Chapter 999: Chapter 999 Chang’an County Master Believes It’s Better to End the Pain Quickly (4)
"I don’t need your meddling!" Yan Junyu was frustrated, completely clueless about what was going on in the head of the girl who had haunted his dreams for days, "Lord warns you, don’t spout nonsense in front of that girl, or don’t blame me for laying a hand on you, a young lady."
"Do you think the Commandery Princess wants to meddle? Ha, how did I manage to set my sights on someone like you, who neither has the guts nor the audacity of a thief," Chang’an County Master’s eyes brimmed with mockery, but beneath the mockery was a thick layer of disappointment, invisible to all.
Yan Junyu was utterly defeated by the Commandery Princess and simply stopped engaging with her, peeling the orange in his hand so badly it looked as if he was dealing with an enemy.
The Commandery Princess teased for a while, but seeing that Yan Junyu continued to ignore her, she also lost interest. She had peeled a bunch of grapes for a long time and hadn’t eaten but a few, merely staring blankly at Mo Yan as she busied herself in the courtyard.
In front of the Mo Family’s house, Dani, in her new clothes and freshly combed hair, looked at the coachmen moving fruits in and out, a touch of joy blooming on her face. After straightening her clothing and making sure nothing was out of place, she stepped into the courtyard apprehensively and walked inside.
Dani didn’t know whether the man she was eager to see had come. She approached with anticipation, fantasizing about how to stand in front of him and talk confidently like Mo Yan!
She truly admired Mo Yan. No matter the situation, Mo Yan was never as timid and hesitant as her. Dani didn’t even want to observe her own cowardice, so how could she expect that man to notice her?
Ever since her mother learned whom she was fond of, although she ceased sending matchmakers, she often advised Dani not to get too attached, saying that their different social standings would lead to no good outcome.
She understood all of that, but she couldn’t help fantasizing. She hadn’t even confided her feelings to him, so how could she know it wouldn’t work? Even with a sliver of possibility, she wasn’t willing to give up.
Her mother called her foolish, and even she felt she was going crazy! She tried not to think about him, not to look, attempting to forget. But, she just couldn’t. Every night before she closed her eyes to sleep, her mind filled with his smile, his voice, even his silhouette; she couldn’t forget him, maybe she didn’t want to. Cherishing that glimmer of hope made even her dreams sweet.
All of Dani’s anticipation crumbled when she saw the man she liked sitting shoulder to shoulder with another unfamiliar girl, talking close and intimately. It felt as if her heart had been sliced with a sharp blade, painful and bleeding.
After Mo Yan finished her tasks, she was about to welcome Yan Junyu and the Commandery Princess when she turned and caught sight of Dani standing in a corner of the wall. With her keen eyesight, she immediately noticed Dani’s pallid face and saw her slender figure swaying in the gentle autumn breeze.
Observing the pair engaged in whispered conversation, Mo Yan quickly grasped why Dani looked so distraught. She felt pity and instinctively thought about going over to explain that there was nothing between her and Yan Junyu, but then she abruptly halted.
Even if she cleared up the misunderstanding, what would it change? Yan Junyu wasn’t going to marry Big Sister Dani, and Big Sister Dani’s deep affection was doomed to bear no fruit.
Better a short pain than a long one. Rather than letting Big Sister Dani struggle in vain hope through her explanation, it was better to use this opportunity to let her move on completely and find her own happiness.
Thinking this, Mo Yan steeled her heart and pretended not to see the heartbroken Dani, walking toward Yan Junyu and the Commandery Princess.
"Commandery Princess, Young Master Yan, I heard The Emperor intends to arrange a marriage between you two. I wonder if Hejia has the honor of attending your wedding feast?" Mo Yan asked.
Before Yan Junyu could explain, the Commandery Princess kicked him and spoke first, "Soon enough, soon enough. This guy won’t escape from my palm; just wait to celebrate our marriage!"
"Who would want to marry you, the Tiger Mother? Hmph, Lord wants to live a few more years!" Yan Junyu retorted with a cold face and without a hint of mercy.
He didn’t like the madcap girl who was always ready to lash him with a riding crop. Even if he must marry a girl he didn’t like in the future, he hoped his wife would be gentle and gracious, honestly filling the role of a Duchess who doesn’t cause trouble for no reason.
"Ha, The Imperial Uncle will sooner or later bestow a marriage on us. If you have the courage to reject it, the Commandery Princess will salute you as a real man!" The Commandery Princess fired back mercilessly, her demeanor betraying no sign of her affection for Yan Junyu.
Not to be outdone, Yan Junyu retaliated, "Whether or not I’m a man is none of your Tiger Mother business. If you’re truly worried about not being able to marry and clinging to me as a last resort, I might help you out, finding you a suitable husband."
"But I have my sights set on you. If you can find someone just like you, I will graciously let you be. Otherwise, don’t even think about marrying someone else," the Commandery Princess said haughtily, lifting her chin with an imposing aura that contradicted her appearance.
Mo Yan couldn’t help but want to bow down to this girl; her mere jest had resulted in her witnessing such a quarrel. The Commandery Princess’s every word and action were too impactful. Such a defiant woman didn’t fit the societal expectations of the time, but who could blame her for having the means to be so assertive?
In the modern world, she would be the ultimate femme fatale, likely attracting countless men and evoking the envy and jealousy of many women!
