Chapter 912: Chapter 912: Retaliation Against the Unknown Visitor (2)
Mo Yan and Xue tuanzi shared an understanding. Seeing that it was still thinking about flirting with girls, Mo Yan resolved to turn the rascal female; otherwise, there was no telling how many young women it might harm. This place was not as open as his previous life.
That very night, more than a dozen birds of varying sizes flew from the Mo Family toward Jing City, spying on the secret affairs within the deep courtyards of powerful families, becoming an invisible airborne intelligence network.
Gathering information from the various mansions would take some time, so Mo Yan calmly waited at home. Aside from visiting the orchard and herb field in the mornings or evenings, he spent the rest of his time at home, either reading or working. It was simply too hot outside, with no air conditioning or electric fans; just sitting would make one sweat profusely.
On the third day after the birds had flown away, Old man Ding led a group of villagers to the Mo Family to get fishing nets.
The truth was that the hot summer weather was unsuitable for fishing. For one, fish prices were not as high as in winter, and two, they were prone to dying and spoiling. But winter was far too cold, making fishing even more challenging.
With the recent lack of rain and shallow water in the ponds, it was easy to catch fish. They planned to corral the fish in Xiaoqing River with nets and raise them there, catching fresh fish in the morning to sell at the market without worrying about spoilage.
Furthermore, the Mo Family didn’t lack for money from selling fish; even if the price was lower, it didn’t matter much. If they fished in winter and the fishermen got too cold, the medicine alone could cost a fair bit.
Mo Yan had never seen fish harvesting in his previous life and thus was quite intrigued, planning to go and take a look.
Not only Tang Xin, but Xin Er and the others hadn’t seen it either. Learning that Mo Yan was going, they too put on their veiled hats and followed along.
Arriving at the pond, Mo Yan and the group stood under a small peach tree, watching Old man Ding direct the villagers in netting the fish.
The pond was an acre large, and using just one fishing net would be too inefficient. Mo Yan had purchased a total of six nets; each net was six feet wide, so the six nets spanned a total of thirty-six feet. Laid out in a single line, the nets went in on one side while the people stood on the opposite side pulling the ropes.
Fishing like this seemed simple but required precise net spacing and speed. If the six nets were cast at once and mishandled, they could easily become entangled, necessitating someone to enter the water and separate them.
Another kind of net was simpler. It entailed lowering a large woven net into the middle of the pond and sitting in a boat to herd the fish towards the center with bamboo poles. This way, the fish would become trapped in the net, which could then be hauled in.
This method didn’t require much strength, but it couldn’t catch fish larger than the size of the mesh, nor those smaller; it was hard to clean out all the fish in one go, and the fish were more likely to die, affecting their appearance at market.
Soon enough, the six nets were in position, each net attached to long ropes. Twelve villagers took the net ropes and walked to the opposite bank in sequence. At Old man Ding’s command, they started to draw in the nets steadily and unhurriedly.
"Sis, it looks rather fun. I want to try pulling it too," Xin Er said, watching the water bubbling up in the middle of the pond as the nets were drawn, eager to participate.
"Don’t even think about it. Those nets are heavy in the water; with your slight frame, you’d pull yourself in before you even exert any strength," Mo Yan countered without mercy.
Upon hearing that, Xin Er retorted discontentedly, "Sis, don’t underestimate me. I’m going to help now; just wait and see!" With that, she took off her veiled hat, rolled up her sleeves, and ran over.
Mo Yan didn’t stop her, her mind contemplating which ointment was effective for strains.
Before long, the six nets were nearly simultaneously pulled to the shore. While the nets were still submerged, several large fish began to thrash about within them, splashing water everywhere and soaking the villagers’ clothes.
"Ouch, these fish are indeed big. All of these added up must be around a hundred or two hundred pounds, right?"
