Chapter 260: Chapter 260: Coming Back to Admit a Mistake
"I am indeed the young miss of the Lane Family, what right do you have to stop me from entering?" Jeanette Lane mustered her courage, asserting her identity.
She even haughtily raised her chin.
However, the servant looked her up and down, "Young miss? Our Lane Family only has two young masters; where did a young miss come from? Are you mistaken?"
In fact, ever since Jeanette left the Lane Family, this name became taboo.
Many new servants didn’t even know that the Lane Family once had a daughter.
When had Jeanette ever suffered such humiliation?
She immediately grew angry, "I want to see Justin Lane! Whether I am the young miss of the Lane Family will be clear then!"
The servant looked troubled, "I’m truly sorry, but without proof of identity, I cannot let you in."
She was just performing her duties as a servant.
If someone were admitted and an accident happened, she would lose her job.
Out of options, Jeanette quickly made a phone call to Julian Lane.
However, Julian had long since blocked her number. After numerous attempts without getting through, she became so anxious that she paced around in circles.
The noise outside grew too loud and disturbed the butler inside.
"What’s all this commotion?" the butler came out, looking somewhat displeased.
When he saw Jeanette, he froze, "Young miss? Is it really you? You..."
Jeanette was already fuming, but seeing the butler stirred a bitter sweetness inside her.
It had been twenty years, and the butler had aged significantly compared to her memories.
He was still dressed in a neatly tailored suit; only now his hair had turned grey, and he wore metal-rimmed reading glasses.
The wrinkles on his face marked the passage of time.
The one thing that hadn’t changed was his eyes.
When he looked at her, they were still as gentle and indulgent as ever.
Those memories she thought she had long forgotten suddenly surged up like a tide.
"Butler Uncle..."
The butler’s eyes immediately reddened.
It had been a long time since he had heard this address.
Before Jeanette left home, she always called him that.
Even though he was just a servant, Jeanette always treated him with immense respect.
"Miss, why have you come back?" the butler invited her inside.
Jeanette walked past the maid, giving her a fierce glare.
Having been glared at, the maid scratched her head, her demeanor lacking any semblance of a privileged young lady.
One would have thought she was some country bumpkin.
It had been over twenty years since Jeanette had been back to the Lane Family, and many things had changed, including some of the décor and layout.
As she stepped into the living room, she heard a bout of severe coughing.
Then, an aged figure suddenly appeared at the staircase landing.
"Butler, what’s all this noise about?"
The butler rushed forward, excitedly supporting Old Master Lane, pointing at Jeanette, "Old Master, look who has come back?"
Old Master Lane followed the butler’s direction and instantly froze.
His hand, holding his cane, began to tremble; his pupils constricted and it took him a long moment to collect himself.
Fortunately, as a man who had seen much of the world, Old Master Lane quickly composed himself.
However, his already expressionless face now looked terrifyingly grim.
"Father..."
Jeanette began carefully, her heart full of trepidation.
That madman Henry Summers had threatened her using her children’s safety; she had no choice but to seek help from her father and elder brother.
She hadn’t slept well for several days, suffering from insomnia, tossing and turning in bed every night.
In the silent depths of each night, the events of the past twenty years and her marriage to Henry would resurface.
Some matters simply couldn’t withstand careful thought.
All this time she had been deceiving herself.
Henry had been deceiving her from the start.
Initially, it was for her money; later, he feared their three sons, after learning the truth, would join forces to retaliate against her.
"Don’t call me father. I ceased being your father the moment you stepped out of this house twenty years ago. You have no relation to the Lane Family since then." Old Master Lane was furious, caught in a fit of coughing.
Hearing the cough, the butler quickly went to pat his back, "Old Master, you’re not well, don’t get so upset."
Old Master Lane’s face grimaced as he waved his hand, his sharp eyes fixed sternly on Jeanette, "Get out, you are not welcome here."
"Father, please don’t be like this. I know I was wrong, I’ve come back to apologize," Jeanette, concerned for Old Master Lane’s health, hurriedly stepped forward.
"If you can’t understand plain speech, I’ll have to ask the security to throw you out," Old Master Lane’s voice was cold as ice, piercing straight into Jeanette’s heart.
Her heart felt as if it was being torn apart, the pain nearly suffocating her.
"Father, I truly know I was wrong," she knelt down, her eyes brimming with tears.
The butler couldn’t stand it and also pleaded, "Old Master, I believe the young miss realizes her mistake, maybe you could forgive her."
Even the butler felt pity, how could Old Master Lane not?
However, he clearly knew the reason for Jeanette’s return.
He wasn’t interested in beating around the bush, "I heard the Summers Group recently declared bankruptcy, and your adopted daughter has been taken into police custody."
Old Master Lane’s voice was calm, but those few sentences struck Jeanette like a thunderbolt.
She looked at Old Master Lane in disbelief, "Father, how did you know..."
Old Master Lane snorted coldly, "Never mind how I know. Are you going to deny that you came back for these two reasons?"
Jeanette guiltily lowered her gaze, her eyes flickering.
Seeing her like this, Old Master Lane knew all too well what had happened.
His gaze filled with disappointment, "Go back. I won’t help you."
Even after so many years, he still disliked Henry and had never acknowledged him as his son-in-law.
A grown man, without any responsibilities, had made his daughter forsake her family and everything else to elope with him.
Now that the Summers Group was bankrupt, she had come back alone to seek help.
"Father, please help Henry. After the bankruptcy, our family is really struggling..."
Jeanette knew she was at fault, but she had her reasons.
"Cough, cough, cuff..."
Old Master Lane was seized by another fierce bout of coughing, suddenly blood surged up, and he spat out a mouthful of blood, swaying and fainting right then.
When Justin Lane came back from work, this was the scene he walked into.
Although Old Master Lane was unwell, he wasn’t supposed to collapse just like that.
As he stepped in and saw Jeanette’s face, he understood the whole story.
He instructed the butler to help Old Master Lane upstairs and called the family doctor.
Due to Old Master Lane’s illness, the Lane Family temporarily descended into chaos.
