defended Serena again: "Look, this evening your brother’s condition has been very stable, not like before when he used to have frequent poison attacks."
Reminded by Nathan, Mrs. Fletcher realized it was true.
Indeed, in the past, Lucas would wake up every night in pain, tossing and turning on the bed.
His cries filled the entire sickroom, causing her heart to ache over and over.
But tonight, Lucas was very calm, not fussing or making noise, sleeping very peacefully.
The next morning, Lucas Shaw and Serena Summers arrived early at the hospital.
As they got there, Dean Carter and Professor Parker also happened to come, coincidentally meeting at the hospital entrance.
Dean Carter quickly pulled Serena aside, wanting to clarify Lucas Fletcher’s condition, but Serena said, "Dean Carter, I have already verified Lucas Fletcher’s condition last night, and it’s indeed the same poison that my husband once had."
To be precise, it was not exactly the same.
It was even more potent than the poison Lucas Shaw had encountered, with stronger side effects.
It was more like... a failed experiment.
This made Serena even more certain of a fact: the illegal organization from seventeen years ago had not completely disappeared; they had just been hiding in some corner all these years.
And they had already begun to work on a new drug.
As to why they had stayed hidden for so long...
Serena sneered in her heart, a shade of dark light crossing her eyes.
Seventeen years ago, the Shaw Family had cooperated with the police to destroy that laboratory hidden deep in the mountains, and several people had perished in the process.
The batch of illegally developed drugs had also been destroyed.
Thus, Serena speculated that the main person responsible for drug development back then had died, and the drugs had been destroyed once and for all.
So for these seventeen years, they had been frantically searching for the surviving experimental subjects.
Lucas Shaw was exactly one of them.
They had hidden for seventeen years, and now they could no longer contain themselves, ready to stir up trouble, surely because they had made some progress with the drug.
But what they had researched, the so-called drug that could drive human evolution, was always a defective product.
Quietly standing beside Lucas Shaw, Serena lowered her voice and said, "Do you remember I told you about someone tampering with the samples I left in the lab?"
"I remember." Lucas Shaw nodded, gave a wary glance toward the two walking ahead, and also lowered his voice.
After that incident, he had continuously dispatched people to secretly monitor those who appeared around him and Serena.
But there had been little progress.
Serena Summers stood on her tiptoes, whispering into his ear in a voice only the two of them could hear: "I’ve checked. The poison in Lucas Fletcher is different from yours. It’s actually highly similar to the toxin samples I intentionally scrambled."
To avoid suspicion, Serena hadn’t completely scrambled the data sequence of that sample but had only changed the order of a few elements.
Even a few element changes could result in a vastly different overall effect.
Lucas Shaw raised his eyebrows in surprise and asked, "Can Lucas Fletcher’s poison be cured?"
"Don’t worry, it only causes symptoms similar to when your poison acts up; it’s not lethal."
At first, she thought Lucas Fletcher had been poisoned with the same toxin as Lucas Shaw, but after thinking it over carefully last night, she spotted some differences.
The poison in Lucas Fletcher was almost identical to the toxin sample she had carefully altered.
This further confirmed her suspicion: there was a mole in Liam Shaw’s laboratory.
"Let’s keep this matter quiet for now. Don’t trust anyone too easily," Lucas Shaw held Serena’s hand tightly, pulling her into his embrace.
Serena’s medical talent was so extraordinary that it made her all the more vulnerable.
Lucas Shaw wondered if he should arrange bodyguards to accompany Serena when she goes out in the future.
Oblivious to Lucas Shaw’s thoughts, Serena hurried to catch up with Dean Carter and Professor Parker.
After arriving at the hospital room, they discussed Lucas Fletcher’s condition, and Mrs. Fletcher’s tears fell ceaselessly, crying until she was drenched.
Serena couldn’t bear to look, her emotions complex as she turned her face away.
Lucas Shaw had been standing by her side all along. Seeing her reaction, he immediately stretched out his hand to pull her into his embrace.
His large palm gently caressed the top of her head, murmuring comfortingly, "It’s okay, everything will be all right."
Dean Carter and Professor Parker also wore grave expressions.
Professor Parker suddenly said: "Serena, since Youngest Master Fletcher has the same poison as Second Master had before, you should have kept a sample, right? If we have the sample and all put our heads together, we should come up with an antidote formula, right?"
Serena pursed her lips and shook her head, "I didn’t bring that sample, and I’ve already sent someone to look for the antidote ingredients. Now all we can do is wait for a miracle."
Professor Parker fell into a rare silence, lips pressed tightly into a straight line, deep in thought.
Serena withdrew her gaze, handing over the detox medicine and the Spring Elixir she had made by staying up all night to Mrs. Fletcher.
"When Youngest Master Fletcher’s poison acts up, you can give him one pill to temporarily suppress the spread of toxins in his body."
After leaving the hospital, Serena and Lucas Shaw visited Old Master Lane’s sickroom.
Old Master Lane had woken up but was still very weak.
Upon seeing Serena, his lips quivered and his hands trembled uncontrollably.
"Is that you, Serena?"
Old Master Lane was visibly moved, his eyes gradually moistening.
For some reason, Serena’s eyes also began to well up.
She quickly walked to the bedside, tightly holding Old Master Lane’s hand, "Yes, I’m Serena. Grandpa, you’re amazing. You recognized me at first glance!"
Old Master Lane laughed and waved, explaining, "I saw your pictures online before you came... It’s wonderful. You’ve grown up so much in the blink of an eye."
His tone suggested that Old Master Lane seemed to have met her before?
Noticing the confusion in Serena’s eyes, Old Master Lane explained: "The year you were born, I actually visited the Summers Family, but Henry Summers said your mother... Jeanette Lane didn’t want to see me and asked me to leave."
"At that time, you were only a month old. Jeanette Lane had never taken care of anyone before, so she left you with a nanny. I just took a quick look and then I left."
Old Master Lane’s voice was filled with emotion as he gazed at Serena with a mix of affection and regret, "If only I’d known, I would have taken you back to the Lane Family. You must have suffered a lot all these years outside, haven’t you?"
