Chapter 58 The Ruthless Mo Hong’s Family_1

Chapter 58: Chapter 58 The Ruthless Mo Hong’s Family_1

"How could that old devout lady... How could Second Grandma do this?"

After listening to Mo Wu’s tearful complaints, Mo Yan snapped a twig in her hand, indignant, "Si Nier is so well-behaved, how could she have the heart to sell her? That’s her own granddaughter!"

She never imagined that Mrs. Hong could be so cruel. Just for a few pancakes, she sold her six-year-old granddaughter from Uncle Tang’s House and then lied to others, saying she had died of an illness—it was simply monstrous!

Thinking of her obedient and sensible little daughter, waves of pain clutched at Mo Wu’s heart, and despite her efforts to hold back, tears spilled from her eyes once more: "The food we brought on the road was stolen by other disaster victims, my third uncle caused a disaster, losing our house and all our silver to Landlord Chen as compensation. Landlord Chen only let him off because of that. Poor Si Nier was sold by her own grandmother for just a few pancakes, sob sob!"

By the end, she was almost gritting her teeth. Fifteen years spent married into the Mo Family, taking care of everything inside and outside the home, never daring to be the slightest disrespectful to her in-laws, yet in the end, she couldn’t even protect her own flesh and blood. How could she not feel hatred?

Mo Yan was stunned—there was even such a thing?

She knew Old Man Mo and Mrs. Hong would go to great lengths to plot against their family, gripping their property tightly in their hands. How could they willingly give up a juicy morsel and move to Liu Yang Village? So it turned out to be that troublemaker Mo Yongshou who had offended the wealthy and influential Landlord Chen.

She didn’t know whether to feel schadenfreude or to say it was karma, but the retribution should have fallen on the chief culprit alone. Instead, it unfairly affected innocent children.

Seeing how upset Mo Wu was, Mo Yan didn’t dare to bring up Si Nier anymore and promptly changed the subject, "Aunt from Uncle Tang’s House, your niece always remembers your kindness. If you encounter any difficulties, I will help in any way I can."

Mo Wu quickly wiped away her tears and looked at her niece, whose appearance and complexion had changed drastically in just a few months, feeling both guilty and grateful. Back in Mo Family Village, as the lady of the house, even though she felt pity for her three nephews and nieces, she didn’t dare cross her mother-in-law. In reality, she hadn’t helped them much. Yet her eldest niece still remembered that.

"Aunt knows you are good-hearted. If I really had any other option, I would be too ashamed to see you."

Mo Yan shook her head, "If it weren’t for Aunt looking out for us from time to time in the past, my siblings and I probably would have starved to death long ago. Please speak frankly if you are facing difficulties; don’t be shy with your niece."

Mo Wu’s eyes reddened again, and she nodded, her voice choked with emotion, "Then I won’t be polite with you! Little Stone fell ill the day before yesterday, and the little silver we have at home is clutched in his grandma’s hands. She refuses to give the money to call a doctor. Now the child’s sickness has worsened; he can’t even drink rice soup. I had no choice but to think of asking you to lend me some silver to have a doctor take a look at the child."

Upon hearing this, Mo Yan inwardly cursed Mrs. Hong for her heartlessness. Even if she didn’t care much for one of her grandsons, she couldn’t just watch her own grandchild die! Suddenly, Mo Yan felt fortunate she had not been reborn as one of Mrs. Hong’s granddaughters; otherwise, she would either die once more or have to take that cold-hearted woman down!

Seeing Mo Wu’s anxious face, Mo Yan took a deep breath to calm her rising anger and promptly agreed without a second word, "Aunt from Uncle Tang’s House, we can’t delay with Stone’s illness. Hurry home and bring him here; we’ll go see a doctor in the city right now!"

"Yes, yes, Aunt is on her way!"

Mo Wu, seeing Mo Yan’s decisive response, lost her last bit of worry, quickly wiped her face, and ran back to her house.

When Mo Wu came carrying the child, Mo Yan saw him with his eyes tightly shut, his face a purplish-red, and his lips cracked with dead skin. She dared not delay any further and, after quickly speaking with Mo Qingze, took mother and child onto the donkey cart and hurried towards the city.

A forty-mile journey, rushed or not, still took nearly two hours. Once at the clinic, the doctor, after seeing the child’s condition, sternly reprimanded Mo Wu. If they had delayed another night, the child could have died or been left brain-damaged from the fever, frightening Mo Wu into an unstoppable flood of tears!

Mo Yan also felt an immense sense of fear after the fact. Little Stone was only three years old and extremely vulnerable; in the medically underdeveloped ancient times, the likelihood of an early death was too great. With this in mind, her heart grew even more resentful towards the heartless Mo Hong’s family.

Upon leaving the medical hall, Mo Yan took Mo Wu and her son directly to her home, letting Little Stone sleep in her own bed.

Little Stone had woken up for a short while after taking his medicine at the medical hall, but now he was asleep again, deep in slumber. Thankfully, the medicine seemed to be working, as the purple-red color on his face had faded somewhat, and his body was not as hot as before, which reassured everyone a bit.

Xin’er Zhen’er both remembered Mo Wu, this aunt by marriage, and knew of the kindness she had shown to them and their two brothers. They were also quite happy to know that their little cousin was sick, though the thought had brought them to tears.

"Aunt, please take care of Little Stone in the room. If you’re tired, you can lie down and rest," Xin’er Zhen’er offered.

After sending the two children away, Mo Yan took a thinner cotton blanket out of the cabinet and covered Little Stone with it.

Touching the soft and warm blanket, Mo Wu’s eyes reddened as she nodded with gratitude, not knowing quite what to say.

Mo Yan smiled, left the room, gently closed the door behind her, and instructed the children to speak softly before she carried a few packets of medicine into the kitchen.

In the room, it was so quiet that one could hear the sound of the cold wind whistling around the corner of the wall outside.

Mo Wu touched her little son’s face and stared blankly, lost in thought. Remembering the helplessness and despair she felt while tending to her child over the past few days, a look of hatred filled her eyes. She despised the heartless cruelty of her husband’s mother and her husband’s cowardly, foolish filial piety. Yet, she loathed her own powerlessness even more. Had she dared to stand firm against her mother-in-law’s decision to sell her daughter back then, perhaps they would not have ended up in this situation!

She was very grateful to have encountered Uncle Tang’s family; otherwise, she feared she might not have been able to protect her youngest son. By comparison, her dissatisfaction with her husband’s family and her husband grew deeper. If it were not for her children, she had no desire to remain in such an in-law’s family.

The thick cotton blanket was warm and clearly brand new. Thinking of various aspects of life back in Liu Yang Village, Mo Wu realized that Uncle Tang’s house was now having a much better time than they had in Mo Family Village, and while she was happy for them, she also felt a boundless worry about her future days in her in-law’s family.

Having not slept well for several days, it didn’t take long before Mo Wu’s eyelids became heavy, and she unconsciously lay down and, holding her child, fell into a deep sleep.

Mother and son both slept very soundly. Two hours later, Mo Yan came with the medicine and, upon knocking on the door and hearing no response from inside, quietly entered and saw they were sleeping soundly. She had no choice but to wake them up.

Mo Wu felt embarrassed for Mo Yan to prepare the medicine. She quickly woke her son and held him in her arms to feed him the medicine.

Little Stone was quite well-behaved; he did not cry or fuss upon waking, and he quickly finished his bowl of medicine.

Seeing that it was getting late, Mo Wu felt it would be improper to stay at the Mo Family anymore and expressed her desire to leave.

Mo Yan quickly insisted, "Aunt, Little Stone has only just begun to recover, and he certainly cannot be exposed to the wind now. You both should stay here for the next couple of days, and once Little Stone has fully recovered, then you can go back."
