Chapter 87: Chapter 20: Free Combat, Deterrence
Zhang Jingyue hadn’t expected Gu Xiaoxi to be so strong. In the confrontation, she was punched so hard that she kept stepping back, feeling as if her entire arm was about to be useless.
Gu Xiaoxi’s face was cold as she raised her palm, and a fierce palm wind gathered in her hand, twisting the air, but it was invisible to others.
At that time, Zhang Jingyue, Na Feng, Zhao Yi, and Chen Xuan exchanged glances and, in tacit understanding, attacked Gu Xiaoxi together.
Although they felt that the aura around Gu Xiaoxi was somewhat odd, they attacked without hesitation. They were already fighting as a group today, so punishment was certain.
Since they were to be punished anyway, they were determined to teach Gu Xiaoxi a lesson no matter what.
Ye Qiran was shocked as well, fearing that if Gu Xiaoxi got hurt, they would have a hard time explaining to the superiors.
"No, I have to stop them; this is too barbaric. If someone gets hurt, we can’t justify it," Ye Qiran said, frightened, but was firmly held back by Shao Changfeng.
"Don’t move!" Shao Changfeng said with a cold face.
As Ye Qiran watched the four converge on Gu Xiaoxi with punches and kicks, she screamed in fright, "Stop it, all of you!"
Just then, Gu Xiaoxi’s palms struck repeatedly, moving too fast for the four attackers to see clearly how she delivered her techniques before they were ruthlessly sent flying by her palms.
The first to be flung away was Na Feng.
Then came Zhao Yi and Chen Xuan, and finally, Zhang Jingyue’s throat was caught by Gu Xiaoxi, who forced her to kneel on one knee before her like a soldier submitting to a queen.
Zhang Jingyue couldn’t believe she had been defeated by Gu Xiaoxi.
Her punches had seemed to sink into cotton, and by the time she realized what was happening, everyone else had been flung away, and she was caught by the neck by Gu Xiaoxi.
The pose was extremely unseemly; she could only look up high, making eye contact with Gu Xiaoxi. Zhang Jingyue was so furious she was steaming with rage and bleeding from the mouth. At the same time, she was in shock, as if in a dream, and it felt surreal.
In Gu Xiaoxi’s eyes, she saw coldness and unfeelingness, solemnity and death. Her gaze was as fierce and ruthless as a vicious wolf.
"Do you submit? Or shall we fight again?" Gu Xiaoxi curled her lips, her delicate brows lifting in triumph. The resoluteness and ferocity in her eyes disappeared in an instant, replaced by an inscrutable and wicked charm.
It was then that Zhang Jingyue truly felt the gap between herself and Gu Xiaoxi; she couldn’t move at all while her throat was clutched.
Everyone else stood frozen in place, still holding their fighting postures, staring blankly as Gu Xiaoxi sent three people flying and subdued Zhang Jingyue.
All believed they were seeing things.
"Let her go, Gu Xiaoxi! Do you know who she is?" Na Feng, rubbing his sore backside, immediately came forward to stop her, his tone quite unpleasant, "Do you believe I can have you thrown out of the military right now? You made your comrade kneel before you, what right do you have to be a soldier?"
Gu Xiaoxi scoffed coldly, looking at Zhang Jingyue, "Did you kneel to me?"
Kneeling on one knee signifies submission. True kneeling should be on both knees.
If Zhang Jingyue admitted it, she would become the biggest joke.
Gu Xiaoxi tugged at her lips, withdrew her hand, and looked down at Zhang Jingyue from above, "I don’t care who you are. You provoked me first today. If you have the ability, then make me leave the military. If you don’t have that ability, then stop bothering me in the future."
Some people, like her and Zhang Jingyue, are destined never to be friends.
As Gu Xiaoxi finished speaking, the faces of the group centered around Zhang Jingyue changed dramatically.
Everyone saw Gu Xiaoxi standing in the sunlight, her round and fair ears peeking out from under her military cap; her uniform made her radiate an awe-inspiring righteousness, like a war god descending from the skies or a shining, golden luminary that drew everyone’s gaze.
The woman was beautiful, her long lashes framed a pair of eyes that shone brightly like gems washed in autumn rain, clear and cool.
Zhang Jingyue slumped to the ground, taking a long time to recover her senses, finally realizing deeply that Gu Xiaoxi was not as simple as she appeared.
...
In the silence...
"Have you all had enough? Does anyone need to visit the infirmary?" Shao Changfeng’s voice timely came from afar, and then his cold eyes stared straight at everyone.
Everyone immediately came back to their senses and lined up properly; no one uttered a word.
Shao Changfeng stood in front of the lined-up troops, watching as everyone formed up, his gaze cold enough to freeze water, "Do you think the training has been too easy lately?"
The platoon fell silent, no one spoke.
It took Ye Qiran a long time to recover from the strange techniques Gu Xiaoxi had just used, unable to believe that Gu Xiaoxi had sent flying Zhang Jingyue and the other three with just one technique.
Zhang Jingyue, a taekwondo black belt and disciple of a judo master, was as skilled as she was gentle on the outside, but even Zhang Jingyue had been caught by the neck with a single technique in front of Gu Xiaoxi.
Indeed, as Shao Changfeng said, it was difficult to fathom the depths of Gu Xiaoxi.
"Since all of you think the training isn’t intense enough, let’s up the ante. If you still have the energy to fight each other, then I must have been mistaken," Shao Changfeng said, glaring at everyone fiercely. His cold tone made everyone shiver.
"Company, attention! Left turn!" Shao Changfeng bellowed, and everyone turned to the left. Then he led them to the back mountain of the training ground.
At a mud pit where some old soldiers were training, he called them over, then pointed at the mud pit with a tone as cold as the onset of winter, "One minute, everyone get down there. Begin free sparring until everyone is down."
Zhang Jingyue and a few male soldiers exchanged looks.
Everyone quickly jumped into the mud pit. Then more than a dozen pairs of eyes were all fixed on Gu Xiaoxi.
Gu Xiaoxi stood at the edge of the mud pit, her face darkening as she glared at Shao Changfeng, suspicious that he was deliberately causing trouble for her.
Since it was free sparring, the few moves she had just performed definitely couldn’t have really convinced Zhang Jingyue and the others.
Was this giving everyone an opportunity to seek revenge on her?
"Gu Xiaoxi, get down!" Shao Changfeng said coldly.
Gu Xiaoxi clenched her fists and stepped into the mud pit.
Song Jingyi, Qin Chu, and Li Chun immediately took positions beside her.
"Begin!" Shao Changfeng commanded.
With Zhang Jingyue taking the lead, eighteen people fought against four, while the remaining few, not daring to join the chaotic battle, simply paired up to practice.
Gu Xiaoxi was instantly surrounded by ten people, while the other eight dealt with Song Jingyi and the other two.
Everyone didn’t hesitate to grapple with each other. The mud pit, deep in some places and shallow in others, caused anyone thrown out to be covered with mud and also directly impeded everyone’s speed.
Gu Xiaoxi withdrew her Inner Strength, thinking that since it was training, taking a few punches wasn’t a big deal. Without using Inner Strength and relying solely on combat techniques, she was more than capable of dealing with them in such a place. Moreover, it was a good chance for her to train her actual combat skills.
At that moment, the mud greatly slowed everyone’s pace, but for Gu Xiaoxi, it wasn’t an obstacle.
Since it was a free sparring session, everyone fought with all their might, especially Zhang Jingyue and the others.
Sometime later, after being knocked down by Gu Xiaoxi for the third time, Zhang Jingyue fiercely swallowed a mouthful of mud, her eyes shooting flames of anger as she clenched her fists.
Although she landed several punches on Gu Xiaoxi in the meantime, ultimately, she couldn’t do anything to her.
For a full two hours, Gu Xiaoxi stood stable in her stance, and even though her body was covered in mud, it was only because others had splashed it on her as they fell.
The rest of them lay scattered in the mud pit, exhausted on the ground, unable to move any longer.
Song Jingyi and Qin Chu exchanged glances, unable to deny her ability any longer.
They had always known Gu Xiaoxi had excellent physical stamina, but they had not expected it to be to such an abnormal degree. She had utterly defeated a group of men.
"Does anyone else want to try?" Gu Xiaoxi’s gaze swept across everyone in the mud pit. Including Zhang Jingyue, who was lying there, gasping for breath.
Her face, hair, and clothes were all covered in mud. She looked nothing like the delicate lady everyone knew her as, completely disheveled.
Everyone was daunted by her fierceness into silence.
Seeing that no one spoke, Gu Xiaoxi took a long breath to clear the stale air from her lungs, then relaxed her stance and looked up at Shao Changfeng, "Can we get out now?"
Shao Changfeng squinted his eyes, standing on high ground, his face expressionless as he looked at everyone, "What I said was for everyone to be down. Since you’re all tired, rest for ten minutes then continue the free sparring."
Upon hearing this, everyone’s expression changed instantly.
Everyone down? Didn’t that include Gu Xiaoxi?
That freak, single-handedly exhausted eighteen people over two hours, and she appeared only slightly flushed, breathing a bit heavily, exhibiting no signs of collapsing from fatigue.
If they had to knock her down too, wouldn’t that take an indefinite time in the future?
Only now did they realize why she was notoriously called a freak.
Just then, a loud laugh erupted from the edge of the mud pit. A burly man, with a large frame and rough voice, laughed heartily, "True to your name as a little freak. Since that’s the case, let me have a go at you!"
As his words fell, the man jumped into the mud pit, his steady feet smashing down to create a deep vortex in the mud.
Gu Xiaoxi took a wary step back, eyeing the opponent’s bare arms and his muscular, intimidating strength. She could sense the fearsome power hidden beneath those fists, as solid as a mountain.
Several old soldiers watching around suddenly changed their expressions, their eyes lighting up with profound interest. Wu Gui was the runner-up in the World Combat Free League.
