Chapter 929: Chapter 929: Sinister Intentions, A Chance Encounter on the Street (2)

...

Upon learning that the bride she had chosen for her grandson was bestowed in marriage by the Emperor to Prince Weiyuan’s Heir, the mighty war hero, Old Lady Cui fell into a bout of deep dejection. After her dejection passed, she had no choice but to look for other maidens for her grandson.

Cui Pingan, however, was unwilling to follow Old Lady Cui’s arrangements, his heart belonged only to the girl from the South who had been by his side for over a decade. Even though her background was humble, he had set his heart on her. Having returned to life, he had no other wishes but to grow old with the one he loved.

That day, the diverging views between grandmother and grandson led to an unprecedented argument.

Looking at his grandmother gasping for breath in anger, Cui Pingan was torn between concern and his unwillingness to compromise. Unsure of what to do, he suddenly saw his aunt, who had always looked after him, coming in. He spoke hurriedly, seeing her as a lifesaver, "Auntie, please help Xiaoqi persuade grandmother not to let her hurt herself with anger."

Cui Qingrou had come upon hearing that her mother was arguing with her nephew. Seeing that her mother was indeed quite upset, she quickly went up and gently patted Old Lady Cui’s chest, "Mother, Xiaoqi doesn’t understand nor appreciates your kind intentions. When he’s older and thinks more clearly, it will be alright. You must take care of your health."

Cui Pingan wanted to step forward and comfort her, but he dared not, fearing his grandmother would become ill from anger upon seeing him.

With Cui Qingrou’s comforting, Old Lady Cui finally caught her breath. Her trembling forefinger pointed at Cui Pingan as she said, "You, you go out, I, I don’t want to see you now."

Watching his grandmother turn her head away, refusing to look at him again, the light in Cui Pingan’s eyes dimmed instantly. After silently bowing in respect, he dragged his heavy steps out of the room, under Cui Qingrou’s worried gaze.

Cui Qingrou knew her nephew’s temperament best, watching him grown yet not fully mature in heart, she was concerned he might become obstinate. She quickly said to the maid beside her, "Follow Seventh Master closely, don’t let him leave the mansion."

The maid gave a quick acknowledgement and hurried after him.

Just then, Old Lady Cui pushed her daughter away, speaking somewhat unsteadily, "Mother is fine, you go persuade Xiaoqi not to be stubborn. He must at least meet the granddaughter of his grand-uncle’s family first to know whether he likes her or not."

Cui Qingrou frowned slightly, really wanting to convince her mother to abandon this idea, knowing that Xiaoqi would not listen to her, but realizing her mother was not likely to agree and not wanting to upset her again, she soothed, "Mother, Xiaoqi isn’t feeling at peace right now, and probably won’t listen to any advice. After a few days when he’s calmed down, I’ll talk to him. Don’t overthink, it’s important to take care of your health."

Old Lady Cui thought it over and found her daughter’s words reasonable, so she didn’t insist, only managing a bitter smile, "This child, never properly taught by any elder since he was young, has developed such a stubborn nature. If this matter reaches your uncle’s ears today, how could your uncle ever agree to marry his most beloved granddaughter to him?"

Cui Qingrou, not confident she could persuade her nephew and not wishing for her mother to worry at her age about her grandson, thus advised, "Mother, when Xiaoqi was just born, even the Imperial Physician from the palace said he couldn’t be saved, but look at him now, aside from being a bit weaker, in what way does he fall short compared to others? This shows Xiaoqi is a fortunate child. Even if his future wife isn’t the granddaughter of my uncle, there will be another good girl to accompany him. As long as Xiaoqi is healthy and happy, does it matter who this person is?"

Old Lady Cui fell silent, seemingly understanding the other meaning in her daughter’s words, but still weighing the costs and benefits, she was unable to accept the fact that her grandson loved a tenant farmer girl of low status.

Cui Qingrou understood her mother’s thoughts and knew her grandmother needed time to think things through, so she didn’t try to persuade her any further. She sighed softly to herself, still worried her nephew might do something foolish and quietly left.
