Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Made a Pile of Money_1
The sun had just risen and the vegetable market in the Eastern Market was gradually filling with shoppers. The vendors were energetically calling out, their faces beaming as they solicited business.
In the dead of winter, there weren’t many types of produce to sell. Other than radishes and Chinese cabbage, there were tofu and pickled vegetables, but there were plenty of vendors selling chicken, duck, and pork, as well as some selling dried mushrooms and other fungi.
Residents of the Eastern Market generally had good living conditions. On regular days, they couldn’t buy fresh vegetables and many were somewhat reluctant, yet they had to come and make purchases.
But today was different. Many people came to buy vegetables and rushed toward the end of the street as if by prior agreement. Some hurried over only to find that they were a second too late. The small stall was already surrounded by layers of people inside and out, and it was impossible to see what was happening inside.
"Miss, give me thirty pounds of spinach, thirty pounds of bok choy, we’re having a celebration at home and need a lot!"
"Boss, I was here first, weigh mine first!"
"Hey, hey, don’t push from behind, you’re crushing my basket!"
"..."
"Everyone, one at a time, don’t crowd, there’s still a lot of produce available, plenty for everybody!"
Mo Yan, sweating profusely, packed and weighed cabbage for customers and, seeing that the stall was about to be knocked over, quickly shouted for them to step back a bit.
Beside her, Mo Qingze was also busy weighing produce for customers. He had never done this before and, with the crowd, it was inevitably chaotic.
"Goodness, you are too slow. With business this good, why didn’t you call a few more people to help? There are so many people, and I still have to wait a long time!"
"Exactly, I’ve been waiting for a quarter of an hour and it’s still not my turn, and people behind are starting to push."
"..."
Hearing the customers’ complaints, Mo Yan and her father could only offer dry smiles in apology.
They had thought that the prices of the vegetables were almost catching up to pork and that not many people would come to buy on the first day. Little did they anticipate that once these green vegetables and spinach were displayed, people would swarm to them like bees. Had they known it would be this successful, they definitely would have hired more help.
It wasn’t the fault of the father and daughter for miscalculating; after all, ordinary greens cost fifteen copper coins per pound, while spinach and celery were even more expensive at eighteen copper coins per pound—prices not many ordinary families could afford.
But what they didn’t realize was that since winter had set in, residents in the town had scarcely eaten fresh vegetables. Every day it was either radishes and Chinese cabbage or meat and pickled vegetables—who wouldn’t get tired of that?
No wonder then, after enduring for a month or two, upon seeing these lush, tender green leaves, who could resist them? No matter the cost, they had to buy a few pounds to taste something fresh!
Continuously taking money and making change, the money pouch tied around her waist became heavier and heavier, jingling with every move. Mo Yan didn’t know exactly how much money she had collected that morning, but seeing that three carts of vegetables on the stall had dwindled to just a little left, she knew it was quite a sum.
In less than two hours, all the vegetables were sold out. Several women who came upon hearing the news could only see some scattered green vegetable leaves left on the stall.
Ah, these green leaves are very green and tender too!
At last, their stall was so cleared out that not even a single leaf of vegetable was left; those who hadn’t bought any were simply resentful of the woman’s quick moves, and they hadn’t managed to grab even a leaf!
Facing several resentful gazes, father and daughter could only promise to come again tomorrow and set up their stall here again, so they could come earlier.
Only then did the faces of several women brighten up a bit. Worried that something might delay them tomorrow, they repeatedly requested the father and daughter to reserve some vegetables for them to pick up directly when they came. Once the father and daughter had agreed, they left contently with their empty baskets.
After tidying up the vegetable stall and boarding the ox cart they had called for, father and daughter were too tire to move.
Leaving the Eastern Market, Mo Yan finally recovered a bit. She specifically asked the coachman to detour to West Market’s vegetable street. Seeing the bustling crowd and the similar merchandise sold there, she couldn’t help but plan to set up another stall in West Market tomorrow. Southern Market, where wealthy and wealthy people gathered, could be another good spot.
After paying the coach fare and returning home, Mo Yan couldn’t wait to dump the two money bags onto the table. With a clang, copper coins and silver corner pieces instantly spread across the entire table, some even rolling onto the floor.
Xin Er pounced on the table in an instant, their eyes wide open and mouths agape big enough to fit an egg—they had never seen such a big pile of money before!
Mo Qingze was also greatly surprised. He knew they had sold a lot of silver coins from the three cartloads of vegetables today, but now seeing it all piled together, he realized it was indeed a lot!
"Don’t just stand there stupidly, hurry up and count the money," Mo Yan said, chuckling as she took out some cotton thread and scissors, amused by their expressions.
Counting money? That truly was a joyful task!
The five of them sat down around the table together, each with a strand of cotton thread, and began counting and stringing the money. It took half an hour before all the copper coins were counted and strung. Finally, they counted a total of eighty-nine seventy strings of copper coins, plus over twenty silver corner pieces of varying amounts.
"A string has a hundred copper coins, ten strings are one or two pieces of silver, and eighty strings are eight tael silver," Xin Er carefully calculated with the fingers, suddenly widening their eyes, and swiftly looking towards Mo Yan, "Sis, pinch me quickly, see if I’m dreaming!"
"Pfft! Haha..." Zhenzhen was the first to burst out laughing ungraciously, pointing at the second sister teasingly, "Second sister really has no sophistication, getting scared by just over ten taels of silver, haha, that’s so funny!"
Everyone else laughed along, not out of mockery towards Xin Er, but from genuine happiness. No one had imagined that in just a couple of hours, they would have earned nearly ten and one tael of silver.
Seeing Xin Er snap back to reality, glaring fiercely at Zhenzhen about to pounce to hit her, Mo Yan gently slapped Zhenzhen on the back of the head, "How do you speak to your sister? Apologize right now!"
Zhenzhen, seeing her second sister looking fierce and also fearing a beating, slowly dragged herself over and hugged Xin Er’s neck, coquettishly begging for forgiveness.
Xin Er, not politely at all, twisted her ear before finally accepting her apology with a scolding.
After the laughter and teasing, Mo Yan carefully placed all the silver coins into a wooden box. Although it wasn’t a lot of silver, it brought confidence to the family; she believed that this box of copper coins would eventually turn into a box of real gold and silver!
Approaching noon, Mo Yan initially wanted to prepare a feast to celebrate, but Lizhong had been busy searching for his daughter and hadn’t come back for lunch recently, so she decided to cook in the evening instead. Given the busy morning and the afternoon trip to Liu Yang Village planned, she simply made three dishes and a soup.
The family, in a good mood, found even the simple home-cooked meals delicious.
After putting down their bowls and chopsticks, Mo Yan and Mo Qingze, without stopping for a break, hired a cart and went to Liu Yang Village. This time, they needed not only to get the villagers to prepare more vegetables but also to find additional help to sell them.
