Forced to Marry the Sickly Billionaire -
Chapter 264: All That He Could Offer
Chapter 264: Chapter 264: All That He Could Offer
Lucas Shaw chuckled lightly, "Where is there such a thing as people who are naturally a perfect match? Isn’t being in love enough?"
"What I mean is, I don’t want Serena to repeat the mistakes of your father or your mother."
As soon as Justin Lane’s words dropped, Lucas Shaw suddenly felt the taut string in his mind snap.
He slowly stood up straight, his voice cold and deliberate as he enunciated each word, "That day will never come."
"Just empty promises, just because you say it won’t happen, it won’t? Let me tell you the truth, over twenty years ago, Henry Summers said the same thing to me." Justin Lane was now very sensitive to these matters.
After all, there had already been a precedent.
Although he didn’t know his niece Serena well enough, and hadn’t spent many days with her, as long as she was his niece, he would never ignore her.
Over twenty years ago, Henry Summers had confidently come to him and said that he would be good to Jeanette Lane for a lifetime, love her and never leave her.
But in the blink of an eye, he was seen entangled with another woman in the street.
He took photos and sent them to Jeanette Lane, but she not only didn’t believe them, she foolishly went to confront Henry, and ended up being sweet-talked into his deception.
He was angered, and eventually simply stopped dealing with the matter.
"I won’t become a second Henry Summers." Lucas Shaw stood in front of Justin Lane, his dark eyes full of conviction.
He made a phone call, and soon Ethan Wells arrived at the hospital, holding a document in his hand.
Lucas Shaw flipped through the document, signing his name without a hint of hesitation.
"Serena is not Jeanette Lane, and I am not Henry Summers. I know what your concerns are, and I can’t guarantee what the future holds, but what I can be certain of is that in this life, my wife will only be Serena."
Justin Lane didn’t know what he was up to, taking the document with a puzzled look.
He glanced down at it, flipping through without much interest, then suddenly paused, stunned.
"This is..."
"I don’t have much to give, the Shaw Group is the family legacy built over generations. I won’t and have no right to simply hand it over, but these are all the assets I’ve accumulated over the years, everything I can offer."
If he and Serena ever divorce, or separate, apart from joint marital assets, all these would be for her.
Although he knew that Serena didn’t care about the money, if it ever came to that stage, this was all he could think of, all he could give her,
Justin Lane, however, knew very well that these assets were more than just a string of numbers.
It was a substantial fortune.
Even he would not be able to come up with so much money in such a short time, but Lucas Shaw did.
His feelings complicated, he looked at Lucas Shaw, still not giving up, he questioned: "I see that Serena cares a lot about you. Do you think doing this will dissipate my doubts about you? Don’t forget, back then, in order to escape your mother, your father chose to leave without a penny. And then?"
In the end, Elena Ryan’s illness grew worse, she spent her days acting like a madwoman, violently abusing Lucas Shaw even more fiercely.
It didn’t seem like the way to treat one’s own son, but more like a tool for venting anger.
Lucas Shaw looked down, his lips tightly pressed into a straight line, his forehead’s wispy hair shielding his brows and eyes, hiding the expression beneath them.
Ethan Wells looked at Justin Lane with anger.
No one had ever spoken to his old man with that tone before, but the problem was the man was the lady’s uncle, and even if he was angry, he could only bear it.
Right now, he was just relieved Brandon Reese wasn’t here. With his temperament, he would have exploded on the spot.
When had his old man ever suffered such indignity?
Yet Lucas Shaw was seriously contemplating, in fact, the questions Justin Lane asked had no so-called correct answers.
Because no matter the answer, it’ll always be met with skepticism, just empty promises, anyone can say them, but not everyone can follow through.
After a long silence, he finally looked up slightly, "You are Serena’s family, so I respect you. But even if you are Serena’s uncle, you have no right to interfere in our relationship. I will not let her go unless I die."
No matter the cost, he could bear it.
He had finally firmly grasped her in his hands, how could he bear to let go?
Justin Lane suddenly laughed, the tense atmosphere instantly dissipating, and the low pressure in the air also began to fade away.
"Remember what you said today, the Lane Family is not to be trifled with by just anyone."
Ethan Wells sensed his change in mood and was suddenly a bit confused.
He looked at Lucas Shaw, only to see him revert to his lazy demeanor, leaning against the wall, eyes drooping, with a hint of a smile on his face.
The guiding nature of Justin Lane’s words, coupled with the news that Jeanette Lane had visited the Lane Family yesterday, led him to guess that Justin Lane’s attitude was not really set on tearing them apart.
He was simply probing if he was like Henry Summers, being with Serena with an ulterior motive.
Now, he had guessed correctly.
Indeed, Justin Lane was testing him.
He wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.
The things he said just now were to test how deep Lucas Shaw’s feelings for Serena were and to see if he would give her up because of interests or other factors.
Although he was Serena’s uncle, he had never cared for her since she was a child, so he had no right to interfere with her love life.
As long as the other person was of good character and would treat her well, not greedy and selfish like Henry Summers, he had no reason to object.
Fortunately, Lucas Shaw had successfully passed his test.
And he even undeservedly obtained a guarantee.
The gift of assets document was legally binding; if one day Lucas Shaw betrayed Serena or separated from her, this money would be Serena’s.
"Don’t let her know about this document for now," Lucas Shaw reminded.
He of course was referring to Serena, Justin Lane nodded, folded the document, and tucked it into his suit pocket.
Soon, Old Master Lane’s surgery was completed.
When Serena came out, she saw her uncle and Lucas Shaw each standing on opposite sides of the corridor, leaning against the wall, not as if waiting for the surgery to end, but more like a standoff.
After Old Master Lane was pushed out of the operating room, Justin Lane immediately stepped forward, "Dean Carter, how is my dad?"
"The surgery was very successful, as long as he rests well and sticks to his medication, there shouldn’t be any issues." Dean Carter left after advising further precautions.
It was not a major surgery to begin with, but Justin Lane was very concerned about Old Master Lane’s health and insisted on having the best surgeon perform the operation.
Although Dean Carter was getting on in years, his hands were steady when wielding the surgical scalpel, completing the surgery very successfully.
Serena quietly approached Lucas Shaw and asked softly, "Are you and my big uncle not getting along well? Why do I feel like the atmosphere between you two is odd?"
"Is there? You must be mistaken." Lucas Shaw lied without a blush.
